I have been having an issue with Windows XP's Help & Support ever since I installed Service Pack 2; under the "Did you know?" section it's supposed to connect to the Internet and download new links, right? Well, it doesn't do that anymore.I did some Googling but failed to find anything helpful so far.I've been using the built-in personal firewall ever since installing SP2, which I'm guessing *may* have something to do with it.
View 8 RepliesThis might sound like a strange request but, I am trying to use WSUS Offline updates and I need to have a copy of service pack 1. For offline to work you need at least SP1. I know I will come across someone who does not have XP with service pack 1 on their OS disk or their recover disk. I own a copy that does not have SP 1. If I do I know there will be others who do not have it either.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI added offline files under a user's account some reason some of the offline files have access 'other R/W'. Some have 'user R/W', and some have both.Only those offline files that have access 'user R/W' and both 'user R/W' and 'other RW' work. When I try to make it Not offline available and then again offline available, it's still the same.So the user get's an 'access denied' or 'file location not found' error when he tries to open files that have 'other R/W'.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI got hijacked the other night and ran a program to remove the bad programs. They have all been removed from the system according to the program but I am still having trouble opening files and folders including My Computer and Control Panel. I think this may be because, I've heard, hijacking software alters certain things on the computer so that you can't simply access the control panel and undo all of the trouble it has caused. The error message that I recieve every time I try to open files, folders, etc. reads:
"explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed. You will have to restart the program. An error log is being created." The computer will occassionally freeze up after I click ok.
every time i connect to the net with my modem and start outlook express i get this annoying prompt "you are currently working offline, would you like to go online now" when im connected to the net.if anyone knows how to stop this every time i start outlook express 6.

I've been in Disk Management, I've scanned the disk, I've rebooted, and Disk 1 is there, but the message is it's offline--and after I did the reboot I got the message that the hard drive USB had been recognized--but it ain't there.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an old Sony VAIO (running Win Xp) that I am using a print server. The VAIO is connected to a HP PSC. The VAIO is on a wireless network along with two other laptops. One laptop is running Win Xp and the other is running Vista. Everything was working fine as far as printing went until I reinstalled the OS on the Win Xp machine (same OS). Previously the VAIO would go offline due to hibernation and so if I tried to print something from the Xp machine, it would get in the queue and get printed when I turned the VAIO on. Now the print jobs are not getting in a queue when the VAIO is offline.I don't know what I did right before and so I don't know how to remedy the problem.

I recently installed Windows XP Media Edition, and everything works fine, except the "Help and Support" application off the Start Menu. When I open that, it comes up in Chinese. Everything else is English. Anybody know how to fix this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI wanted to make this my special post, as its my 1000, and encourage all members to use their System Restore more, I keep a system restore icon on my desktop and make a restore point everyday, I know the computer is suppose to do it, but it makes me feel better, evertime I make drastic changes or questionable downloads I make a restore point, I simply type call it rp it only takes less than 10 seconds, if everyone did this we really could cut down on ourTech Support. when i go to Start,Run,type msconfig, i get the error message:Windows cannot find msconfig.Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again.To search for a file click the Start button and then click Search; same thing happens ,I do have msconfig in the computer and the path is: C:/WINDOWS/pchealth/helpctr/binaries. Same path for the Help & Support.
I `m aware that there is not reference(or key)for the above subjects(msconfig-Help & Support) in the registry and i`m not confident enough to alter it, so
I'm working on my Father In Laws' computer, and for some reason, we can't open his Help and Support Center. I have searched everywhere to find the right path to get to it, and no luck. It worked recently, but it's gone now. I have gone through the Services.msc looking for anything that may be disabled that would effect it, but nothing so far.

I tried borrowing a friend's CD for XP Pro sp1 and the files seemed to install properly from the i386lang directory on the CD but the language functionality still does not work.Does anyone know if you can download the language pack from MS. Otherwise, it seems that I need the contents of the i386lang directory from an XP Pro sp2 CD, which I don't have.

The advised solution from Dell is to set prefetch to only boot rather than boot and applications. Empty the prefetch folder and in effect not use prefetch as it was designed for Windows XP, Is this a legitimate solution for customers experiencing this problem? I always thought prefetch was supposed to "speed things up". Any suggestions about this? Is Dell just blowing the customers off?
