I was capturing digital video from camcorder and after compressing and burning it to DVD, deleted this file of 12GB size, since it is bigger in size it was not even shown in Recycle bin and whole space occupied by this file never recoved. After this incident a 6GB file from digital video capture happend exactly similar way. So in essence 18GB space is gone somewhere without any clue. Later tried running Norton tools and file system check, but no use. None of these able to detect this file. Searching the files of the same name(assuming misplaced somewhere) returned empty list and recyle bin is also empty. Also tried looking for big size file in C:WINDOWSTemp but no use.
Not sure what has happened but I completely restored my system with a new install three weeks ago. Reinstalled all applications etc. 50% of my C Drive was free space. Three weeks later I get a message stating Im low on disc space and down to about 11% free. I am totally confused. Did not install new programs, pictures, music etc. Seems like it just happend to itself.
I recently tried to update XP home sp1 to XP home sp2. I got the screen with options to startup in safe mode. I then used add/remove programs to uninstall xp2 and return to xp1 but I seemed to have lost a lot of hd space. Does anyone know how to recover my lost space?
I also am having an issue with 100% of CPU usage being used. I have years of backups from using Registry First Aid and wondered if I can delete these. Maybe I should not have it checked to create a back up each time it is run? Also should I run a hijack this report because of CPU usage or are they even related. If someone could send me a link to a list of programs that need to be running maybe I can shut some of them down.
I recently deleted a Windows Self-Extracting EXE file from one of my partitions. The file has been deleted, but the disk space hasn't been recovered. This has happened to on numerous occasions in the past and I can't seem to find the cause of this.

Hello everyone. I am currently using Windows XP SP2 on a Thinkpad T43 laptop. My main partition which houses windows xp is 34 GB total size. When I highlight the C: drive in "My Computer", it tells me that I have 10GB of free space (therefore I'm using 24GB). When, however, I double click on C: and go into that folder, select all (and yes, I have enabled viewing hidden files/folders), right-click and choose properties, I am then told that C: only contains 15GB of files/folders. Where is this missing 5GB?
Tried to cut-paste a 900 mb file from hard disk to a pen drive. The operation failed. And now, though the file is nowhere on the hard disk, XP doesn't recognise that those 900 mb are supposed to be free. Of course, I've learnt my lesson. Copy-paste is kosher, cut-paste is evil. All the same, any idea how I can get those 900 mb back? I hope I can avoid formatting. It's simply dreadful to begin installing everythign from scratch.
I only have a 70GB hard drive and having recently used "treesize" have found that the reason I was always running out of space appears to be down to the 55GB of Windows INstaller Patches that are on the computer. I am sure that most of these are not required but have no idea what they are, what they do, or if they need to be there or not. As their individual sizes range from a few KB to hundreds of MB, I would like to delete as many as ppossible but need advice as to what / how
I have a compaq presario running windows xp with wireless network installed. When i performed a standard recovery program on my computer it was supposed to install the program without affecting any of the data on my system but it my three user profiles became one. I got all of my files but the most important one will not open and a message appears stating that the file is not accessible. The data is still there because the memory is still used up on the hard drive but the properties indicates as there is nothing.
How do I recover an accidentaly deleted file from the recycle bin? By mistake, my recycle bin was emptied/deleted of its contents and there was a file in there I needed.
I have a regular xp computer and today, a 2003 word file was deleted from the recycle bin I needed that file! I don't know much about computers, so how could I restore my file so I can print it?
Alright, here's the situation. And sorry it's long, I'm trying to be detailed.I'm trying to recover a Word file for my gf that's about 18 pages long. Im reasonably confidant that I've figured out how the file was removed, but Im not so sure how to recover it.began editing a version of the document (about 8 pages saved a version of this document with the same name to a different folder finished editing document. Now there is one 18 page, and one 8 page document with the same name, in different folders copied original (8 page) document to new folder, overwriting new (18 page) document
How can i recover access permission on particuler files and folders? Because i am not able to open some word and excel files even i am logged with administrator user.
I got a message from Outlook asking permission to compress my e-mail file folders. It's done this before and I've always let it with no problem.I fired up my computer yesterday and discovered that all my e-mail folders, all received and sent messages have disappeared.I thought my wife may have accidentally erased the files so I checked the Recycle Bin. There were several .bak files with the same names of the file folders.I figured hit the restore button and the files would be restored.
Have win xp. On my pc I am trying to play some music that I downloaded. I get the error message "THIS FILE DOES NOT HAVE A PROGRAM ASSOCIATED WITH IT FOR PERFORMING THIS ACTION. CREATE AN ASSOCIATION IN THE " FOLDER OPTION" CONTROL PANEL did go to the CONTROL PANEL and to the FOLDER OPTION, but I have no idea on what to do at this point.
I use a batch files for various maintenance stuff.Get this: When the batch file (.bat or .cmd), is in ONE PARTICULAR DIRECTORY, the defrag command in it echos endlessly, but doesn't execute. Even if the batch file contains only just the one line.If the batch file is in any other directory, it works fine. Of course, I keep all my batch files in the same directory ("C:Program FilesBruce"), and I can find nothing anywhere in Windows that should cause this directory to be any different than any other. Addition a few minutes later: Now the simple one-line batch file will sometimes work, sometimes not work, when in other directories. This is weird.
i'm trying to delete a file in dos that shows up when i do dir but when i try to delete it, it says it can't be found. it is a virus that i'm trying to get rid off. it's in the windows logon shell in winntsystem32 folder.
I am trying to write a batch file to strip the 4 leading characters from the name of all files in a directory. I tried using rename but was not having any luck getting the pattern matching to strip the characters off. Please let me know if anyone knows a way to do this in a batch file.
I gotta be missing something basic, but this is just a real nuisance for me. Would appreciate any thoughts. Software is XP SP3.I have been using XP to view/edit several subfolders of jpegs stored in a Kodaks Folder. I prefer to usthe "filmstrip view". I am able to rename file name from something like 101_2900 to kidname whatever, but the new name never appears onscreen unless I either force a F5 screen refresh or back out and re-enter the file folder. I can probably edit photo names in Corel Paint Shop Pro or another program, but this is just driving me nuts.Sometimes when I turn on the computer and decide to rename files, the new names appear immediately without refreshes, ect. Just wonder if I am missing a file property setting or something basic that I haven't noticed.
It's been a while now that at windows startup, I always get a pop up from my norton antivirus 2005 saying that the config file is not installed.I have to give several ok in order to close definitively the window. After that, norton works fine.
Windows XP Home, version 2002, SP2. Windows explorer will not find files that I can navigate to. Since I can navigate to them I know they exist. I'm looking for heart rate monitor files using .hrm as the search term and WE says it can't find any files. I can go to C:/program files etc. and get to the files. File formats are xxxxxx.hrm, with xxxxxx being the date. Searching for .hrm on my laptop finds all of the files with no problem.
Tried to use her wireless adapter on my wireless network and ever since that day I've had printer problems. What happens when I say print is the printer icon appears in my taskbar, hangs around for about 15 seconds (as if printing is occuring) then it goes away but the printer never prints. If I open Control Panels and go to Printer, it too breifly shows one document printing for a few seconds, as if it is printing. It is as if the file has been spooled, but the spooler doesn't send the file on to the printer. My desire is to print. My question (hopefully on that road to printing): Is there a print spooler in Windows XP? Any way to monitor it other than control panel printer?
I've noticed that the dot-url part of the file name does not show in Windows Explorer for web link files/shortcuts even though I have Explorer set to show the entire name, including extensions. Why is this exception made in Windows Explorer to only this one extension?

I have a problem with audio, every once in a while I try to play an audio file and it just goes fastforward and doesn't play, sometimes it just gets stuck after 2 seconds.I tried to check my audio card (phonic firefly 302) and it's fine, I think the problem is with the controller or something Whenever I restart my computer/the audio card the problem is solved, but it keeps on happening.
