Msconfig Mishap- Service Disable Accidentally ?
May 26, 2007
I have a problem. Quite recently I was using the msconfig to manage startup programs and services. I had to temporarily diasble all start up programs, and right after (no restart) i went to the services tab. I wanted to check the "hide all ms services" but accidentally i clicked on "disable all services." msconfig froze, so ended it and started it again. I went on the service tab and most of the services were gone (all essential & virusscan stayed).
Then I restarted it, and windows asked me to reactivate my account. I cliked on (do it through internet" and tried it. It didnt work. It said that there was no internet. I clicked on "remind me later" and the desktop loaded. My theme is now the classic theme! so i tried to change the theme and the the "blue/silver/olive" themes weren't there. So then i went to the help topics and it said "please run the help service" i did not know what this meant. So i thought that i should do system restore, but i couldn't! There was only one save point, and that was from when i just accessed system restore during this situation.

Is there a way to find out what programs that are associated in msconfig. Some are recognizable, and others, don't know or won't seem to disable? dumprep 0-k %stemroot%system32dumprep 0-k(dash is a small dash seemingly attached to the k)I don't recall this one, and tried to disable it CTHelpercthelper.exe

When i try to use msconfig to turn off several startup programs, no matter what I chose, when I click apply and ok, and close msconfig, and then open msconfig again, all the programs i tried to turn off have a tick by them again... there seems to be some junk programs there - i use AntiVir Guard as virus protection, so I guess it's unlikely to be a virus

First off I am new to the forums and I really hope that someone can help me. I am not sure if I posted this in the right area but hopefully I did. Yesterday I relocated my girlfriends computer. I shut it down, disconnected everything and re-set it all up. Once everything was connected, I turned it on. I noticed that it took forever and that there were a ton of applications being opened upon start up. So I went to run and went to msconfig to disable them all. Afterwoods I restarted the computer. Once it rebooted, I did a disk cleanup as well as a defrag. All went fine. Then a window popped up saying that there was an update available and I agreed to update the computer. I remember it saying that it was a windows service pack 3. Anyway the update went through with no issues to my knowledge. Well this morning she went to use it an dnoticed that there were several problems. One the user account that was established no longer exhists, all of her photos, videos, and music is gone, and the computer is not reconizing the wireless card we have for the internet so she cannot connect. Naturally she is blaming me for all these problems cause I was that last person on the computer and I cannot see how I screwed this all up.

Cannot access msconfig.exe even though I am logged on as the administrator, just get the following message. "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service you may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes" Have tried system restore three times to different dates and after each bootup I get the message after logging in "cannot restore to 26th DEC" or whatever other date I tried. Have also done a search for msconfig.exe and the only exe file is in the path C:WindowsPrefetch under the name MSCONFIG.EXE-35E4DAE9.pf. Am sure the correct file should me in a windows system folder but don't seem to be there.

In the default installation of XP, the Messenger service runs by default. Messenger in Windows 2000/XP is similiar to the functionality of what "WinPopup" was to Win3.x/9X. However, having this service running will cause problems in the very near future, as ANYONE can send popup messages to your computer when you have this service running. (The service doesn't check where the message comes from). Don't believe it? At the command prompt, type "net send IPADDRESS_OF_CLIENT_TO_SEND_TO Your Message" and that person will get a popup window immediately with "Your Message" .. the popup window will says "Messenger Service" in the titlebar and will contain your workstation's name and the time. You can send a message to yourself by typing "LOCALHOST" to test this.Another thing worth noting, if you are using a Microsoft firewall, these messages will still be sent through the firewall. To make it so others cannot send these messages to you, disable the Messenger service from Services. (Go to Control Panel > Perf. & Maint. > Administrative Tools > Services. Double click the Messenger Service, change 'Automatic' to 'Disabled' and click the Stop button.) Once you've done this, people trying to send messages via the net message service will get errors. While you're at it, it might be wise to disable the 'Administrative Alerts' service as well. The description Microsoft gives for this service is as follows: "Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start."

Also the computer browser is disabled and I am unable to start it.I am not very technical so any instructions need to be fairly straightforward please.

How can I disable the windows service that prompts me when an executable file is from any unknown publisher? The attached image is a screen shot of the security warning. I don't care about any of the associated risks with disabling this, I've already disabled the windows firewall and security center, I just find this pop-up quite aggravating and would like to know how to make it stop

I have 11 computers at one of my work venues that I use for a class. I would like to disable some of the startup items on them. They are all 2000 or NT OS. When I type MSCONFIG in Run I get a message saying"cannot find the file (or one of its components)". I did login as administrator, by the way. I don't have the discs for these machines. They were donated by the County for our use.

my mom installed a virus the other day on accident. (Some program called Dr. Spy Shreddar, or something like that.) I deleted it, but some stuff was weird with the computer. I tried restarting the system to get the old configuration back, but the virus just installed itself again. For one of the problems they made me go into the registry and set something to the value of 0 in order to get the desktop tab back in the Display Properties box. (You know when you right click on the desktop and select properties.) That's all fine and dandy, but here's the other 1/2 of my problem: I can't access some of the features in the tab.

My system uses a SiS650 onboard graphics solution on a Windows XP computer, which obviously shares my main memory, and so i recently tried to fix this by installing a NVIDIA card.
I had problems with the NVIDIA card, and so decided to remove it and go back to the onboard graphics.
However, the onboard graphics card was listed in the hardware manager, but was said to have a fault and could not run. Another graphics option, Video Graphics Adapter, was listed beside it, and according to its properties was conflicting with the SiS.
So, I did the really smart and clever thing to do and disabled the Video Graphics Adapter, thinking that it would therefore allow the SiS to run without a conflict, and so restarted.
I imagine many of you are now rolling about with laughter, the OS wont be displayed at all, due to the fact i have most likely disabled ALL VGA cards...
I have tried booting in Safe Mode, but it doesnt work, it hangs, and i have tried booting in VGA mode, but again, it doesnt work.
Is there anyway to perhaps re-enable the VGA from the command line interface or something?

I have never seen this happen before,I think one of the kids accidentally did something.Got on one night and a lot of my stuff was no longer on my desktop, but not everything, some of the stuff is still there, possible stuff that has been on the desktop for the longest time. Anytime I restart the computer, all bookmarks in both Internet Explorer and FireFox go away and anything that I had downloaded onto my desk top since the last restart goes away also.Another odd thing I noticed, is when I restart it says something about another user on the computer.Computer not setup on a network.Think someone told me once this wording doesn't always mean what it sounds like.

I run a windows XP home standard computer.A few days ago I started trying to tidy up my computer, cleaning the registry and getting rid of duplicate files -with software help of course-.I used Eusing Free Cleaner, and apparently while it's just fine for registry cleaning, it does a very bad job at trying to clean duplicate files, since it shredded -meaning they can't be recovered- some things that were essential to the system. What they were I don't know. But apparently the 'Stand By' function in shut down no longer works, and I can no longer adjust the monitor refresh rate, which is stuck at its lowest setting. Is there anything that can be done to try to find out what files are missing, and to download them again?

I went to msconfig and turned on safeboot with minimum startup programs. Unfortunately, I use an external monitor because my laptop screen cracked, thus the screen is not showing up on the external monitor. I cannot see a thing and I can't fix the computer to return to a normal startup. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6000 with XP Home Edition OS.

I was trying to find any Hidden Folders inside the "Desktop" folder, so I went to Properties and clicked on Hidden, thinking that would show hidden files, obviosly I was wrong. I then unchecked it. Both times a small window opened and you could see files being changed i assumed. Then I tried unchecking Read Only. But this time when the small window was up and the files were changing, I got a messege box asking if I wanted to change 3 files. I clicked Yes. I didnt find what I was looking for and rechecked the Read Only box since that was the way I found it. Now I have some problems (Im sure alot of you are shaking your head at me, i dont blame you). When I try to open Mozilla Thunderbird to check out Email, i get an error that says our disk my be full or close to full and that there is a security issue, to conact our IT professional. Now that wasnt word for word, but close. Its the same with a few other Applications. Is there any way to fix this? I am thinking I will need to reinstall XP Home again.

Running winXP.I recently accidentally deleted Userinit.exe due to a false positive. Desktop would not load up but could still run programs.read somewhere that userinit.exe ran explorer.exe so tried running that from run.would start to work, brought desktop n everything up, but would freeze.on a whim i opened the control panel from run to see if there was anything i could do from there. When i ran control, it started my desktop and everything worked just fine.
Since then, i can start everything normally from running control when i start up. but i imagine it would still be healthier for my computer in general to have userinit working properly. however, here is where my computer knoledge fades. from reading other similar probs, it would seem that userinit has different parts? reg keys ect. only part of the whole working userinit configuration or whatever seems to have been deleted, since reading others who have had it fail completely dont appear to be able to do anything with their comps. so wondering how i can go about finding out which part i need to replace/fix. looked in i386, and there is a userinit, but when i go to copy it over to sys32, says overwrite? i didnt, since i would assume that means that part is fine. any ideas on what i need to replace?

i'll start from the beginning. Today i accidentally clicked a random add and managed to get AV security suite downloaded into my comp, Very annoying program. So it blocked me out of all my settings and did the normal thing rogue spy-wares do. So i restarted and quickly ran msconfig and went into safe mode. I don't really know much about safe mode so i opted to do a system restore. I did it for 5 days ago, the 22nd and when i restarted. I had no audio device recognized and explorer wont stop crashing. As im typing this explorer has perma crashed and im deathly afraid of what i should do. Please help :[ I really depend on this comp for a lot of stuff and would hate to have something so stupid as a spy-ware destroy it.

So today I was cleaning out my computer, deleting and moving around old and useless files and documents, etc. I have one folder that contained a plethora of important documents for work (mostly WordPad .rtf documents that I spent countless hours composing). I have another folder, under the same name, in a different part of my computer, with old, useless stuff in it. When I attempted to delete this file, I accidentally right-clicked on the important file, and hit 'delete. Now, a huge amount of hugely important WordPad documents are gone. I checked my Recycle Bin, and nothing was there (on my computer, deleted files oddly usually dont go to the Recycle Bin). I then looked to see if I had stored backups of anything, and I had backup copies of a grand total of 3 of my documents (leaving easily 100 still gone). I then did the only thing I could think of that could possibly restore my lost files: I did a System Restore (I restored my computer to a checkpoint made at about 8 PM yesterday). They were still not there.

Was fixing to re-install windows, and I found I accidentally deleted the partition that was my external drive. I did not install windows, or format it, but when I rebooted windows, I cannot access it. It simply says. this disk is not formatted, would you like to format it now. I know of a way to recover the files, and copy to another disk, but as I am presently out of disk space, is there a way to fix the partition that was deleted. Hoping to do this cheaply. I might spend 15.00 for a program, but am shooting for a simple method
