I have bought an external hard drive and I would like my various programs to automatically save data to the external hard drive Would I need to install the programs onto that hard drive?

I get a pop up when I plug it in that states: USB Device Not Recognized.I checked Device Manager: Universal Serial Bus Controllers-Unknown Device.It's not a drive letter issue. View 3 Replies View RelatedAbout 6 months ago I installed a 500-Gig Maxtor External HD I use as a "back-up" source.When I first installed it, it worked fine. Then I had a system crash and had to re-install WindowsXP Pro. Now this external drive is not recognized. A drive icon is also not displayed in My Computer. In System Hwde Devices, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the (Maxtor 500-Gig) USB Mas Storage Device. I have made several attempts to uninstall this drive and re-install it but the same identical message appears each time: Mass Storage Device Not Recognized. I'm also getting a Code 39 error code informing me that the drivers for this device are either missing or corrupted. Some time ago I was told that I would have to uninstall and re-install Windows XP Pro if I wanted to correct this issue. Is this true?

some details:the old version that was installed on the HD was XP Pro and the current is XP Home editon. the HD has two partitions C and D, now there is only C.
i chose the Quick NTFS formmating option.
i just built myself another new computer and i had one of my other hard drives hooked up as slave so i could retain all the data on it, while making a fresh install of Windows on a different hard drive... so here's the question, i went to get files off my user account "Kevin" from my old hard drive, and it says i do not have access. i know the password for the account but it doesn't ask me for a password.. and i can't put it in anywhere, and then i went to sharing and security and it says to drag it to shared folder but when i try and do that it says i don't have permission..

PC runs on Windows Xp SP2. It has 2 hard drives where the biggest one is paritioned into three drives: one for Windows installation, second was used for installation files of other programs (I kept Program Files folder there) and the alst one was dedicated for data storage. So the problem occured with the second drive. and as a result i do not have most of my programs running.
I am backing up data to an external USB hard drive. What should I backup? I don't have enough room to backup my whole hard drive onto the external. I'm looking for suggestions of specific folders ie. Documents and Settings, etc. as opposed to advice like "whatever can't be downloaded or replaced easily".

I have an EXTERNAL HD. I formatted it in FAT a few months ago. Ever since then, my laptop PC was unable to recognize the unit, but the Mac (which is not working right now, unfortunately) never had a problem with it. When I connect it to my laptop PC via USB, the USB icon shows up and the "USB Mass Storage Device Properties" says the "device is working properly." But the folder doesn't show up in My Computer, and diskmgmt.msc says the device is "Unallocated." Hopefully that doesn't mean the unit crashed because I have some stuff on there.Without losing the data (that should be on it, unless it crashed), I want to convert this thing to NTFS. I did some Google searching, but the instructions on how to do this (they say use convert.exe) aren't working. Moreover, no one mentioned how to convert an External, secondary HD.
View 11 Replies View RelatedWell like alot of people I made the mistake of selecting safeboot in the boot.ini file in the msconfig file after my comp got a virus and would not boot into safemode. The hard drive is in two partitions: the C drive used to contain windows, and the D drive which has the data i am trying to save. I don't have a Windows XP disc because it was already on the comp when i bought it. I have attempted to restore the windows files with Bart PE bootup image disc but it wiped out Windows XP completely from the C drive in the process, but the Data drive is still showing up with all its files intact.
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy problem is a result of a long series of attempts to fix a corrupt Windows registry file. A few days ago I booted my laptop and received a blue screen error: c0000218, relating to a corrupt Windows registry file. Windows could not load. After a lot of searching online I found a way to manually replace this and four other related files from the c:WindowsRepair folder using the command prompt.
This process seemed to work and Windows began to load. I then received a lsass.exe error saying something about invalid passwords. My laptop began an infinite cycle of restarting itself. I looked up the lsass.exe error and people seemed to think it was unrecoverable. As my hard drive was reasonably small (100g) and had been showing some signs of problems I decided to just buy a new one. I went out and purchased a new 320g 2.5" hard drive along with a 2.5" USB drive enclosure and another 1g stick of RAM......

Small master harddrive was full installed an old harddrive from another computer an 80gig axs a slave. it shows it is drive letter F and can open it I deleted all the files that were on it so it is empty. Itshows in computer managment but how do I get it so I can put folders, files and like put the antivirus on that drive, I think I did something wrong but don't no what it is. It shows in computer management as Drive F and I put it as NTSF like the master drive
I'm getting extremely frustrated with a problem I keep encountering trying to install a new SATA Hard Drive. I connect the SATA HD power & data cable I prepare a FDD with the necessary HD Cotroller Drivers from the motherboard utilities CD I boot the PC I insert my XP Pro (SP2) CD The PC boots from the CD I press F6 when prompted for 3rd party drivers When prompted, I install the necessary drivers from the FDD I then get to the bit where I chose to install Windows rather than do a Repair - when I select install, I'm told that no HD is present & that I need to exit by pressing F3 I've tried removing RAM to see if any is dodgy but still encounter the same problem.
I've attached the new SATA HD to a different PC & everything moves on perfectly but I quit before formatting the drive as I want to do a clean install on the other PC. I'm beginning to think that there might be a problem with the Motherboard but am open to suggestions (the old HD is stuck in an infitinte boot loop & am unable to slave it to another HD as it wont respond - maybe caused by a Motherboard problem?).
After my last hard drive took a nosedive, I went out and bought a Western Digital Serial ATA 500 gb harddrive. I've physically put it in my Sony Vaio Desktop. I am trying to install Windows XP Professional now. When I get to the Setup screen is says Unknown Disk. I've already seemed to install the drivers for the new harddisk (they provided me a CD to install the drivers, it came with a program called "Lifeguard Tool" or something like that.
I have tried pressing F6 to install a RAID driver using the Windows setup... I pressed S... but then I find out I need a floppy disk drive... even if I had one, the box only came with a CD and not any floppy disks. I've tried slipstreaming Windows xp cd, service pack 2, and the drivers onto one bootable cd, it did not work... i'm too tired to go in there and find out why. *sigh*
Reformated and reinstalled windows xp. after instalation finished.i noticed i actually have 2 versions of xp home on my harddrive, how do i remove one without it effecting the other? i did this once before thur the reg ( i think) but i cant remember how.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a WD 74GB Raptor harddrive to install XP on, but I'm having problems. Every time I load up XP setup from the setup CD, when it gets to the part where the installation options menu is about to appear, as it tries to boot windows from the CD, I get a BSOD and have to restart. I've tried running the CD with my other 80GB WD IDE hard drive inside and it doesn't cause this stop error. I've been screwing with this for 2 weeks now trying everything I can find on google and forums to fix this problem. I have the correct SATA drivers for my board as well for the drive of which I hit F6 for at the beginning of setup.

I have 2 hard drives, Harddrive "A" has all the window/program files as well as other programs like games and documents. Harddrive B is where i keep all my big files like videos and movies of course i want to format harddrive A but the thing is that harddrive is split in to 3 drives (C:, G:, F. I dont mind formating the c drive since it is all windows/program files but i dont really want to get rid of the G/F drive. I kno you can format the harddrive through the installation process of windows but i was wondering if it is possilbe to just to format the C: during that process or does it only format the whole harddrive
View 2 Replies View RelatedI reformatted my hard drive due to OS issues, I was running a trial version of Server 2003 along with XP Pro, and I had to get rid of Server 2003 because it was conflicting with XP Pro, and so the only way to do that was by reformatting both hard drives including XP Pro because Server 2003 was acting as the dominant OS, so I backed up all my ****, and reinstalled XP Pro, but now I get this hard drive problem that it says only 51 Gigs are remaining on a 250GB Hard drive, when the only thing installed on that hard drive is XP pro and maybe 15 applications, I tried using every program I can think of to find hidden files that equal a huge size but nothing shows up
