I seem to be running into a similar situation as others. My .lnk extentions aren't working. I've run the 'fixes' for them as stated in other discussions. Everything appears to be fine when I look at my Desktop but when I double-click to open a link it still doesn't work.I can get into my programs by going into My Computer and finding the .exe and opening it that way. As soon as I do anything on my machine everything switches back to the way it was, not working. I go into regedit and under lnk the "lnkfile" never seems to stay. I keep running my antivirus and spyware programs such as Norton, Adware and Microsoft.
I have ACDSee installed on my XP Pro computer. Everytime I right-click on a file (any file, for that matter), one of the choices is "Browse with ACDSee". I want to remove this from the list. I tried running ShellExView but this particular program knows how to hide itself and does not show on the list (probably purposely designed by ACDSee). Anyone know an easy way to remove this annoying shell extension?
I am a drafter and I use autocad alot. When you build an autocad drawing it automatically save a backup file (e.g. dwgname.bak). I like this feature and I do not want to disable it but I do want it to hide all files with a .bak extension. So I go into the folder and highlight all .bak files and hide them and it works perfectly but next time I build a drawings and it creates a .bak I can see it until I hide it again.
In Ubuntu and Vista, the filetype extension is shown when you press F2, only the file name, without the extension, is renamed by default. In XP, you can pick just one or the other, by default. Is there a hack to allow both to happen at the same time?
How do I block certain file extensions from starting up. Lets say that I didnt want anybody on the accounting GPO fropm starting a file with a *.BMP extension?
Go to control panel, folder options. Click on the File Types tab. Scroll to the file extensions you want to change and click change. Select the program you want. But it will not let me apply it as the apply button is grayed out.
Ever wonder where you file extensions went? Working with files when you can not tell what the file extension can be a huge pain in the butt. MS has made it possible for all file names with the extensions to be shown.in any folder that contains files. Click on the tools menu and select folder options. Then click on the view tab. Locate where it lists Hide extensions of known file types and uncheck it
I've received a .brw file and don't know what to do with it. Is there a way windows can search and recommend a way of viewing files with unknown extensions? When I select the option to have microsoft find the extension on the web,it sends me to shell.microsoft.com and then says I am unauthorized to access this site.
I recently removed all of my file extensions with my Registry Cleaner, now I can't access anything except my browser and Email program.I was trying to clean stuff off of my computer I didn't need I just got a little carried away.I have a backup of the files on my Registry Cleaner but I can't access it,what can I do?Is there any other way to gain access to my Registry Cleaner where I can get to the backup? When I say I removed all of my file extensions I mean every single one.
I downloaded microsoft frontpage extensions resource zip file and accidentally sent the extracted files to desktop. (119 files) I did not save the file at download but just ran the zip file and the extracted files opened in desktop. I deleted the files from my desktop and recycle bin. Every time I start/reboot, these 119 files continue to open, cluttering my desktop. I need the formula/pathway to follow to get to the destination in regedit.exe hkey_current_user start up folder with instructions on how to delete these extracted files so they will stop opening to my desktop at start.
i have 1 desktop and 1 laptop. The laptop shows file extensions at the end of every file, but the desktop doesnt. I was wondering how i can make the desktop show them?
solution for hiding file extensions for known file types... even after reboot? I know nobody likes to hide them, but I do and I have tried EVERYTHING! I have checked it under Folder Options, I have tried setting it in my registry, I have increased BagMRU Size to 8000+, I have even tried silly batch files suggested through web page research and no matter what I do windows xp pro will never remember the setting after reboot and show the extensions. Is there anyway to fix this annoying problem so what I set in folder options or in my registry remains as I have set it after reboot.
Today I noticed that there are various file extensions on many of my files. For example my text documents are now .txt, log files are now .log and so forth. Is there anyway I can get rid of the extensions without rendering the file unopenable?
Whenever I start up IE7 "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" pops up. The problem is my internet is working for SOME programs. Firefox is working fine, but IE7 is not. Also Steam, Ventrilo, and AIM work fine, but programs such as, UBI Internet, and Gas Powered Games Internet, and almost all games do not work. It says Winsock error problem, but I have fixed the registry keys and followed all instructions.
I have a Gateway CX2618, w/ windows XP tablet edition 2005 version 2002, sp2. And wanted to wipe it clean and reinstall just the things I use. Plus my Tablet side of things hasn't worked in a long time and I was hoping the clean install would fix that. But my recovery DVD isn't working (could be user error). I DO have apps that I need to keep and I think I've backed them up to my external HD correctly.
I just recently reinstalled Windows XP on my computer, my USB keyboard is working fine, but my mouse is not working, I tried it in all the USB ports for it and I am getting no response, I am getting a curser on screen but no movement nor am I able to click.
I de-infected a windows XP system with SP3 and IE7. Once I did that, http no longer loaded in IE. It does not work in portable firefox either. I can type in ftp:// ftp address and IE works. Likewise I can use https:// and the page loads! What is going on: I tried:
1) Reset ie7 as per MS 2) Removed IE 7 2a) IE6 would not load http either 3) reapplied SP3 4) Repair install win winxp cd. 5) Deleted and re-installed network card
This is where I am now. Still no http://. Since multiple applications are affected, I do not think it is a browser helper.

I recently moved from Minnesota to Texas and when I powered up the computer here, my CD drive no longer shows up in My Computer.. I have a dual-boot system (win 98SE and XP Pro)..It was working before the move.. It also works fine on Win98SE.. When using XP Pro, looking at hardware profiles it says the driver's are installed, but it can't find hardware.. I've tried deleting it there and rebooting and it finds new hardware, but still says it can't see it.. I've already tried a different CD drive with the same results (works on 98SE but not on XP Pro.

The number of servers and workstation I am managing is slowly but steadily growing. Soon it will be more than I can handle. I've read quite a bit on how to manage small to medium sized networks, and I've seen several references to SMS from Microsoft.Do any of you guys or gals know the basics of how the System Management Server works? Currently my network consists of: 2 firewalls/gateways, 1 domain controller, 1 web server, 1 ftp server, 1 NAS array, 6 IP-addressable volume printers, and 6 standard workstations.Granted, this isn't exactly a monster network, but since I'm a one-man show, I need all the automation I can get.
My computer has stopped working all of a sudden. It does not even start when he turns it on. It was working perfectly the night before and when he turned it on the next morning, it just did not start. He says that it never gave any warnings or error messages and this was the first time. Could this be due to the power cord or the power supply?
