View 7 RepliesI have an Acer Aspire notebook, w/ 37 gig hard drive partitioned into two drives. D (backup, archive) is 98% empty. C (everything else) is91% full. Windows NT will not let me defragment the heavily fragmented C partition for lack of minimum 15% free space on the drive. How can I go in and reasign the drive sizes, without dumping everything and reformating? I'm handy with a power tool, but computers frustrate me.

After running my computer would act normal untill i shut it off, then windows xp would not load again. I get a blank screen with a blinking dash in the top left of the screen. They have been under replaced for free by seagate so i am wondering. Have i had bad luck with hard drives or could there be a problem with other parts of my computer?
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo, I have the same problem few seems to have here, my 2nd HDD doesn't show up. The problem came when I formated my main HDD and installed XP on it. After that I can't get the 2nd HDD working.First of all, it shows on BIOS, its connected with cables (tried several, thought if the cables were broken), shows on control panel, on system. But I can't see any drives, not a single one. It has worked correctly for over 5 years, which 4 of them has been with the main HDD and XP, the same thing I have now.The 2nd HDD is Samsung SV4002H, I have few pics to clear the problem.
View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently I found System Restore not working. It would neither restore to an earlier time nor create a new restore point. I tried doing a virus scan using Avast, rebooting, checking that it is (supposed to be) running and safe mode.Disconnecting from the Internet and turning off antivirus and firewall also made no difference. I also turned it off and on again. I noticed that initially it said it was monitoring drives C, D & E but after turning on again it only showed drives C & D. These drives are all partitions on my HD.On checking E I found that it had no file system and was advised to format it. On attempting this I got Format did not complete successfully.I also attempted to Defrag and got Disk Defragmenter could not start.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI just built myself a brand new PC last week. Two times now, I've woken up and had this message on the screen from AVG Free Edition: "Something bad has happened to the application...". I click ok, and go about my business, but nothing works. I open My Computer, and it comes up, but sits there with its little search light forever. It seems as though my hard drive has stopped, but things left in memory continue to work. Some things open (like things I used the day before), some dont. The things that open don't really work, they just open and sit there. I hit the reset button on the case and everything works when the PC boots back up. This is Windows XP Pro. I DO have the option of Stopping both of my hard drives, the same as you'd stop a USB flash drive, etc. I've never run SATA before, so I assume it has to do with that? I do not have it set to stop my hard drives in the power options.

Any ideas as to how I can get a good defrag on this machine or what is happening here. I have run two malware applications or programs and my antivirus. Nothing there it appears to be clean.
View 13 Replies View RelatedWhen I start SR I can only see one restore point, the one I made the day after I replaced my hard drive. But now when I try to create a new restore point it allows me to enter the name, then after I click OK I get the message ''System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer , and then run System restore again.''After I restart I run System Restore again and get the same message.
Also, the restore points I made before I replaced my hard drive no longer show up.When I replaced the drive (with a Maxtore 80 gb), I used their MaxBurn program to duplicate everything form the old one to the new one. It boots from the new C drive and runs OK and all my programs are there, but some act strangely. I'm wondering if these programs are looking for some kind of system volume information tho make sure they are still on the original system.
I am on the road and trying to do a system restore. I use an external hard drive in my office but I do not have the external hard drive with me now. I can not get the restore to complete and I can not get the undo to fully complete. Is this not working fully because I am not hooked up to my external hard drive? When I initiated the restore it asked something about the external hard drive.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy hard drive crashed beyond salvage. I bought a new hard drive, installed it and used my recovery disks to get the basics back. It is a Sony Vaio laptop (PCG-Gr390, to be specific). It has Windows XP, pre SP1/SP2. When I installed it, I went through the formatting process and formatted it for the first time, being that it's a new HD. Everything worked as expected, but I have yet to update anything because I can not successfully connect to the Internet.
All efforts to create a connection were unsuccessful.Next to my laptop is a slow Dell desktop, runnung a fully updated XP operating system. Using the same cable modem, connection to the Internet was fine with the desktop for both wired and wireless, but not the newly formatted laptop. My ethernet jack and wireless card on the laptop are working (according to the device manager).
I'm running Windows XP sp2. Problem is, my C drive fills up. I have removed all but the latest restore point, reduced the max amount of restore point storage to 5%, and removed all of the programs that I don't use very often, moved all of my files to the D drive, clean the cache and remove cookies regularly, and use disk cleanup a lot. After all of this, I only have 1.25GB left in C drive. Not even enough space left to defrag the drive. Anyone have any suggestions? Before long I won't have ANY programs left. I don't use a TV card or anything like that, although I do have the capability to record but never use it.

I was curious if I could defrag my hard disk while I am listening to music using iTunes. I only have one hard disk and all the music is on that hard disk.
Defrag runs for 2-3 minutes maybe and the computer freezes or defrag stalls. I have checked for viruses. I have run defrag in safe mode.

I ususally get the desktop down below 2 percent fragmentation in one try, while my laptop rarely get below 4 percent fragmentation. about a fourth of the time it actually ends up more fragmented after running speed disk.

Here's what I did that may or may not have something to do with it. Yesterday I resized the drive that C is on and made four partitions each one for a particular person so that the files didn't get mixed.I used Norton Partition Magic and at the end of each task a window would pop up stating that I should make a new rescue disk

So, I downloaded and installed WLM again, and lo and behold the same problem occurred, the defrag program would not defrag all the files. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell computer where one of the loading .dll files came up 'missing' one day, so it won't boot. I want to get all the photos and other docs off the hard drive. I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.

I had this idea, see if anybody has an opinion about this. My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently helped someone save the documents off of their computer after it crashed (it was missing a Windows file. I tried the repair command and it wouldn't work, so I decided to save the files and reformat the hard drive).I plugged the hard drive into a working computer and pulled all the documents off of it (VERY slowly) onto an external hard drive.
Every once in awhile I wouldn't be able to pull a picture or document off because of a cyclic redundancy check error. I just moved on and saved what I could. I assumed it was because the hard drive was already bad so I just moved what I could.
I am cloning my existing hard drive in my laptop (sata) to an external hard drive (pata) in preparation for installing a new larger hard drive (sata)in the laptop. Can I, or how do I transfer the cloned data from the external (pata) to the new internal hard drive (sata)? Thanks in advance and I apoligize if this is a rudimentary question as this is my first time attempting something like this.
