I was told that I needed a 64 bit software os to run 8 meg ddr2 memory ..I looked at windows xp profesional ...do they have two different xp profesionals and one does not support 64 bit ?

Secondly, whenever I open Microsoft/Windows Update, it opens in Firefox, and shows everything (cause of IE Tab add-on), but it opens a blank IE windows as well... The URL works fine in both browsers. Also an error pops up whenever I open Gigaget (probably cause of Ad banner, but I've never seen it). Screenshot of error:
Lastly, and most importantly, it seems that the Explorer file manager on my Guest account is messed up. Whenever I open a folder, or any shortcuts that open by Explorer (ex. my Computer) Search pops up. Then if I search something, and it shows a folder (and probably anything else opened by Explorer), when I try to open it, this kind of thing happens: There might be other things that I may not have noticed, but I'm sure about these ones.
Running a core2duo is there a benefit to using one or the other WIndows XP pro or Windows xp pro 64 - bit?

I bought my wife an HP desktop and ordered it with Vista 64bit OS. We ran into some issue that led to us buying a new printer and it does not run some video games we like to play. We just tolerated it for a while but she hates it so I was thinking about buying a copy of XP and loading it up on her system. Are there any issues with doing this or should it just work? I expect I will have to download some drivers for 32bit but that should be easy enough

I am having a hard time finding stores that either sell floppy drives or external floppy drives. But I need one in order to install my RAID drivers so that my SATA drive can be detected for installing XP on. I have the following setup (Stuff you need to know):Asus Vintage AH-1 barebones motherboard (AMD Socket 939)SATA 80GB harddrive (on RAID using the ULi utility)IDE 80GB harddrive, set to cable select, because this is technically my backup slave driver (too slow to run software from) (Yes, this system is outdated, but I need to make due with what I have until I can build myself the system I want) I need to be able to install my RAID drivers so that I can have my SATA drive detected. I know its full of spyware and what not, so I went and bought another 2gb kit and brought win xp 64 w/ me.I go and and wipeout the machine, install xp 64 and boot it up. I then realize that this machine only had 512MB in it. I open it up (yah I know should have checked first) and see that his MB only has 2 slots in it. View 9 Replies View RelatedI just tried to install XP Pro x64 on my Dell XPS 720 PC. After it loads all the drivers, it crashes with a blue screen, giving me an error message. I tried to reset my BIOS to factory defaults, which screwed it up entirely and now I have to reinstall my original operating system (same, just 32bit) too, though I worried because the setup doesn't seem to recognise the entire size of my hard drive, or the other partitions. It gave me a BAD PBR as I tried to boot normally.I had my hard drive partitioned with Norton Partition Magic, maybe this caused it? Please can you advise how to fix this!

Anyways, everything is running great except for a few 3rd party programs I like to used with a few games. I want to install regular XP Pro but have my HD as one single 80gig partition. My question is, Is it possible to have 2 selectable bootable OS's on the same partition? If so, how and if not, Is there a way to downgrade from 64bit of windows to standard 32 without formating the drive? Worst comes to worst, I could reformat and reinstall everything all over again but I would rather avoid that if possible.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to install a new version of XP on my computer mainly because I can't handle 64 bit and it's refusal to be compatible with my wireless card. First of all, I do not have a registered version of the 64 bit due to no internet connection which didn't allow me to register my copy and in turn locking my computer unil I do so. My friend gve me a copy of XP pro SP3 and I want to install it, but I have a few issues. How do I delete the old OS? How do I install the new one? I have been having some problems with opening the bios and what not, I am using ASUS P5N73-AM mobo. I really need help with this, because it is limiting my use of the computer, a brand new computer which I have not been able to consistently use since the time I bought it.

Normal boot shows the windows initial screen, but eventually just restarts, safe mode does the same thing whether it's with network, command line or plain safe mode. Last known good configuration does the same.Needed to use a file so decided to remove the HD and re-install to another PC. I did have access to the file in question but now I'd like to fix the problem.
The other system uses AVG. I started a scan and it detected Cekar.d (A0003977.exe, wdfmgr.exe and initially ntldr.exe), Dropper.Inor (ntdetect.hta, A0003979.hta), PSW.Generic5.ABVW (ctfmona.exe), PSW.OnlineGames.AAFI (ctfmonb.exe), PSW.Generic5.AFYK (ctfmond.exe), PSW.OnlineGames.ZWT (LotusHlp.exe) and some others but for whatever reason the scan stopped. I restarted it and now the AV still finds most of the threats it was seeing before but not Cekar.d. in the ntldr.exe file.
What does end for support for a Windows mean?As far as I understand it means that updates (even critical) won't be available after that date.But how about a Service Pack. E.g. Windows XP SP2 deadline is set for 11 July 2010. Will Windows XP owners who have Windows XP SP2 version on a disc be able to successfully activate their copies of Windows after that date.

I recently installed Windows XP Media Edition, and everything works fine, except the "Help and Support" application off the Start Menu. When I open that, it comes up in Chinese. Everything else is English. Anybody know how to fix this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI wanted to make this my special post, as its my 1000, and encourage all members to use their System Restore more, I keep a system restore icon on my desktop and make a restore point everyday, I know the computer is suppose to do it, but it makes me feel better, evertime I make drastic changes or questionable downloads I make a restore point, I simply type call it rp it only takes less than 10 seconds, if everyone did this we really could cut down on ourTech Support. I have a the Radeon X300/X550 series for my VGA. Is my VGA perhaps too old to support Direct X 9.0? Or can you show me how to overwrite 8.1 with 9.0.
