Remove Particular Items To Recover Space
Nov 1, 2008
I also am having an issue with 100% of CPU usage being used. I have years of backups from using Registry First Aid and wondered if I can delete these. Maybe I should not have it checked to create a back up each time it is run? Also should I run a hijack this report because of CPU usage or are they even related. If someone could send me a link to a list of programs that need to be running maybe I can shut some of them down.

Seems like every time I open some application it puts a link on the start menu, I realize I can delete this by right clicking it and choosing "remove this item from the list". How do I prevent it from being put there in the first place?

Three weeks later I get a message stating Im low on disc space and down to about 11% free. I am totally confused. Did not install new programs, pictures, music etc. Seems like it just happend to itself.

I was capturing digital video from camcorder and after compressing and burning it to DVD, deleted this file of 12GB size, since it is bigger in size it was not even shown in Recycle bin and whole space occupied by this file never recoved. After this incident a 6GB file from digital video capture happend exactly similar way. So in essence 18GB space is gone somewhere without any clue. Later tried running Norton tools and file system check, but no use. None of these able to detect this file. Searching the files of the same name(assuming misplaced somewhere) returned empty list and recyle bin is also empty. Also tried looking for big size file in C:WINDOWSTemp but no use.

I correct that deleted Recycle Bin files still remain unseen on the hard drive? If so, is there any way of removing the deleted "Recycle Bin" items without affecting anything else on the Hard Disk? My original and now #2 computer has a very small Hard Disk (15 GB). I have cleaned out everything but the OS and installed programs. I would like to remove the one GB of My Documents files I put into the Recycle Bin and then further deleted from there, if indeed they are still resident on the Hard Disk. My intent is to hopefully increase performance of that machine, which also has a very slow processor and only 190 MB RAM. Right now the OS and programs occupy one-half of the Hard Disk. I am running "XP Home" on that computer. I will only use C #2 for reaching the Internet should my #1 computer "go down. (I would be lost without that daily exercise!) C #1 is fully backed up weekly to an external Hard Disk.

Hello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?

How does one remove items in the ad/remove screen when messages come up to the effect that the program has been incompletely uninstalled and cannot find certain files needed for removal. Am not comfortable going into the registry and doing anything because I do not know anything same and have been warned that unless you are an expert - leave the registry completely ALONE! Have been frightened to even open the registry let alone thinking about tinkering in it.

This problem only happens to files that i delete from the OPEN or SAVE AS windows rather than deleting from the file folder itself. For example if I were to go to a folder in my external hard drive and delete a file that way it's not a problem to empty it from the recycle bin. But if I was saving a file or opening a file from an app and I delete it from that dialog box those are the files that just can't seem to be remove from the recycle bin. I know it's due to my external drive because when I turned it off the files are not in the recycle bin anymore. Now i tried using the Task Manager to turn off all processes dealing with my external hard drive but I still can't remove those files from the recycle bin; unless there are other files that i need to stop the process of.

I have a ton of program in my system tray (which I've been told means they are running somehow, and presumably using up resources). I'm assuming this might be contributing to the slow speed of my computer. Can anybody tell me how to prevent these programs from starting up whenever I start the computer. Some of them are programs I hardly ever use and I'm sure I could find them to open them if I ever need them. I'm running Windows 2000 Professional.

I had added a couple of free standing applications and I cannot remove them no matter what I try. I cannot even rename them. I have tried changing the application location and then clicking on the Start Menu item so that I get an error message. The message asks whether I want to remove the item from the Start Menu and I click yes but that too does not work. I am tired of looking through the registry and cannot find anything relevant.

I want to remove about 8 items from the right click context menu either in Explorer or while on the Desktop. I read an article that said all you had to do was edit the Registry by doing a search for ShellNew and remove the entire key if you didn't want any of them. I did this several times and did find all of them at least 5 times. But they are still there.

You can see which previous items that have been run or are currently running on your system tray by clicking on Start >> Settings >> Taskbar and Start Menu, tick the box that says "Hide inactive icons" then click "customize". There you will see a list of Current and Past items. If you would like to remove the past items then follow these steps: 1. Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to the FAQ on how to get started. 2.Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerTrayNotify 3. Delete the keys Past Icons Stream and Icon Streams 4. Exit regedit and restart Explorer. 5. To end explorer right clicking anywhere on the system tray and choosing "Task Manager". Click on the "Processes" tab and find Explorer.exe. Click the End Process button. Your whole systemtray should disappear. 6. To restart Explorer, while still in Task Manager, go to the "applications" tab and choose the New Task.. button. Simply type Explorer.exe and click OK.

What I want to do is this:
When I go to START>RUN>"msconfig">startup tab I have many listed entries that I know are no longer needed on my computer, but have yet to find a way to delete them.
For example: My mom wanted me to download this TalkingBuddy program for my son, I did it, thought it was stupid so I uninstalled it. To me all components should be removed from the computer. However, when I go to START>RUN>"msconfig">startup tab I still see an entry for TalkingBuddy that can be checked to run at startup.
There are several other entries like this that I know I don't need and would like to know how to remove them. I also suspect that there might be some entries on there that look like they are needed but actually belong to other uninstalled or deleted programs.
Secondly, if anyone knows how to find and remove files that go to programs that linger around after you have uninstalled the program can you please tell me how to do that also. By this I mean for instance, that I have uninstalled Norton and now use Mcaffee, but there are still files that belong to symantec on my computer. I suspect that there are many other useless files from programs no longer on my computer that can also be deleted as well.
