View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to do a System Recovery to restore my system back to its factory settings (I'm using WinXP Home). When I hit F10 upon startup in order to access the system recovery, nothing happens- it boots as it would regularly. I was able to boot up using the CD, and am now in the System Recovery console. Might anyone tell me what I need to do to perform a non-destructive, or even a destrucitve system recovery?

If my hard disk dies I don't want to have to reload the operating system and all its updates, reload all my software and their updates, recreate users This literally takes days.I want to be able to put in a new hard drive and completely recreate my entire system from my backup drive and be back up and running in a couple hours.

View 4 Replies View Relatedthe CPU would peg at 100% on a program launch and drag the machine to ahalt. Once the program was up and running, everything was back tonormal. Keep in mind that this is NOT just a "slow computer" - it wasbrand-new behavior that started for no reason I could discern (I didn'tmake any hardware or software changes before the problem cropped up).I've run a couple of antivirus programs and adware cleaners and they've found nothing. I've used utilities from sysinternals.com to look at what's going on and I can't see anything strange.
I'm having problems simply launching applications. If I attempt to launch an application, it will show up in Task Manager (but not in the UI), but will almost always stop loading at ~5MB in memory (usually from about 4.7 to 5.7MB). Every once in a while, the program will start without a hitch, but it's rare. The one somewhat (but not entirely) consistent thing I've been able to find is that if I kill another program, I can then start the program I was trying to start (again, I have 1GB of RAM in this machine and plenty free, so it's not a memory problem).
I am having a problem where everything seems to take up way more CPU usage than it used to. There is no application stealing processing power. Rather, when I start an application that would normally use a bit of CPU, it now spikes the CPU.In particular, 5 year old game called Neverwinter Nights is now unplayable and spikes up to 55% CPU usage on both cores even though it should only hit one core. The Earthsim program also does the same. So do other applications.

I tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.
I'm running Windows XP SP3 with everything up to date as far as I know. I have the complete set of my PC's OEM Disks that I've used once when my OS was completely messed up, had Geeks Rescue out and they couldn't figure out what was wrong, so I know what they are for. What I'm not understanding are the several tools I'm afraid to open listed in my "Start"/"All Programs" I have both "Compaq"/"Compaq Presario PC Tools" with "Compaq Application Recovery"/"Compaq Recovery CD-DVD Creator"/"Compaq Recovery Tools CD"/"Compaq Support Information"/"Compaq System Recovery"/"Remote Assistance"/"Safety and Comfort Guide"

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy system uses a SiS650 onboard graphics solution on a Windows XP computer, which obviously shares my main memory, and so i recently tried to fix this by installing a NVIDIA card.
I had problems with the NVIDIA card, and so decided to remove it and go back to the onboard graphics.
However, the onboard graphics card was listed in the hardware manager, but was said to have a fault and could not run. Another graphics option, Video Graphics Adapter, was listed beside it, and according to its properties was conflicting with the SiS.
So, I did the really smart and clever thing to do and disabled the Video Graphics Adapter, thinking that it would therefore allow the SiS to run without a conflict, and so restarted.
I imagine many of you are now rolling about with laughter, the OS wont be displayed at all, due to the fact i have most likely disabled ALL VGA cards...
I have tried booting in Safe Mode, but it doesnt work, it hangs, and i have tried booting in VGA mode, but again, it doesnt work.
Is there anyway to perhaps re-enable the VGA from the command line interface or something?
I have never seen this happen before,I think one of the kids accidentally did something.Got on one night and a lot of my stuff was no longer on my desktop, but not everything, some of the stuff is still there, possible stuff that has been on the desktop for the longest time. Anytime I restart the computer, all bookmarks in both Internet Explorer and FireFox go away and anything that I had downloaded onto my desk top since the last restart goes away also.Another odd thing I noticed, is when I restart it says something about another user on the computer.Computer not setup on a network.Think someone told me once this wording doesn't always mean what it sounds like.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI run a windows XP home standard computer.A few days ago I started trying to tidy up my computer, cleaning the registry and getting rid of duplicate files -with software help of course-.I used Eusing Free Cleaner, and apparently while it's just fine for registry cleaning, it does a very bad job at trying to clean duplicate files, since it shredded -meaning they can't be recovered- some things that were essential to the system. What they were I don't know. But apparently the 'Stand By' function in shut down no longer works, and I can no longer adjust the monitor refresh rate, which is stuck at its lowest setting. Is there anything that can be done to try to find out what files are missing, and to download them again?

View 2 Replies View RelatedPurchased a Presario SR1220nx two months ago. It came with a 'System Recovery Disk".(SRD) Is this all I would need incase of a complete software problem to get back in operation again or should I be copying some additional OS files to a CD ? What are the disadvantages of the SRD and the advantages of having the WinXP software ? Seems to me that the SRD is all that I need in case of a failure?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to help a friend update or correct her winxp on her HP pavilion 520w I have a copy of my winxp cd from my dell system however I dont have the product key code to use it. So I have tried repeatedly to reset her computer to boot from her cdrom without success. I even posted here last week and someone suggested to tap the delete key when rebooting to change the boot sequence. I wasnt able to get it to work. However I did accidently discover that tapping F10 brings up the Recover system on her computer. Not knowing exactly for sure if I could just correct her winxp with recoverying the whole system I turned off the computer to stop it. I have 3 questions if the Recovery System on this HP model allows you to correct a current copy of your windows without reformatting? how to set this HP model to reboot from the CD-rom?

Whenever I boot the computer I get a Windows Installer box pop up trying to load SFR. It tries to gather data, gets halfway and then disappears. It does this twice before it stops trying. Sometimes it will re-appear while I try to open files. Does the same as above then stops. How can I get rid of this?
