It's been a while now that at windows startup, I always get a pop up from my norton antivirus 2005 saying that the config file is not installed.I have to give several ok in order to close definitively the window.After that, norton works fine.

Every time I turn on my computer and log into my account on Windows I get between one and three error messages that say, "Norton does not support the repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall." I thought at first this was stopping some needed application, but the more it happened and from reading Norton's alert logs, I think it is malware trying to repair itself and Norton is stopping it. The alert logs say something about a Trojan Horse everytime I turn my computer on. In addition, if I go online as soon as I log onto Windows then it says that a "recent attempt to attack my computer was blocked." - I think this is related to the error message and Trojan horse

Secondly, whenever I open Microsoft/Windows Update, it opens in Firefox, and shows everything (cause of IE Tab add-on), but it opens a blank IE windows as well... The URL works fine in both browsers. Also an error pops up whenever I open Gigaget (probably cause of Ad banner, but I've never seen it). Screenshot of error:
Lastly, and most importantly, it seems that the Explorer file manager on my Guest account is messed up. Whenever I open a folder, or any shortcuts that open by Explorer (ex. my Computer) Search pops up. Then if I search something, and it shows a folder (and probably anything else opened by Explorer), when I try to open it, this kind of thing happens: There might be other things that I may not have noticed, but I'm sure about these ones.
I have a Dell Dimension 5150 with up to date nortons antivirus, had a software problem with my PC and needed to do a complete restore this evening, on completing this I updated my Nortons and discovered I had a virus, Message is as follows: IEbrand.exe within C:Documents & Settings ALLAN'SLocalTempBJ149.tmp is infected with the Trojan. Start Page Virus
Repair: Failed
Quarantine: Failed
Delete: Failed
Computer is still infected This may be the reason for the software problems I had that caused me to do a complete restore this evening (don't know)
My problem is is when I booted my comp up yesterday, norton comes up with some odd error about not being able to scan e-mail or instant messenger for viruses, and my internet on just this computer will not work. Now this happened with my other comp when the hard drive was failing. The computer will also at some reboots take forever to get into windows.Sometimes when I try to get into network connections or my computer, it will just hang or I get the flashlight icon scanning. I was able to back up most of my stuff, but when I tried to reformat, it kept saying to close all windows and I ended every program I could think of.I also tried a system restore to Saturday when it was working normal, but I have had no luck. Is it something with windows or is another HDD going? I'm thinking of just RMA'ing the HDD and do a whole new install. My only other option is to use a Linux Suse disk I have and boot from that and see if it works. View 2 Replies View RelatedMy problem in a nutshell. I'm trying to install XP as a repair but it isn't going well. I've done it before and I'm quite familiar with the steps, but this time there is one new wrinkle. Windows tells me it sees two partitions, which it shouldn't. There is only one, but it is comprised of two HDD's in a stripe setup. There is a total of 1.2TB of space between the two of them. The free space is somewhere in the 800-900 GB range before the machine started having problems. Windows keeps saying that there is only 900 MB of free space, which is not enough to install windows. Laughable. There is a ton of free space on those drives, and there is an existing XP installation, albiet one that doesn't work.

I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). I have three (3) questions:1. When I'm closing down Windows XP (Home Edition), I continually receive an error showing "XtkU.exe" cannot. I have checked everywhere and cannot find out what this file is associated with. In addition I have gone through my system and purged all files associated with this executable from the registry. They pop right back in there with a system restart. I'm lost and confused now because I don't know what application uses this file.2. When closing down I receive the same Norton error message another user gets."ccaps.exe" at signoff. I will try and remove Norton to see if that works. 3. The user "quick switch" does not work any longer. I am not sure what is causing that either. Do you think it may be associated with the WtkU file?

The computer will not boot after trying to run Autocheck (file is missing or corrupt) and the gives an error. I tried to use the Windows XP disc and the setup sees the partition but cannot recognise the format.Unfortunatley I don't know any commands in command line / repair console. Does anyone know commands to get the machine to run checks / get the machine to install XP? Formatting is the last option as there are some data on the machine that is not backed up.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have tried FIXMBR, FIXBOOT and now trying to reinstall using the guide in another thread. I do not get the same R option when I get to the SETUP screen. It looks to me like it will fresh install XP and wipe everything. Originally I was getting missing SYSTEM file and boot stops. I found what I thought was the SYSTEM file and put it into the directory but it still will not boot. I just get another new error.

Even if the batch file contains only just the one line.If the batch file is in any other directory, it works fine. Of course, I keep all my batch files in the same directory ("C:Program FilesBruce"), and I can find nothing anywhere in Windows that should cause this directory to be any different than any other. Addition a few minutes later: Now the simple one-line batch file will sometimes work, sometimes not work, when in other directories. This is weird.

Software is XP SP3.I have been using XP to view/edit several subfolders of jpegs stored in a Kodaks Folder. I prefer to usthe "filmstrip view". I am able to rename file name from something like 101_2900 to kidname whatever, but the new name never appears onscreen unless I either force a F5 screen refresh or back out and re-enter the file folder. I can probably edit photo names in Corel Paint Shop Pro or another program, but this is just driving me nuts.Sometimes when I turn on the computer and decide to rename files, the new names appear immediately without refreshes, ect. Just wonder if I am missing a file property setting or something basic that I haven't noticed.

I'm looking for heart rate monitor files using .hrm as the search term and WE says it can't find any files. I can go to C:/program files etc. and get to the files. File formats are xxxxxx.hrm, with xxxxxx being the date. Searching for .hrm on my laptop finds all of the files with no problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was capturing digital video from camcorder and after compressing and burning it to DVD, deleted this file of 12GB size, since it is bigger in size it was not even shown in Recycle bin and whole space occupied by this file never recoved. After this incident a 6GB file from digital video capture happend exactly similar way. So in essence 18GB space is gone somewhere without any clue. Later tried running Norton tools and file system check, but no use. None of these able to detect this file. Searching the files of the same name(assuming misplaced somewhere) returned empty list and recyle bin is also empty. Also tried looking for big size file in C:WINDOWSTemp but no use.

What happens when I say print is the printer icon appears in my taskbar, hangs around for about 15 seconds (as if printing is occuring) then it goes away but the printer never prints. If I open Control Panels and go to Printer, it too breifly shows one document printing for a few seconds, as if it is printing. It is as if the file has been spooled, but the spooler doesn't send the file on to the printer. My desire is to print. My question (hopefully on that road to printing): Is there a print spooler in Windows XP? Any way to monitor it other than control panel printer?
