Have a XP Home PC here, and a number of services are not starting including the RPC service. Saw on an earlier thread this may be related to the DCOM service, but this won't start either.Have run a Hijack this log and there's nothing to report there, system restore doen't work because it's one of the many auto start services that don't start along with windows installer. The link below shows a conversation with a guy who has the same problem as me only he had to rsolve his via a re-install. Don't mind doing this if that's what's needed, just would love to be able to fix it!
I didn't want sp2, but my computer decided to install it for me anyway when it did the last automatic updates two days ago. When it told me to restart the computer, I did, and now it will not start. It goes into a boot loop and just goes on and off and on and off. I called Microsoft and they cannot help me, because I do not have an official XP disk, it came installed on my computer (Systemax). If I had a disk they said it would be easy. They told me to call Systemax. I did, but I have had the computer longer than a year, so the free tech support is over and now it is $40/half hour to get help.
My printer is networked from my pc to my laptop but all of a sudden it is no longer printing from the laptop. The pc is saying the "server service is not starting Error 87" parameter incorrect whenI try to start it. Also the computer browser is disabled and I am unable to start it.I am not very technical so any instructions need to be fairly straightforward please.
To install the free version of AVG on Windows XP and keep getting the message. Error: Action failed for file avgmfx86.sys: starting service. Error 0x80070002
I have Windows XP and MS Office XP (2003) loaded on my PC. Whenever I boot up the PC, 3 sessions of MS Word open - 2 sessions have a new (blank) document open, and the 3rd session just shows Word as being open (no new document).I went to Documents and Settings | Application Data | Microsoft | Word | Startup to see if there was anything in the folder prompting Word to open the 3 sessions. The folder was empty. I then clicked Start | Run | msconfig | Enter to see if Winword.exe is in the Startup folder. I thought I might see it in there 3 times – one for each of the Word sessions that are opening whenever I boot up the PC. Strangely enough, Winword.exe wasn’t in the Startup folder at all – not even once.
I have had Windows XP on my computer for 3 years, during that time I have had no problems with updates. A couple of days ago updates were running when I got the following message box. Service pack 3 setup. Access denied1! Microsoft will now un-install the current updates. At this point I was in a hurry to leave and shut off my computer thinking that when I started up again, the updates would resume their activity.......
For about 2 months my computer (Sony VAIO desktop, Pentium IV 1.39 mHz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP Pro, SP2) has been acting strange. I have checked the system for viruses and spyware with AVG and Symmantec and others- with no luck. I also did a Windows repair; it only got worse. I also used reg scrub.First, when starting up it gets hung up at "Windows starting up..." taking about 3 minutes to finally get to the user selection page. Once I login, it takes another 2minutes to fully open up. At that point, my mouse has a constant flicker and takes forever to open up IE (6.0). If I leave the computer for awhile, when I come back and move my mouse to wake it up- it has some new problems: I cannot type in numbers (num lock has no effect), when I type letters, they are in all caps (caps lock off), and when I go to my desktop to select a program to start, it highlights all of the icons and says basically "do you really want to start 38 programs at once".
1) I have seen this problem posted on another forum in the past, but the thread never led to a solution.2) This problem has occurred with both a EIDE hard drive and a USB camera. I have also seen reports of it happening with other drives. (NOTE: the items I am referring to use native WIN XP drivers; I have posted this problem on other forums and the first responder always tells me to go to the manufactrer's site to download the latest drivers.)3) The problem: every time I reboot, the Hardware installation wizard reports the following: "The specified service does not exist as an installed service."4) Once this dialog box is closed, the yellow warning diamond appears nect to the device in hardware manager, and the driver "disk.sys" is NOT installed, although "partmgr.sys" is.
I have started to get the following message coming up when my machine is booting up: Control Service. The requested control is not valid for this service.Has anybody else experienced this? I am using a Notepad with WXP Pro SP2.
Once I installed sp3, I could not get past the windows loading screen, so I started in safemode and uninstalled sp3 that way. My question is, does uninstalling sp3 remove sp2 as well. I can not see sp2 under add/remove programs, but my windows update history says I downloaded sp2 last May.
I recently downloaded a program, now I'm getting pop ups which I never really had before I ran Adaware & spybot.can someone check my hijack this log and advise me if something should be removed?
Today I did an update on my norton security 2005 and updated my ewido suite. After I updated both of them I restarted my computer in safe mode so that I could run ewido because for some reason I was getting a notification that I had a keylogger on my computer. I kept blocking it but it kept coming back. This is the first time anything like that has ever been on my computer. I put a 56k modem and aol on it because I moved and I dont have cable modem here and thats when I started to have problems with my comp. Well, when my computer went to start back up it froze, so I manually restarted it. When it started back up it came to the screen asking to start up in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command line, last known working conditions, and normal start up. I tried to start in safe but it started loaded everything and froze up while it was doing its check. It did the same thing in all the safe modes. So I tried it in the last known working option and it went to the Windows XP black loading screen and finished loading then turned to an all black page and froze up again. I tried doing it in normal startup mode and it froze up again after the Windows XP loading screen. It froze on the all black screen again. So, now it wont get any further then that screen. I took out the 56k modem and tried and it still didnt work. Everything seems to be running in the computer. Its not hot. I have not downloaded anything on my computer if a few months. I havent even open any attactments in emails in a few months. Oh yeah I cant get a HJT log or anything since it wont start up in any open. I have windows xp pro sp2..
I have tried looking through this site, without luck to fix this. on a Dell OptiPlex GX1 running XP, this computer is starting up by itself, is this a schedule problem, power managment, or bios or something else?? sorry not a virus, have done housecall, plus have nortons on it, had another computer do it, never worked out the problem, didn't believe it till I was sitting beside it and it started by itself.
I have a used computer that will not boot up it has windows XP but nothing happens it boots saying error "pocessor disabled" then it trys to boot then it just resets itself any ideas the bios also has some password on it that I cannot figure out
When I started the computer everything seamed to start except my LCD monitor was not getting a signal from the computer the screen was black. After trying a couple of times I hooked up an older 15" monitor. I seemed to get a signal in the beginning but after minutes the screen was black. I booted the computer again in Safe Mode and the computer booted OK. I tryed Safe Mode a few times and it booted OK each time.
How to launch the windows desktop without going through the user select page. I know that it is just a matter of customizing the way i log on but i can't remember how it's done.
I recently increased my virtual memory and after that my pc is not starting properly and i have to choose last known good configuration for starting it
Just now, my toshiba satellite a105-s4342 laptop was installing a bios driver from toshiba drivers website. During installation, my computer froze, for like 10 mins, then I rebooted and the computer just stayed black. Nothing is loading in the background, I know that for sure. I tried using the Recovery and Applications/Drivers disc but it only works after you load the bios screen.
Every time my computer starts up it goes to the desktop and it re-starts it self. im running it in safe mode rite now and it seems to be working fine. how can i fix this??
My wifes computer runs WinXP pro w/sp2, the computer boots up fine but when windows starts the winXP logo is all misconfigured, and it takes about 15 - 30 minutes for windows the completely start. The logo screen will look different each time windows is started. I will try to recreate the screen. This is a crude recreation of the display.I have gone as far as doing a complete format and clean install of WinXP and other programs. I still get the same thing! Could it be a faulty video card? (this one is integrated in MB). the MB is an ASUS A7N266.I will try using a spare video card to ruleout that possibility. If it is not a graphics issue what else? CPU, or MB. I saved many files to a USB drive I use for backups, is it possible for a boot sector virus to reside in the My Documents folder?I kept Norton AV, SpyBot SD, and AdAware upto date and tried to run scans frequently; however, these my not catch everything.
I was using my comp yesterday and the right & left click functions of the mouse stopped working in IE. They worked fine on the task bar. I rebooted and it took almost 15 minutes to come back up. CPU usage is at 100% all the time. Needless to say it barely runs it's so slow but everything seems to work. I rebooted into safe mode and cpu usage is normal but I can't seem to find the hang. I also ran msconfig and disabled all the startup items and service items, XP seems to start. things occur normally up to the splash screen, but just after that is where it hangs.
All you people that hate that ICQ reconfigures the startingpage in IE to there homepage. Here is the solution.Click on the start button, then click on run.Type regedit and press enter.Browse to this point in the register: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMirabilisICQDefaultPrefsBrowserPage.There you will find a string called Explorer.Double click on it and enter whatever homepage adress you want.Thats it, icq will never change your starting adress again.
a friend of mine called with a pc problem. he was given a computer, i believe a pentium 4, i haven't been over yet so i'm not sure exactly whats going on.evidently it was working fine but has been sitting for a while. he knows practically nothing about computers. the problem is all the junk that is on it. it has win xp, but he doesn't have any discs to reformat. i told him it would be best to wipe the harddrive clean and start over but how does he do that or clean up the existing mess. it appears hes got some spyware, bugs and junk because he says stuff keeps popping up, duplicating itself etc. he just had dsl installed through bell south and now he's kind of stuck so he called me
Yesterday I started getting a bunch of corrupt file messages while running XP pro S2. I was told to run chkdsk each time. Then the computer just started re-starting it's self over and over again. Sometimes after being on for 5 minutes sometimes 30. I re-installed windows deleting the old partions and starting from scratch with a full format. The mystery shut downs have disappeared but I have a new set of problems. I get the odd corrupt file message but I can;t seem to install ome programs. Office will not install for me. it keeps asking me to find different missing dll files which are clearly on the cd. i tried copying the files to a hard drive and pointing setup to thembut that didn't work either. i have two cd drives and it is does it on both. My power supply is fine.
Windows shuts off,As if it has no power, windows does not shut down. But it restarts even with out being prompted to. At times when it happened say 3 times with timing of about 30 minutes or so. My screen does not start up when windows turns on(start up). Please if any one has a solution or probaple cause I would really like to know. The windows troubleshooter for shutting down or start up problems does not give the symptoms for my pc.
Every time I try to download SP2 computer restarts during the installation, specifically when its making backup files. I got this error signature after the computer rebooted I have a Widows XP Home edition.

ANYBODY OUT THERE KNOW HOW TO UPGRADE MY WINDOWS XP,PRO(SP1)-TO WINDOWS XP,PRO(SP2)- I,JUST NEED TO UPGRADE. I DON`T WANT TO LOSE ANY OF MY UTILITIES OR PROGRAMS THAT CAME WITH MY COMPUTER. IF ANYONE KNOWS WHERE TO GO, AND WHAT TO DO
Every time I go to boot my computer it won't boot up it goes to a screen that gives me 3 or 4 options like Safe Mode or Last known good configuration I have to select these choices about 10 times before it finally starts up.
I push in the start button to turn on the computer, It runs for about a second or two, then shuts off. No blue screens, no nothing. Shuts off before the monitor can come on. If you try for a few times, holding it in for a second or two, sometimes it will work right away and sometimes it takes 3 to 4 tries. No virus or trojan, ran everything under the sun for checks, Nothing shows in device manager as a problem. I have windows XP home and a HP computer. I get lights in the front of the computer as usual but they go off as soon as it shuts off. Added nothing new as far as programs go, but windows updates and norton updates are installed in the past 2 weeks. Am not a computer wizard, know enough to get a few things done. Checked HJT and its the same as two months ago. Nothing new. It clicks on as normal, then you hear it click off before it even does much of anything.
