I was installing Norton Security and it locked up during install When I rebooted, Norton had changed all my files extensions from exe to lnk
As a result none of the programs or files work. After reading a lot, I tried to
restore my registry. Since Norton changed the files, any command in run does not work. I comes up with a dialog asking for a file association

I have checked it under Folder Options, I have tried setting it in my registry, I have increased BagMRU Size to 8000+, I have even tried silly batch files suggested through web page research and no matter what I do windows xp pro will never remember the setting after reboot and show the extensions. (119 files) I did not save the file at download but just ran the zip file and the extracted files opened in desktop. I deleted the files from my desktop and recycle bin. Every time I start/reboot, these 119 files continue to open, cluttering my desktop. I need the formula/pathway to follow to get to the destination in regedit.exe hkey_current_user start up folder with instructions on how to delete these extracted files so they will stop opening to my desktop at start.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAbout two day's ago I looked in the PF folder in my machine and as usual the PF's were .txt (except the Layout.ini, of course). But just now I happened to take a look at them and noticed that they have all changed to .pdf in some way. e.g. if I recall correctly an AVG Free file would be [something like] AVG75Free.txt but now it is AVG75FREE_516A1262.EXE-225B0AE9.pf and when I attempt to open it I get an error saying:Adobe Reader cannot open AVG75FREE_516A1262.EXE-225B0AE9.pf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example if was sent as an email attachment and hasn't correctly decoded).My default pdf reader is Foxit. And the proficiency with which files/programs are opened does not seem to have been retarded.I don't recall doing anything that I believe may have caused this. And the only thing I have downloaded since last looking in the PF folder is TweakUI. Could the cause simply be a matter of non-intelligent design?
System backups are of no help as I apparently deleted any such when I cleaned house yesterday. The closest I have come to fixing the problem is to change the file type in Folder Options to Text Document using the TXT file extension which places the Notepad icon on the PF files (even after restart) instead of the usual [plain] text doc icon. But the PF files are now otherwise building and opening properly. Is having the Notepad icon on the PF files a problem? Complete AVGFree a/s and AVGFree a/v scans with current updates indicate no problems. I am using XP Home SP2 with all critical updates.
It's been a while now that at windows startup, I always get a pop up from my norton antivirus 2005 saying that the config file is not installed.I have to give several ok in order to close definitively the window.After that, norton works fine.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't know how this happened. But when I went to my D drive which is My Documents, the drive was empty. Though when I check the drive properties it shows that 18G is being used, plus it's showing that the file system is RAW. Not sure how it got that way because it should be NTFS. I am able to view My Pictures and My Music by viewing from the start menu and going to My Pictures or My Music, but when I go to My Documents it's empty.
Now my question is how do I recover those missing files? I'm assuming that they are around because My Pictures and My Music are two of the files that are in my documents folder. This just leaves 25% of the drive I can't view. I can't do system restore because I don't have the D drive being monitored, so I can't do that. I did a virus scan and a spyware scan and the system is clean. Another thing I noticed is if I try to save something to the D drive it will appear to be the only item on the drive, but when I click refresh it will vanish.
I have three (3) questions:1. When I'm closing down Windows XP (Home Edition), I continually receive an error showing "XtkU.exe" cannot. I have checked everywhere and cannot find out what this file is associated with. In addition I have gone through my system and purged all files associated with this executable from the registry. They pop right back in there with a system restart. I'm lost and confused now because I don't know what application uses this file.2. When closing down I receive the same Norton error message another user gets."ccaps.exe" at signoff. I will try and remove Norton to see if that works. 3. The user "quick switch" does not work any longer. I am not sure what is causing that either. Do you think it may be associated with the WtkU file?

How does one change them back, when one doesn't know what opened them in the first place? Also I have some DOOZIES of virus/and or/spystuff. I searched my c drive and found many normal.dot file even when i delete it remains.
I am trialing drive encryption (TrueCrypt) and have created an encrypted D drive. I set my paging file to exist on the D drive so it is also encrypted and therefore safe and done the same with the temp directories.The problem is the screen goes all funny at boot time (splits into 4 sqiggly screens) and then comes up. It was unable to create the pagefile as there is not yet a d drive.
You have to use truecrypt to make the d drive by putting in the password, which makes sense since that's what keeps the data safe.The temp directories are used after the d drive becomes available but the pagefile.sys is not created or used that I can tell. This is a problem because either it means I have to keep the pagefile on the unencrypted C drive which is a security risk or I have to do without a pagefile entirely.
I changed from a dial-up connection to cable (Road Runner). Since then, my search engines have changed (when I search from the IE address bar, it uses MSN search now), and many pages that load, although faster, have the message "error on page" at the bottom. Outlook Express became my default email with the Road Runner email address, but most of the time it does not respond. Also, several games are slow to respond or do not respond at all (specifically CSI games and Hunting Unlimited). I run adaware and spybot at least once a week if not more, and defrag regularly. Are there extra precautions I should take with a cable connection?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI seem to be running into a similar situation as others. My .lnk extentions aren't working. I've run the 'fixes' for them as stated in other discussions. Everything appears to be fine when I look at my Desktop but when I double-click to open a link it still doesn't work.I can get into my programs by going into My Computer and finding the .exe and opening it that way. As soon as I do anything on my machine everything switches back to the way it was, not working. I go into regedit and under lnk the "lnkfile" never seems to stay. I keep running my antivirus and spyware programs such as Norton, Adware and Microsoft.

I want to remove this from the list. I tried running ShellExView but this particular program knows how to hide itself and does not show on the list (probably purposely designed by ACDSee). I like this feature and I do not want to disable it but I do want it to hide all files with a .bak extension. So I go into the folder and highlight all .bak files and hide them and it works perfectly but next time I build a drawings and it creates a .bak I can see it until I hide it again.

I couldn't get it to work to well. I've been using the MS backup utility. With this software it seems any new email causes changes my large Outlook PST file and the whole
file is backed up again. I've been trying to find backup software which will backup just the changed elements of the pst file and have tried downloading a trial version of
continuity@work from Mobiliti who claim to be able to just backup the changes to a PST file. I left continuity@work running overnight and had to stop it as it was only 50% through the backup this morning. It calls it synchronization rather than backup and from the error messages it seems that it doesn't create a shadow image before backing up as several files were not backed up as they were in use.
