View 6 Repliesis there a way in Windows XP to turned off searching in *.zip during the Search command? I search multiple network drives serveral times a day for files and do not need to search in the *.zip files. By searching the *.zip files the time is greatly increased. When I had Windows 2000 the search would take about 1 minute (did not search *.zip files) and now in Windows XP the search takes over 12 and half minutes (1079 *.zip files)
I did a test by making all the *.zip hidden and did the search again - averaged about 59 seconds. Unforunately, I have to leave the *.zip files as not hidden.
Any ideas?
I've received a .brw file and don't know what to do with it. Is there a way windows can search and recommend a way of viewing files with unknown extensions? When I select the option to have microsoft find the extension on the web,it sends me to shell.microsoft.com and then says I am unauthorized to access this site.

Microsoft Office Labs offers a helpful utility called Search Commands that brings search to the ribbon. Can’t find a specific feature? Just search for it!
Just download and install the Search Commands utility and you will have a new search tab in Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Search Companion now calls itself Search Results and does not offer to find Pictures, music, or video, Documents, etc. Also the animated assistant is not available nor is the change preferences option. I had a nasty virus attack and had to repair XP Pro. All else is repaired as far as I can tell, but this version of Search is not nearly as handy.

I am still getting used to Windows XP's search feature. With my old Windows 98, if I simply put ".jpeg" in the top search line (with Local Hard drive for my choice of "look in"), the results would be hundreds of .jpeg files. And when I try it with XP there are only 8 .jpeg files listed.when I know there are hundreds on my computer? I am looking for a picture that I know I have, but not sure where it is and I don't recall the name I had it listed as.I also tried searching for .ico files just to see if that worked and it did, however,It listed a lot of .ico files, but not all of them.

This is a new problem to me. I'm familiar with XP's search not finding files that actually exist (particularly when searching for files containing the specification) but this time it's finding files that, as far as I can see, don't exist. And it's doing it when searching for a file specification. Yes, I have view hidden files turned on.The only clue I have is that the files that do exist show the full path, e.g. C:LnDevetc while the files that don't exist show the path as etc. Search In is set to LnDev. Since I'm sending the results to a third party simply ignoring the bogus files isn't an option. So far the only 'solution' I've found is to set up a Win2K machine & conduct the search on it. Win2K shows the correct results, WinXP doesn't (verified on 2 machines)

View 8 Replies View Relatedwhenever I start my laptop two windows search boxes open. This is irritating and it may be linked to the (more irritating) fact that in the right-click dropdown shortcut menu thing, the top option is 'search' instead of explore or open, so double clicking opens a search box, but I don't know. How do I change all that? I'd be really grateful for any pointers.
