solution for hiding file extensions for known file types... even after reboot? I know nobody likes to hide them, but I do and I have tried EVERYTHING! I have checked it under Folder Options, I have tried setting it in my registry, I have increased BagMRU Size to 8000+, I have even tried silly batch files suggested through web page research and no matter what I do windows xp pro will never remember the setting after reboot and show the extensions. Is there anyway to fix this annoying problem so what I set in folder options or in my registry remains as I have set it after reboot.

I was installing Norton Security and it locked up during install When I rebooted, Norton had changed all my files extensions from exe to lnk
As a result none of the programs or files work. After reading a lot, I tried to
restore my registry. Since Norton changed the files, any command in run does not work. I comes up with a dialog asking for a file association

Go to control panel, folder options. Click on the File Types tab. Scroll to the file extensions you want to change and click change. Select the program you want. But it will not let me apply it as the apply button is grayed out.

Ever wonder where you file extensions went? Working with files when you can not tell what the file extension can be a huge pain in the butt. MS has made it possible for all file names with the extensions to be shown.in any folder that contains files. Click on the tools menu and select folder options. Then click on the view tab. Locate where it lists Hide extensions of known file types and uncheck it

I downloaded microsoft frontpage extensions resource zip file and accidentally sent the extracted files to desktop. (119 files) I did not save the file at download but just ran the zip file and the extracted files opened in desktop. I deleted the files from my desktop and recycle bin. Every time I start/reboot, these 119 files continue to open, cluttering my desktop. I need the formula/pathway to follow to get to the destination in regedit.exe hkey_current_user start up folder with instructions on how to delete these extracted files so they will stop opening to my desktop at start.

I have 3 computers. One running VistaRC1, One running Windows Server 2003 and one running Windows XP Pro.I'm trying to network the 3 of them and just attach a keyboard, mouse and monitor to the Vista machine.My question relates to the fact that Server 2003 machine will not startup completely without a keyboard and mouse attached to it (I'm not sure yet, but I think the same is true of the XP machine.)Is there a way to configure either the operating system or the BIOS to allow the Server 2003 and XP machines to completely startup without having either a keyboard, mouse (and monitor) attached to them?

I had a virus on a file so I deleted it. Now when my computer starts up it keeps looking for the file. I just click "ok" and my computer works fine, but its just annoying that the message loads and my computer won't completely start up till I hit ok. Here is the message:
"Drive or network connection that the shortcut "autostart.ir.lnk" refers to is unavaliable. Make sure the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is avaliable and try again"

The procedure is as follows:
Right-click databases -> Restore Database
I mark 'from device', click the '...' button & select 'File' in the dropdown, then brows to the file itself. Under 'select the backup sets to restore' I check the only checkbox there, then in the 'To Database' I select the name of the database in the file (a new DB name appears there as you select the file).

XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it

I seem to be running into a similar situation as others. My .lnk extentions aren't working. I've run the 'fixes' for them as stated in other discussions. Everything appears to be fine when I look at my Desktop but when I double-click to open a link it still doesn't work.I can get into my programs by going into My Computer and finding the .exe and opening it that way. As soon as I do anything on my machine everything switches back to the way it was, not working. I go into regedit and under lnk the "lnkfile" never seems to stay. I keep running my antivirus and spyware programs such as Norton, Adware and Microsoft.

I have ACDSee installed on my XP Pro computer. Everytime I right-click on a file (any file, for that matter), one of the choices is "Browse with ACDSee". I want to remove this from the list. I tried running ShellExView but this particular program knows how to hide itself and does not show on the list (probably purposely designed by ACDSee). Anyone know an easy way to remove this annoying shell extension?
