Dell Technical Support

Dell has a problem with some Dell Vostro 200 pc's which involves a black screen just after boot. The advised solution from Dell is to set prefetch to only boot rather than boot and applications. Empty the prefetch folder and in effect not use prefetch as it was designed for Windows XP, Is this a legitimate solution for customers experiencing this problem? I always thought prefetch was supposed to "speed things up". Any suggestions about this? Is Dell just blowing the customers off?

I had my Dell Dimension 4700 and an ancient Compaq plugged into the same Gold series Belkin surge protector. After a storm, the Compaq is fine but the Dell rolled over. I could not even boot from the CD, but, after installing the replacement hard drive, I was able to boot and install WinXP. I want to put my sick disk in as a second drive to see if I can get anything off of it before shipping it off to a data rescue company but Dell says that they don't support 2 hard drives. There is a second bay and a spare jack on the power cable but the data cable goes straight from the otherboard to the disk with no additional plugs on it. Where can I get another one of these cables that has 2 jacks? What is the cable called? Is this even the kind of cable/interface that allows things to be daisy-chained?

i am on an XP operating system on a dell. everytime one of the users logs off, we get the window that says "ending program sprtcmd.exe", and then we have to go and end program manually every time we log off. i read a similar post on here where someone was having that problem, and was told it was related to the dell support center, and they were advised to uninstall it. i tried to uninstall the dell support center, and this message pops up: "Error 1306. Another application has exclusive access to the file c:/Documents and settingsBarbLocal SettingsApplication DataSupport SoftDell Support CenterBarbstate logssprtcmd.log.
Please shut down all other applications then click Retry"
It will not let me click retry, i have to close out the little window or hit cancel, then it goes through a little more of the "windows configuring", and then i get a little window for "add or remove programs" that says "fatal error during installation" and then that's that. it won't let me uninstall the program! i know this isn't a major problem or anything, but still having to manually click that window everytime i log off is quite aggrivating.

In the last 2 weeks I have contacted Dell chat support about problems with my Dell Dimension 4700 PC.I tried the two solutions suggested by tech. support, neither of which worked. I finally stumbled upon the solution late last night. Are others having the same problems with Dell support? They were once famous for their support. Now, it's laughable.

if i decide to dump linux, can you suggest me links where i can find technical information (or if you wanna tell me here on this forum i'd appreciate) about how to format the linux partition and resize the windows partition to take all the 30 gigas of my HD? if i resize windows partition can i loose all the documentation in "my documents"? from the first time i reinstalled everything i discovered "my documents" was untouched. Still am gonna do back up of all my info on the laptopif i decide to keep linux and get it operational ? can you suggest me links about how still resize the linux partition? i want to reduce it to 5 gigas cuz 15 gigas its too much disk space wasted (specially if am not gonna store my main info there, i;ll do that in windows).

I'm terrible with computers and technical terms but I really need help. When I switched on my laptop I came across a userinit.exe application error asking me to terminate it. After that, all I saw was my wallpaper. No desktop, taskbar, nothing. I looked through about a million forums for help and managed to get back my desktop by running explorer.exe by task manager. Now I get the rundll32.exe application error! Basically now when I switch on my laptop I have to run explorer.exe and get pass the rundll32.exe error by clicking OK multiple times.I can't access anything on the control panel since all I get is the rundll.exe error. I have run a scan in my laptop using NOD32 [thats what I found!] and I found no threats.

I have a couple of problems, but I also have a possible solution and would like to have a bit of guidance as to whether or not I'm doing the right thing.
First of all, I will admit to making a couple of mistakes, first I have not backed up ANY data on my hard drive (actually I have 2 on my laptop) and secondly I lost my patience when laptop froze recently and just pulled the plug. Lessons learned!
OK, on booting up the laptop, I get the "We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start...blah blah" with the BSOD, which after disabling automatic restart, I could read. BTW none of the safe mode options work, the last known good config.

a friend has a Dell Dimension 4550 (P4-2Ghz, 60Gb HDD, 784mb RAM- added 512mb and a NEC DVD+/-R, circa 2002 I think?) and needs to do a clean install. He has the CD that came with it. We looked all over google and the Dell site and can't seem to find out how to do a clean install. We pressed F12 and tried to boot from the CD-ROM and thought it was going to work, but it said that we were trying to install XP on a partition that already had XP on it. I saw no option for full/clean restore.

When I start to use my Picasa program I have a continual pop up that says " The DLL "cpuinf32.dll" can not be loaded. OS reports: The specifdied module could not be fouind. Am no computeer whiz--so this is all "Greek" to me. What should I do to correct this?

What does end for support for a Windows mean?As far as I understand it means that updates (even critical) won't be available after that date. But how about a Service Pack. E.g. Windows XP SP2 deadline is set for 11 July 2010. Will Windows XP owners who have Windows XP SP2 version on a disc be able to successfully activate their copies of Windows after that date.

Here's a confirmation of something I believe M$ first announced some while back.
http://blogs.technet.com/lifecycle/a...installed.aspx
I think it's true to say XP - when maintained up-to-date - will continue in support until 2014.

I wanted to make this my special post, as its my 1000, and encourage all members to use their System Restore more, I keep a system restore icon on my desktop and make a restore point everyday, I know the computer is suppose to do it, but it makes me feel better, evertime I make drastic changes or questionable downloads I make a restore point, I simply type call it rp it only takes less than 10 seconds, if everyone did this we really could cut down on ourTech Support. Have a good day. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...w_03may19.mspx

So I decided to play Mabinogi again , a RPG game, installed my driver, downloaded Direct X 9.0 , but when I checked DXDIAG, the current version of direct x was still 8.1. I have a the Radeon X300/X550 series for my VGA. Is my VGA perhaps too old to support Direct X 9.0? Or can you show me how to overwrite 8.1 with 9.0.

I have been having an issue with Windows XP's Help & Support ever since I installed Service Pack 2; under the "Did you know?" section it's supposed to connect to the Internet and download new links, right? Well, it doesn't do that anymore.I did some Googling but failed to find anything helpful so far.I've been using the built-in personal firewall ever since installing SP2, which I'm guessing *may* have something to do with it.

I'm working on my Father In Laws' computer, and for some reason, we can't open his Help and Support Center. I have searched everywhere to find the right path to get to it, and no luck. It worked recently, but it's gone now. I have gone through the Services.msc looking for anything that may be disabled that would effect it, but nothing so far.

I would like to install East Asian language support on my XP Pro sp2 machine but I no longer have the original CD that I used to install the OS. I tried borrowing a friend's CD for XP Pro sp1 and the files seemed to install properly from the i386lang directory on the CD but the language functionality still does not work.Does anyone know if you can download the language pack from MS. Otherwise, it seems that I need the contents of the i386lang directory from an XP Pro sp2 CD, which I don't have.
