I have a Western Digital Passport 320GB External Harddrive that is no longer recognized by the computer. It worked two days ago... now nothing. I get a pop up when I plug it in that states: USB Device Not Recognized.I checked Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus Controllers-Unknown Device.It's not a drive letter issue. Windows XP SP3 does not recognize it all.

It still says that there are things stored on the external drive, but when I click on the icon, nothing shows up.I have another WD that is working just fine.Also, the icon for the drive changed from the blue "WD" back to the default.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter backing up on this drive for nine months (and with a reformating three months ago), now the backup will not recognize the E: drive. No error message is given. MY Computer shows that it is now 3/4 full with plenty of space (46 gig) on the Acomodate 160 gig drive under NTSF format. I am thinking of changing to a fire wire from the USB.I have been doing a complete system backup and maybe I'll change to just backing up my documents after we get it working.
View 10 Replies View RelatedGot a Western Digital My Book essential edition USB 160GB, reformatted it from FAT32 to NTFS, backed up everything I wanted and did the clean install. It worked. I had a few problems getting the OS to recognize my USB Canoscan, but worked that out. My problem now is that the OS won't see the external hard drive unless I'm in safe mode. In safe mode it is assigned drive letter J, which was the same drive letter it was before the OS reinstall. It does not show up in drive manager. Nothing changes in device manager when I unplug/replug it and no new hardware is found. Device manager does show an unknown device, but that was there before anything was plugged in (which is distressing in itself!)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Sabrent SBT-EKU25 external enclosure with a 2.5 inch hard disk in it. This is a USB 2.0 drive and whenever I connect it to USB 2.0 port, it is not recognized (or "recognized" as an unknown device" ) on all my machines. It however is recognized as a drive and works fine on one laptop which has only USB 1.1 ports.I have tried separately powered USB hubs as well without success. So I don't think it's a power issue.I have even tried deleting all USB devices in Device Manager and let the machine rediscover them.

View 14 Replies View RelatedMy USB External Hard Drive suddenly decided to stop working monday before last, it is weird, like it will turn on and all, but it doesnt get recognized and while its on none of my programs will load like Ventrilo and games(ventrillo will half load but not all the way) and the computer wont shutdown while its on. but the moment i turn it off they all start running smoothly agian and the computer will shutdown immediatly (if i am at the shutdown screen). Under hardware manager it shows up and says this device working properly. XP does not assign a drive letter. Disk management shows device but reports it as 128 Gb capacity. Then I had a system crash and had to re-install WindowsXP Pro. Now this external drive is not recognized. A drive icon is also not displayed in My Computer. In System Hwde Devices, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the (Maxtor 500-Gig) USB Mas Storage Device. I have made several attempts to uninstall this drive and re-install it but the same identical message appears each time: Mass Storage Device Not Recognized. I'm also getting a Code 39 error code informing me that the drivers for this device are either missing or corrupted. The drive spins up and the light comes on to indicate it is running but nothing is shown in device manager or My computer. It also is not shown in disk management.I have uninstalled the the USB drivers through the device manager with no change after rebooting. I know what to do but i am bit curious on the formatting bit. I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I got a trojan that attached to my browser. I managed to get rid of it by system restore.A few days later I noticed I only had 127 GB of my 300GB harddrive showing.I did manage to find the missing space though Disk Management. It was showing 170GB as unallocated space. I named it E: and formatted it.It now shows in My Computer as New Volume E: When I open E:I get 2 folders, Recycler and System volume Information. SVI will not open. It gives me an error, ESystem Volume Information is not accessable, access is denied.I am trying to find a way to either resize E: to 1GB or smaller and move that 169 GB back to C: or get rid of E: altogether and put all the missing space back on C:

I wanted to format my computer completely anyways, and would like to know how i can format my computer and merge these two partitions. I have the formatting disks, but it never goes to a screen asking me about my partitions, it just formats everything on my C: (my default drive), but keeps everything on my D: intact (games, files, etc.).
View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently upgraded my laptop to windows XP from ME. I first replaced my 5 gig hard drive with a 20 gig hard drive. I added another 128 memory module for a total of 256. For an old machine it really hums now. Three minor problems are bugging me though. 1. I lost the sounds from my modem. The modem works fine except for no sound. I assume that the sound is from the unimodem half-duplex audio device that is located on the Lucent winmodem. I have checked everything. The system says that it is working correctly. I cannot even find the driver for this on microsoft . I thought if I could load a new driver it might work. No such thing. 2. System restore didn't work until I erased all the memory points and reloaded the program. Now if I open siystem restore and click on "settings" or "help" System restore shuts down. I assume it is corrupted and would like to reload it.

Is there a way to login to a MS Passport site without having to reenter your password every time? Whenever I click 'sign in' I click the option to remember my name and password, but to no avail. The next time I go to sign in it once again it asks for my password. I thought you should just be able to click 'sign in' and you would sign in without have to type a thing.
