SEARCH Won't Work File Missing / File Required To Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found
May 5, 2005
I'm battling spyware removal at the moment (aurora) and somehow my win xp sp2 search function no longer works. i get an error "A File That Is Required to Run Search Companion Cannot Be Found" you may need to run setup I went to the microsoft website and downloaded the hotfix, however it doesn't work with sp2! anybody know how to fix this? I checked and i do have the srchasst folder in windows.
Whenever I try to use the Start|Search|For Files or Folders function of Windows XP, I get the following Error message box stating, "A file required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run Setup". (1) Does anyone have any idea what caused this problem? (2) What file is missing? (3) Can I fix it without having to run Setup?
I have WinXP Home - SP2. When i do a search in "Search Companion" and a list is shown in 'search results' is there then a way to save that list to a text file that can subsequently be printed out?
i have just gone to a search in the search link in the start menu and got a file missing message saying a file that is required to run search companian could not be found you may need to run set up
I have a user with the default settings for Search Companion. Last week, she noticed that it all of a sudden stopped working. Whenever she types in something to search and clicks on the Search button, IE sits there for a minute, and then comes back with the following error message: "Unable to connect The Web site is currently unavailable or the connection to the Internet has been lost. Make sure you are connected to the Internet and try again." The Search Companion doesn't work either if I run IE as the Administrator. For now, I have her using the Classic search, but she would like to use the Search Companion.
I am running Windows XP SP2 with Internet Explorer 6. Yahoo Search has replaced Search Companion and there is no preference button. There is a Customize button but it only brings up a pop-up page that says Ops wrong page. Try again Later. how I can Get the MSN Search Companion back.
My Search Companion now calls itself Search Results and does not offer to find Pictures, music, or video, Documents, etc. Also the animated assistant is not available nor is the change preferences option. I had a nasty virus attack and had to repair XP Pro. All else is repaired as far as I can tell, but this version of Search is not nearly as handy.
I tried to search for some files, and it didnt find any. So, I opened a folder and there were quite a few that it should have found.I tried several times, and double checked the directory and search options, and nothing worked. So, i tried a simpler search, and it found nothing, when it should easily have.
After doing an update on wxp he, we all of sudden have search companion of which for 3 yrs we didn't have! The update had nothing to do with it. My wife doesn't like it and wants it removed. I've gone thru the computer but can't find anyway to remove it as it doesn't appear to exist. I googled it and found this=• {Disable the Search companion to go back to the traditional search view: Start regedit, expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER and in Software – Microsoft – Windows – CurrentVersion – Explorer – CabinetState, set the value of Use Search Asst to "no"} but it's for wxp pro and isn't applicable for Home. I found an overview for it but nothing on how to uninstall it. It's called ms search companion. What it's doing is when we double click on a folder to open it, it brings up a search menue instead, whereas prior the folder would just open.
I am having an issue with the search companion crashing every time in XP w/sp2. I have re-installed the search driver and ran SFC /scannow but the search companion continues to crash. There is no adware/spyware on the machine any Ideas of a file that may have been damaged?
I've long made good use of the ability to search for files in my computer running Windows XP Professional by providing the Search Companion with "All or part of the file" or "A word or phrase in the file," but the Search Companion has suddenly begun behaving strangely. Sometimes when I run a search now it claims it found no files at all matching my criteria even though I know such files exist, and other times it lists some or all of the files it found multiple times (yes, with multiple listings of a single file within a single folder). And when it says it found results now, too, some of the files it lists appear in blue rather than the customary black.
how to add or delete msagent characters in the Window Search Companion feature? I presently have Merlin, Robby, Rover and Genie. I would like to delete a couple of them and add a couple of other msagent characters - Peedy and Oscar. I haven't found anywhere in the knowledge base of MS -
Not sure where to begin with this. I think I deleted a file I shouldn't have with the HJT log while I was cleaning up some spyware stuff. Anyone know how to help me get back my search command?
I am running XP SP2 with all current updates installed. Sometime after Windows Update performed an update, I noticed that when I try to run Search (Start, Search), the search app freezes after I type in the file search criteria and click the "search" button". Attempting to close the application results in "this program not responding." and ultimately "You chose to end the nonreponsive program, Windows Explorer." Please Tell Microsoft about this problem. We have created an error report... [Send Error Report] [Don't Send] This is identical to a problem reported on 3/1/2005 but doesn't appear to have a resolution.
I have windows XP professional SP2 - cannot use search file facility - comes up with error report to send to Microsoft - also now cannot use my camera software - error report comes up (have uninstalled and reinstalled but same error message to send to Microsoft)
How is this possible? I know there are ways through GPO but is there any other way to disable Windows File Searching? A user requested to "DISABLE FILE SEARCH SO IT DOESN'T RECORD A HISTORY".
I seem to have done something that has knocked out my Start Search (or was it start find) function. when I click on start search, I get a kind of disabled Internet Explorer box instead of the familiar search options with the usual buttons for location, file name, etc. This seems to have happened shortly after I got rid of the animated character and did a lot of other XP performance tweaks. I did turn the indexing service off but turned it back on and that did not help
Can I Delete contents of search file.I Did a file search and it came back with 58,519 files. Most files are system32, common files, diff. program file, Adobe, Symantec, Quicktime I386modem.cab? what the hell is that And TONS of preload files...and WINME files there are more than that but i think you get the point.
The windows Explorer search feature works well enough for most file searches except when looking for files on a disc. On those occasions, the In Folder results point not to the disc drive but to c:documents & settings[name]Local Settings Applications Data. In short, not to where the files are. To add insult to fubar, clicking on any folder in the list results in -- absolutely nothing because I am clicking on a phantom folder (duh). I know that if I scroll across to the right, miles outside the screen view, I'll finally see where the file in question actually resides -- major and unappreciated pain. Is there a config or reg edit somewhere that will allow me to set the In Folder to show the file where it actually is, referencing the disc drive, instead of the above c:. If not, at the very least, I think Microsoft should share some of what the Einstein was smoking the day he came up with this one.
This is a new problem to me. I'm familiar with XP's search not finding files that actually exist (particularly when searching for files containing the specification) but this time it's finding files that, as far as I can see, don't exist. And it's doing it when searching for a file specification. Yes, I have view hidden files turned on.The only clue I have is that the files that do exist show the full path, e.g. C:LnDevetc while the files that don't exist show the path as etc. Search In is set to LnDev. Since I'm sending the results to a third party simply ignoring the bogus files isn't an option. So far the only 'solution' I've found is to set up a Win2K machine & conduct the search on it. Win2K shows the correct results, WinXP doesn't (verified on 2 machines)
The new interface in Office 2007 has a great new look but finding your favorite feature can be a little difficult at first. Microsoft Office Labs offers a helpful utility called Search Commands that brings search to the ribbon. Can’t find a specific feature? Just search for it!
Just download and install the Search Commands utility and you will have a new search tab in Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
Download Search Commands from Microsoft Office Labs
my computer was infected. I used to able to do a search from the address bar, but now I'm hyjacked to some sort of porno search engine.I use spybot, zone alarm,AVG, webroot. I've tryied using Hyjack this program in atempt to find problem.Still suffering!!! Any suggestions ?
What are the rules for a case sensitive search when searching for all files and folders in XP. I have set the option, and have tried searching in both upper and lower case options, and still get the same results.
I have windows xp. My search engines will not pull up any links; i have tried many different ones and none of them will work (google, yahoo, ask, etc..)It doesn't pull up an error message either. It is just a blank page. Also everytime I try to shop online, it will not allow me to go any farther than viewing a picture of an item. it will not let me add it to a cart or buy anything.
The search box comes up on the left side as it should but the box is empty and all you see is the dog. What happened to the interface. This occurred after having a virus cleaned from the computer. Also lost a sku011.cab file which has been restored but has not corrected this problem only the Excel problem.
I have a 500MB CPU with 256 MB memory on a Etower machine. I am running xp home edition and I can not longer get the search feature to work. If I try and search for anything at all I always get the same thing > "Search is complete, no results to display" I get this no matter what I put in the search box or how I change the search criteria. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Also I can no longer get Msconfig to open using the "Start/Run/open" Box. I can go to the Icon within explorer itself and open the program, so the program still works but, for some reason like I just said Msconfig will not open using the start/run/open box.
Going to START/Search button then adding parameters to close up search such as choosing "Case Sensitive" DOES NOT WORK. When I pressed Go for the search, all kinds of files popped up in the search such as Realization.doc, Capitalization.xls, anything that had the letters liz in it when I had typed in the "File and Folder" box Liz (Capital L lowercase iz) and then a space after the z. I have files named Liz(space).this and Liz(space). that, and that's what I was searching for. But files still appeared that had lowercase liz in the middle of a word like Capitalization. So what's the point of having a Case Sensitive box to check, when it doesn't work! Am I doing something wrong here?
is there a way in Windows XP to turned off searching in *.zip during the Search command? I search multiple network drives serveral times a day for files and do not need to search in the *.zip files. By searching the *.zip files the time is greatly increased. When I had Windows 2000 the search would take about 1 minute (did not search *.zip files) and now in Windows XP the search takes over 12 and half minutes (1079 *.zip files) I did a test by making all the *.zip hidden and did the search again - averaged about 59 seconds. Unforunately, I have to leave the *.zip files as not hidden. Any ideas?
I read the advice to start in safe mode to delete files that gave the errror message cannot delet file - source file not found. They wouldn't delete in Safe Mode either. I am trying to delete mp3 from my c drive because I have an external disk where I have my music library. I can delete them one at a time without getting the error message but not a bunch of them. Some of them I have been able to delete in a bunch.
