Which NTFS Format To Chosse During Reinstallation Of Windows
Jun 28, 2006
my hardrive failed and i was forced to format and reinstall windows xp sp2, during the installion i noticed something very intresting.
in the DOS menu of the windows xp installation, a user is usually given an option to delete and created a new partition, upon doing so, the user will be given two choices:
I am in need of some serious assistance with my home laptop. I had made the mistake of letting my friend use my laptop while I was asleep and awoke to find him restarting my machine because of a virus. Well needless to say from that point on it's been hell. I have never seen an infestation of viruses and spyware like this in my life and I cannot remove them all, I acknowledge that I need to format and start fresh.
I recently upgraded the hard drive on a pc that I had built and I am sure when I installed windows it was formatted with ntfs, when I installed and cloned to the new drive I noticed it was fat 32, is it possible for windows to change its format?
I already converted my HD from FAT32 to NFTS. I ran the "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c:" and it shows my cluster size of 4096 KB. BootIT NG also confirms the 4KB cluster size.So..Is that all I needed to do? Is there an advantage of formatting a HD directly as NTFS? Is the convert command (with the 4KB cluster size) enough or will a re-format give better security, performance etc.
How do you format a new, fresh, hard drive to NTFS? Without using an XP system or installation disk? I know for old stuff you can use fdisk and format in DOS.
Been trying to reformat my harddrive, format goes well but it will only format it to the fat32 and i want it in the ntfs. now i have tried to convert using the cmd command butit tell me it will convert then restart and for a few seconds it will tell me that it is going to convert may take a few minutes then a few seconds later windows will start and its not converted over. i have the windows xp service pk 2 upgrade cd i tried using that but it never gives me a choice on wwhich file system to use. i know the option is there thou because i installed xp on my mother's as an upgrade from win me and it ask me if i wanted to convert.
Ive recently purchased a used 80gb external portable HD for use with my new USB car stereo head unit. The manufacturers state that the H/U will only recognize the FAT32 file system. Hence I went about formatting (it came formatted) the drive as it came with the NTFS system. When I prepare to format the drive via disk management, it only gives me the option of an NTFS format and no FAT32.
I have a GM SATA 160GB External Hard Drive that is USB compatible.During a recent file transfer, a suspected Virus infection caused all folders to executable files which even could not be viewed. Failing in several attempts to recover any of the affected files, I resorted to various formatting procedures including Low-level formatting. RAW file format resulted and now I need an NTFS file format to be able to use the drive!
Can anyone advise me on formating or reformating my hard drive. I am running windows xp pro and have a 20 gb maxtor hard drive. This is formatted as NTFS as one partition. I tried from windows explore and from my computer. I also tried to change to 32 bit partition. Can I do this with fdisk, if so how?
I am trying to format my hard drive, it is already converted to NTFS but I cam getting the error message cannot format drive e (my drive letter)I have ran CHKDSK and it is saying unable to perform scan on RAW drives
This problem only occurs with any version of windows XP, Pro/Home/Media, at first, i could never install ie8 through windows update. It wouldnt install properly and sometimes i would have to start the installation over and not do it through windows update and do it manually with the downloadable file. So we learned our way around that no problem and its not a hassle to install it seperatly, but the BIGGEST PAIN IN THE A** we are having now is, when we reinstall widows, either on a new HD, Old, or even on a brand new custom built computer
my system is really slow.I ran many virus scanners, spy/adware destroyers, and programs to clean and fix your registry but they didnt do anything. so i finally just reinstalled XP, i got all the suggested drivers and updated to service pack 2 and got all the windows updates, but its still just as slow.when i run it in safe mode, it works like a charm, just like it used to.
my dell dimension 2400 got so much spyware on it i could scan for it, but not remove it. i reinstalled xp and i the computer basically operates the same way. i am lucky to get anything to work with the keys but especially no function with the mouse. windows xp appears to be installed fine. i cannot get to system restore either. i have my dell laptop hooked to it with but cannot navigate at all in trying to link the two puters together. i wanted to completely format and reinstall xp but it appears it just copied over and still left me with the problems.
Someone gave me a laptop that didn't work. It's a HP Pavillion ze 4900.It originally had xp home on it, so I ordered a new disk to install on it. It was saying that some files were not found. It would do nothing. It also has a password on it. I did find out the password from them. I tried doing the repair installation and it didn't work, so I formatted the partition and tried to re-install to it. The problem is that when it finished formatting and then loading the windows files, when it restarts from there I have to put in the password again and it starts all over. I have done this 2x now and still it keeps doing the same thing. I just turned it off and thought
I have recently reinstalled windows XP after some speed problems and my PC is running really well now. I've also been carrying out a lot of registry clean-up (CC Cleaner), maintenance etc.
When carrying out a disc defragmentation, I noticed that there was reference to a lot of mainly old downloaded files which were saved on the hard-disk before I reinstalled windows.
I recently tried reinstalling windows 2000 thinking it would maybe help my computer. I ran the windows 2000 disk and chose the first option(the one where it doesnt clean out all my files). Now during "registering components" in the installation the loading bar seems to make no progress. I've left it on for a couple days now and it has shown no progress. I've tried restarting my comp but then it restarts the windows 2000 installation again and then the same problem
Ive been trying to reformat my computer but everytime i try i get this message: The type of the file system is NTFS.Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first.ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N)
I just formatted my laptop, and for some reason when it boots it makes me choose which windows media center to use, there's 2 options both say windows media center... i formatted it i dont understand how thats still there..?
I'm trying to format my hard drive to install windows XP pro,I currently am running windows XP pro.The problem is I can't format, when I try to format with a fdisk I get an error saying:"Your program caused a divide overflow error. If the problem persists, contact your program vendor."I also use windows XP CD and the problem with that is when it gets to the blue screen of windows setup it freezes.Anyone have any idea how to solve it and get my hard drive formatted.
computer started to run very poorly: lagging, freezing up, windows end task etc finnaly one day it would not go into desktop. would only give option to start in normal mode or safe mode. so i tried starting in both but would only restart into the same option screen.I decided it was best to format harddrive and reload windows. insert windows disk and proceeded to format partition and reinstall windows. it formats all that way to 90 % and then states cannot format partition further, harddrive problems and to trouble shoot manual. tried quick format and repair but still nothing.tried restarting without reinstall disk. says cant access OS of course!
ok i am trying to format my hard drive and reintaling my windows XP b/c right now im running windows xp spanish and i want english.. so when i try to boot in the CD. i go into the windows setup blue screen. but from there it doesnt advance. what can i do?
I have 2 internal HDDs, and 3 external HDDs. However, the recent addition of a Mac by my sister has forced me to be able to share the external HDDs between computers. I understand that the Mac OSX reads/not writes NTFS but will read/write FAT32. Having been advised by other senior Windows users many years back, all my HDDs are in NTFS. I have found no solution to convert NTFS back to FAT32. Does anyone know if you can do so; without damage/corruption? There is much family pictures, common music in these external HDDs; so needless to say, they are precious
I need to get my HDD reformatted with the help of a paid technician.Couple of weeks ago he used the quick format method & asked him if that would make any difference & he said really not.I have the doubts though. I kind of wonder why would Windows then give a choice if there really wasn’t any difference?
It's got to the time where I need to do this and I have done it numerous times in the past but this time I am having problems.
Last week bought two new 500gb harddrives and replaced my existing 300gb slave. Formatted and partitioned this and all was okay.
Today I have removed the 300gb master and installed, formatted and partitioned the new 500gb hd with PM8.
I have set the primary partition as active and all the others are logical which is asthe old hd was partitioned.
I have been geting a disk boot failure error on trying to boot from the CDROM with the XP installation disk. Having originaly had the bios set incorrectly I have now rechecked it and ensured the boot order is set to CDROM, HD-0 and the floppy.
I have ensured that the primary hd has been detected, detection is set to to Auto and Access Mode to LBA following the Seagate instructions. I have now also disconnected the secondary drive to exclude that from the picture until I get into the primary drive.
I have also reset the jumper on the new primary to Master having disconnected the secondary drive.
Earlier tonight I switched the hard drives between my computer and my mothers computer, because (ironically) her's was better for gaming. After a quick reinstall of XP Home Edition, my computer was good to go. But setting hers up proved to be a bit more of a challenge.I loaded up the hard drive, booted up with the XP Pro Edition (it's what she uses) and the installation was going great. At about 9 minutes left, I get the error message saying something like: "This software has not passed the Windows Logo Test and will not be installed" or something to that nature. I clicked OK, it popped up again, I clicked OK again. This time, the installation finished up and strangely everything started up. I logged into one of the accounts, only to find that no icons had loaded and everything was going horribly slow. I couldn't right click on the desktop. I couldn't click on the start button. The only thing I was able to do was click on the bar at the bottom, which does me no good at all anyway. Something was using up the computers resources like mad, and strangely the LAN light on the DSL modem was going berserk.
I'm thinking maybe a complete reinstall will do the trick. The only problem is that when trying to do a fresh install on the C: it popped up with a warning message saying "Installing an OS onto a partitioned drive that already contains an OS may result in software not running properly." I backed away from this and re-tried the repair installation. To my dismay, the error came back up again. I'm calling it quits for now and hope to have a reply tomorrow. I really need to get this fixed soon As a side note, I used the 'Repair Installation' choice on my Hard Drive, and everything works right now. For some reason XP Pro is a bit picky. How do I get passed this error to the point where the computer is useable again?
last time i was to format the hard drive of my hp laptop while files were copied through os cd all of sudden due to power cut the installation had to cancelled, when next time I tried to install the os my laptop screen showed a message "NTLDR IS MISSING..TO RESTART PRESS CTRL+ALT+DELETE" BUT EVEN TRYING TO RESTART IT COULD NOT
I have recently had to format my Dell Dimension 2400 desktop due to the fact it was full of viruses
I used an XP home sp2 disc to format and reinstall the operating system no probs, but now the screen resolution won't go above 640x480 pixels, and everything is massive, I'm guessing this is a driver issue
