Windows Can Search And Recommend Way Of Viewing Files With Unknown Extensions?
Jun 24, 2005
I've received a .brw file and don't know what to do with it. Is there a way windows can search and recommend a way of viewing files with unknown extensions? When I select the option to have microsoft find the extension on the web,it sends me to shell.microsoft.com and then says I am unauthorized to access this site.

Recently when i put on my canoscan gear to be able to scan some photos in ever since then my computer would not let me open any of my pictures or even view them as thumbnails with my windows picture and fax viewer, it lets me look at the BMP files in paint but it won't let me look at the JPG files in paint for some reason. Becuase my windows picture and fax viewer wasn't working i tried to suss out why and it said error loading C:WINDOWSSystem32shimgvw.dll, so from then i thought i just needed to get that shimgvw.dll file back in system32.

I am having trouble viewing JPG and GIF files on a particular web site(Expedia). I looked on the page for any description of possible issue with pictures and nothing. It does not make any sense why just these file extensions are not working on this site.

Anyone know how to set a default for viewing files and folders . . . , i.e., I'd like to set as a default, the only useful file/folder view XP offers, which is "details", such that everytime I open any file/folder from any storage,I see the file/folder details without having to take the extra 10 minutes to adjust it by hand.

is there a way in Windows XP to turned off searching in *.zip during the Search command? I search multiple network drives serveral times a day for files and do not need to search in the *.zip files. By searching the *.zip files the time is greatly increased. When I had Windows 2000 the search would take about 1 minute (did not search *.zip files) and now in Windows XP the search takes over 12 and half minutes (1079 *.zip files)
I did a test by making all the *.zip hidden and did the search again - averaged about 59 seconds. Unforunately, I have to leave the *.zip files as not hidden.
Any ideas?

I have Windows XP.My husband was on the computer and looking at something in google. When he was done and went back to our home page our windows search box was gone from our toolbar and in place of it at the top of the screen is a google search box which we don't like. I am computer illiterate when it comes to knowing what to do to get it back. This is the first time we have ever lost our search box.

A very minor nuisance I know, but my pop up blocker requires me to hold control every time I want to open a new window. Is there an effective, free pop up blocker that doesn't require this effort (I sit at a funny angle to the right of my keyboard with my feet up!)I currently use Pop Up Stopper which is otherwise very, very good.

I have spent some time googling, but not found anything yet.

For some reason tonight my computer decided that when I try to open a file by double clicking on a file icon, it brings up a search window with the little
wizard fellow. If I right click and open up the file that way, no problem. Just everytime I double click to open any file, I'm off to a search window with the subject of the search whatever file I was trying to open.

I am still getting used to Windows XP's search feature. With my old Windows 98, if I simply put ".jpeg" in the top search line (with Local Hard drive for my choice of "look in"), the results would be hundreds of .jpeg files. And when I try it with XP there are only 8 .jpeg files listed.when I know there are hundreds on my computer? I am looking for a picture that I know I have, but not sure where it is and I don't recall the name I had it listed as.I also tried searching for .ico files just to see if that worked and it did, however,It listed a lot of .ico files, but not all of them.

whenever I start my laptop two windows search boxes open. This is irritating and it may be linked to the (more irritating) fact that in the right-click dropdown shortcut menu thing, the top option is 'search' instead of explore or open, so double clicking opens a search box, but I don't know. How do I change all that? I'd be really grateful for any pointers.

This is a new problem to me. I'm familiar with XP's search not finding files that actually exist (particularly when searching for files containing the specification) but this time it's finding files that, as far as I can see, don't exist. And it's doing it when searching for a file specification. Yes, I have view hidden files turned on.The only clue I have is that the files that do exist show the full path, e.g. C:LnDevetc while the files that don't exist show the path as etc. Search In is set to LnDev. Since I'm sending the results to a third party simply ignoring the bogus files isn't an option. So far the only 'solution' I've found is to set up a Win2K machine & conduct the search on it. Win2K shows the correct results, WinXP doesn't (verified on 2 machines)
