My printer is networked from my pc to my laptop but all of a sudden it is no longer printing from the laptop. The pc is saying the "server service is not starting Error 87" parameter incorrect whenI try to start it. Also the computer browser is disabled and I am unable to start it.I am not very technical so any instructions need to be fairly straightforward please.
View 11 Repliesmy computer doesnot connect to the internet ( "sometimes "). I installesd a new network card and still the problem persist. I use a DSL. I've been researching online and I think it might be the Computer Browser located in Administrative Tools > Services.
In column Startup Type it says Automatically but in column Status it has nonthing. So I tried to restart it but it gives me a error message. This what it says:
"The computer Browser Services on local computer started and then stopped some services stop automatically if they have no work to do. For example; Performance logs and alert services"
What should I do to resovle this problem?
How do I block certain file extensions from starting up. Lets say that I didnt want anybody on the accounting GPO fropm starting a file with a *.BMP extension?

One running VistaRC1, One running Windows Server 2003 and one running Windows XP Pro.I'm trying to network the 3 of them and just attach a keyboard, mouse and monitor to the Vista machine.My question relates to the fact that Server 2003 machine will not startup completely without a keyboard and mouse attached to it (I'm not sure yet, but I think the same is true of the XP machine.)Is there a way to configure either the operating system or the BIOS to allow the Server 2003 and XP machines to completely startup without having either a keyboard, mouse (and monitor) attached to them?

The machine is for personal use and does not support a site nor other constant 2 way use to web. It does occasionally share it's cable router with a laptop (mostly just to update protectors on laptop).Would stopping this service help speed up machine? Would it cause any harm or malfunction (are there other items this non-server usage needs that are dependent)?

Saw on an earlier thread this may be related to the DCOM service, but this won't start either.Have run a Hijack this log and there's nothing to report there, system restore doen't work because it's one of the many auto start services that don't start along with windows installer. The link below shows a conversation with a guy who has the same problem as me only he had to rsolve his via a re-install. Don't mind doing this if that's what's needed, just would love to be able to fix it!

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn the default installation of XP, the Messenger service runs by default. Messenger in Windows 2000/XP is similiar to the functionality of what "WinPopup" was to Win3.x/9X. However, having this service running will cause problems in the very near future, as ANYONE can send popup messages to your computer when you have this service running. (The service doesn't check where the message comes from). Don't believe it? At the command prompt, type "net send IPADDRESS_OF_CLIENT_TO_SEND_TO Your Message" and that person will get a popup window immediately with "Your Message" .. the popup window will says "Messenger Service" in the titlebar and will contain your workstation's name and the time. You can send a message to yourself by typing "LOCALHOST" to test this.Another thing worth noting, if you are using a Microsoft firewall, these messages will still be sent through the firewall.To make it so others cannot send these messages to you, disable the Messenger service from Services. (Go to Control Panel > Perf. & Maint. > Administrative Tools > Services. Double click the Messenger Service, change 'Automatic' to 'Disabled' and click the Stop button.) Once you've done this, people trying to send messages via the net message service will get errors. While you're at it, it might be wise to disable the 'Administrative Alerts' service as well.The description Microsoft gives for this service is as follows: "Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start."

Boot the laptop, a few services start (see first listed Info event), then nothing for 15 minutes, at which time the error is logged, then the Server service starts, and all is well.During that 15 minutes, the taskbar, Start menu, etc are all unavialable--the hourglass is in effect.I've tried the netsh ip int reset command, also the winsock reset command,without effect.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI didn't want sp2, but my computer decided to install it for me anyway when it did the last automatic updates two days ago. When it told me to restart the computer, I did, and now it will not start. It goes into a boot loop and just goes on and off and on and off. I called Microsoft and they cannot help me, because I do not have an official XP disk, it came installed on my computer (Systemax). If I had a disk they said it would be easy. They told me to call Systemax. I did, but I have had the computer longer than a year, so the free tech support is over and now it is $40/half hour to get help.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a problem. Quite recently I was using the msconfig to manage startup programs and services. I had to temporarily diasble all start up programs, and right after (no restart) i went to the services tab. I wanted to check the "hide all ms services" but accidentally i clicked on "disable all services." msconfig froze, so ended it and started it again. I went on the service tab and most of the services were gone (all essential & virusscan stayed).
Then I restarted it, and windows asked me to reactivate my account. I cliked on (do it through internet" and tried it. It didnt work. It said that there was no internet. I clicked on "remind me later" and the desktop loaded. My theme is now the classic theme! so i tried to change the theme and the the "blue/silver/olive" themes weren't there. So then i went to the help topics and it said "please run the help service" i did not know what this meant. So i thought that i should do system restore, but i couldn't! There was only one save point, and that was from when i just accessed system restore during this situation.
How can I disable the windows service that prompts me when an executable file is from any unknown publisher? The attached image is a screen shot of the security warning. I don't care about any of the associated risks with disabling this, I've already disabled the windows firewall and security center, I just find this pop-up quite aggravating and would like to know how to make it stop

Firefox, I have tried setting it as my default browser in the settings option, and in "Set programs access and defaults". It works quite well... But can I get MSN Messenger to open up in that browser? When I click on my e-mails or MSN Space Etc. It opens up in Internet Explorer. Is there ANY way to open it in my default browser?

I mark 'from device', click the '...' button & select 'File' in the dropdown, then brows to the file itself. Under 'select the backup sets to restore' I check the only checkbox there, then in the 'To Database' I select the name of the database in the file (a new DB name appears there as you select the file).
XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it

When I open Internet Explorer, my home page (www.google.com) opens.When it is finished loading, it automatically redirets to yahoo mail login page. The catch is, all my browsers windows that are open will be changed too. If I hit "stop" before the page is loaded, then hit "refresh", this action does not occur. I have Microsoft updates automatically downloade do my computer. I have the latest MacAfee anti-virus on my computer and have run the latest scan. I have run Microsoft beta spy-ware, ad aware and yahoo's version. I am not seeing anything.

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. Is there some way of having resilience in this scenario? Perhaps a second Licensing server or something, the way you have 2 or more Domain Controllers?
I have Windows XP and MS Office XP (2003) loaded on my PC. Whenever I boot up the PC, 3 sessions of MS Word open - 2 sessions have a new (blank) document open, and the 3rd session just shows Word as being open (no new document).I went to Documents and Settings | Application Data | Microsoft | Word | Startup to see if there was anything in the folder prompting Word to open the 3 sessions. The folder was empty. I then clicked Start | Run | msconfig | Enter to see if Winword.exe is in the Startup folder. I thought I might see it in there 3 times – one for each of the Word sessions that are opening whenever I boot up the PC. Strangely enough, Winword.exe wasn’t in the Startup folder at all – not even once.

View 9 Replies View RelatedFor about 2 months my computer (Sony VAIO desktop, Pentium IV 1.39 mHz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP Pro, SP2) has been acting strange. I have checked the system for viruses and spyware with AVG and Symmantec and others- with no luck. I also did a Windows repair; it only got worse. I also used reg scrub.First, when starting up it gets hung up at "Windows starting up..." taking about 3 minutes to finally get to the user selection page. Once I login, it takes another 2minutes to fully open up. At that point, my mouse has a constant flicker and takes forever to open up IE (6.0). If I leave the computer for awhile, when I come back and move my mouse to wake it up- it has some new problems: I cannot type in numbers (num lock has no effect), when I type letters, they are in all caps (caps lock off), and when I go to my desktop to select a program to start, it highlights all of the icons and says basically "do you really want to start 38 programs at once".

My question is, does uninstalling sp3 remove sp2 as well. I can not see sp2 under add/remove programs, but my windows update history says I downloaded sp2 last May.

Browsing seemed to go quicker and smoother. This morning, however, I got a MS Windows message concerning "possible" trouble with my browser. It recommended examining my add-ons in IE. I don't have sufficient knowledge to recognize what I should and shouldn't have or, more appropriately, what may be harmful here. I know that those "RealPlayer" programs are invasive so when I saw that listed, I disabled it.
View 23 Replies View RelatedI recently reformatted and installed Windows XP Home fresh on both my desktop and laptop. All worked fine even after getting updated until the last update on each. On the desktop it included Service pack 2 update but not on the laptop, it was a new update but still has only service pack 1. On each computer the browsers both IE6 and foxfire started running very slow. IT would take many seconds to get new pages open. On the laptop I restored and IE6 works fine but I am still having a problem with Foxfire and it also received a Foxfire update. Any idea how to fix this problem without restoring and losing the needed update? I have run XP on both systems for a good while and never had this problem.
