XP Pro, compaq laptop. Now, the Server service hangs on starting. Boot the laptop, a few services start (see first listed Info event), then nothing for 15 minutes, at which time the error is logged, then the Server service starts, and all is well.During that 15 minutes, the taskbar, Start menu, etc are all unavialable--the hourglass is in effect.I've tried the netsh ip int reset command, also the winsock reset command,without effect.
View 11 RepliesI inherited a LAN with Win2000 RAID 5 as the main server. I am not IT trained and have learned some by reading books, papers, etc. but still have along way to go. Things run fine except that every 1-2 weeks the server will either crash with no BSOD just blackness and no response to keyboard or mouse, or it will BSOD and save a mini dump, or it will reboot itself and sometimes save a mini dump. I have no clue how to read these dumps.
There is never anything indicating any kind of problem in the Event log prior, but after I get a message saying the previous shutdown was unexpected. When the server crashes the other DC on that domain will not serve the clients although they share the AD. I have 2 other domains, both WINNT, and one disallows access when the main server crashes and the other domain I have no feedback on.
running (in system services tab of msconfig) when machine is set to be Home/Home Office desktop (NOT set as server)? The machine is for personal use and does not support a site nor other constant 2 way use to web. It does occasionally share it's cable router with a laptop (mostly just to update protectors on laptop).Would stopping this service help speed up machine? Would it cause any harm or malfunction (are there other items this non-server usage needs that are dependent)?

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have an old computer. My uncle threw it together from scraps and sent it to me. It ran very well for about a year or two. It runs off Windows XP Professional. The problem with it now, and i just cannot figure it out, is when i go to start the computer. The computer boots normally, and so does windows, however when it displays "windows XP" just before showing the users list, it freezes. The mouse still is able to move, but it is as if there is no more users at all on the computer. I have been tinkering with it for over a year and still cannot find a way of getting into it, or getting it to work. Reformatting the computer is not an option because i have important information on the hard disk. Got any advice?
View 10 Replies View RelatedIm having a bit of an anoying problem with it, it will randomly hang completely requiring reboot when i open programs, there is no pattern to what programs it hangs on, they are all different types, and it only hangs on them sometimes (there are a few it hangs on every time) ... The computer is overclocked somewhat, however i tryed taking the processor back to its 'out of box' speed and it still happens (it happened a couple of times before i even overclocked i noticed) so it can't be anything to do with that, i don't think..

View 6 Replies View Relatedit wasnt problematic when i 1st set it up about a month ago. the startup was defo alot quicker.the system sometimes hangs during a game, it used to hang on startup but i fixed that with system restore in startup because of the slow startup (where it doesnt seem to be actually doing anything! no cpu of mem usage just ages to load startup programs) i used some startup removal programs to delete all unnecessary startup program, it hasnt speeded anything up it takes the same amount of time but just loads less programs.i have also run ccleaner, reg cleaners, tried running ad-aware but never completed a scan as it freezes. i have always had zonealarm pro runing and bitdefender
when powering up it seems to show the blackscreen very often, asking to turn on in safe mode? even when the pc had been shutdown properly. othertimes on powering on the pc hangs on the windows loading page or when enering the password.the pc can also restart randomly during general use or gaming.this is very fustarting and was hoping you guys could give me some of your advice? i was thinking maybe do a system restore to the day when the pc was first built? would this be a really dumb move? what would be the consequences?
I have successfully cloned my primary c partition of a dual boot system with XP Pro on the 1st primary partition c: and XP Pro on the 2nd primary partition as d: I can boot into my XP on the c: drive with no problem, but when I attempt to boot into my XP on the D drive it hangs on the blue screen right before booting into the user profiles. And believe it or not it continuously loops making the windows startup sound and the shutdown sound. It does the same in safe mode.

So here's the deal: I try booting into windows one day, and I can't even get as far as the boot screen. Safe mode only results in a hard reboot, so I decided to run a repair install of windows XP. After doing this, several things started going wrong:
- At startup I receive a message "generic host service for win32 needs to close"
- Explorer's theme reverts to windows classic after a few minutes
- several key services are not running at startup, i.e windows audio, DCHP client
- at one point my audio randomly cut out and my screen began to fade to white, but the computer's been fine since, I just want some input before I decide to try running another repair install to see if there's any other way to remedy this situation.
The procedure is as follows:
Right-click databases -> Restore Database
I mark 'from device', click the '...' button & select 'File' in the dropdown, then brows to the file itself. Under 'select the backup sets to restore' I check the only checkbox there, then in the 'To Database' I select the name of the database in the file (a new DB name appears there as you select the file).
XP Pro SP2, all latest updates. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though. My question is, does uninstalling sp3 remove sp2 as well. I can not see sp2 under add/remove programs, but my windows update history says I downloaded sp2 last May.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.
My startup time went up drastically.
I have disabled all but two of the automatic startup items using msconfig. My system used to start in less than two minutes, easily. Now it takes a more than a minute or two longer than that.
I know what the problem is; the only three items that show in the system tray after startup are:
1) The AVG Antivirus icon .
2) The Spybot SD Resident icon.
3) Local Area Connection (This is the icon which shows two computer monitors with screens that light up and go dark periodically)
Now, after the problem started, the last item, the Local Area Connection icon is the one that doesn't load, for VERY long. So it may be something to do with that. Also, just before the icon finally shows up(after which point the computer is fine to use) I've notice that a Windows security notification icon appears...it flashes, for just a second, and then is replaced by the Local Area Connection icon. For the record, these are the two icons I'm talking about:

I have had my automatic updates disabled for a while now, so you might think that that's the reason the notification is showing up but I've already disabled that notification using Windows Security Center.
Try making my laptop less slow and not freeze all the time when doing the simplest of tasks.
However, my problem happens after trying to disable the Startup Items from the MSconfig dialogue.
-After I have unchecked the boxes I don't want, I click OK or Apply;
-It then tells me I have to restart for the changes to take place, so I do this;
-Then after completing its restart a message says that "The System Configuration Utility is in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts up."
-it then opens the MSconfig dialogue box again.
If I just close the utility or click ok, sure enough it keeps on opening every time I startup. Or else, what it's trying to convince me to do is to start up in Normal Mode. But I won't do this because then all the Startup Items I'd disabled become enabled again and the whole lengthy task was a waist of time!
The run link is missing from my startup menu...can anyone help me find it? I know this sounds dumb, but I really need to restore it to my startup so I
can take care of some other problems I'm having.
How do you remove the "Common Startup" items from the startup list in msconfig for Windows XP? I did locate and remove the "Run" items that are located in HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionRun.
