Following a recent change of monitor my computer now hangs at the windows logo screen. It also hangs during startup in safe mode and when trying to boot fromthe windows CD.
View 6 RepliesI have a old Dell computer which I brought a 24" Dell HD monitor. I upgraded it with a new graphics card which has both VGA and HD capability hook-ups. Now we have a new tower to go with exisiting 24" monitor. My problem is I can not get a old standard VGA monitor to work with the old system listed above. When I plug in the the VGA monitor plug in the VGA outlet in the old computer I get no signal to the monitor. What do I need to do with drivers or other wise to get the old computer back to being able to be used with the old VGA monitor?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new emachnies T6528 computer hooked up to a "Balance digital technology" 17" LCD monitor.If I go to start, shutdown, and then restart, the computer will restart fine again and again. However, if I go to start, shutdown, and "turn off" and shut the computer completely down, then hit the computer power button to start the computer a few hours later or the next day, the monitor says there is no signal. I tried turning the monitor power button on and off. I also tried moving my mouse. The computer does not seem to start or do anything and the only way to turn it off is to cut the power by unpluging it or turning off the switch at the surge protector. Just pushing the computer power button will not turn off the computer when this happens.I checked the cable connections and they are good. For some reason, after cutting the power and turning on the computer again a second time, it works. I have been through the scenaro several times and it works the same way each time.
View 13 Replies View RelatedI want a program to run at startup and I want to be able to change what I have done at any time.
There are a number of unchecked entries in msconfig and I have to use Selective Startup all the time.
If I want to revert to Normal Startup under the General tab instead of Selective Startup, the program's box automatically rechecks itself in Startup.
The Startup tab gives me a handy record of what I did and allows for an easy change of mind so long as I continue to use Selective Startup.
If I edit the Registry to stop programs running at startup, they won't show in msconfig and I lose the handy record of how it was and I may have to reinstall the program to go back to it running at startup.
I would like to accomplish this:
1. Use Normal Startup instead of Selective Startup.
2. Have some programs not run at startup, but be able to easily change back to having them run at startup.
3. Have a readily accessible list of those programs and the details as shown under the Startup tab as a reminder of how it was without having to manually enter it all into a text file or keep a notebook or reinstall.
Is there some way to use Normal Startup, stop programs running at startup, but retain or find a list of those programs (including the details under the headings Startup Item, Command, Location) that is shown when using Selective Startup with unchecked boxes under the Startup tab?
To put it another way, use Normal Startup but somehow retain the convenient flexibility of Selective Startup.
I have inadvertantly changed my screen monitor orientation on XP when cleaning the keyboard. Its now up side down.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have physically turned my LCD monitor 1/4 of a turn clockwise, so what used to be the top is now the right side. The text on the screen is also sideways. the left side of the document is at the top of the screen.
I want to be able to orient the text so I can read it. I've heard that this can be done, but have no idea how to do it?
The color of the background on my screen has become strange. The white changes to a pale yellowish, light kaki tint for no apparent reason. It happens to both the web pages as well as the folder windows. Sometimes it changes back and forth and other times doesn't change at all. The really wierd part is that pictures and graphics don't show the yellowish tint. I am using W-2000Pro with SP4, Rollup and updates.
My Monitor is an Acer AL1912 LCD and I have had it from new. My Computer is about 3 years old and I have had it from new. It is a 3.2 P4 on an Intel 915gagMobo. Intel replaced this board about 1 year ago.
There has been no abuse to the system, it has very few games on it and I have not added new software lately. I am the only one that uses this computer and it is my home PC. I use AVG 8.0 Free and Spybot. Both are updated. Other than an errant cookie, they have not found anything in the last 3 months. If you need any more information or need to move this to another forum, just ask.
On my Dell 8250, I added a 1800 Flat Panel display and when I went to load the drivers, I found the Properties button greyed out. I went to device manager and no monitor was listed not even the Default Monitor. I've looked all over and can't find a clue on how to ungrey the Properties button.

What I want to do is view the computer on my external monitor, so I can transfer some files to another computer--but I can't see to change the settings. Can this be done just using 'keystrokes' or is there some other way?FYI: I bought this computer from BestBuy. It was quite expensive in 2003. recently, I brought it back to have it repaired. The Geek Squad wrote up a work order and charged me a $238.00 non-refundable deposit (as the warranty was no longer in effect). They told me they'd have to send it to California to be repaired.

I use a Dell LCD Monitor and every time I have tried to format and reinstall XP on my hard drive I go to my Monitor section and the Monitor Properties are shaded out thus making me stuck with the default crap that XP put on for my comp. I have the drivers I need for my monitor but the frackin thing wont let me use them.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an old computer. My uncle threw it together from scraps and sent it to me. It ran very well for about a year or two. It runs off Windows XP Professional. The problem with it now, and i just cannot figure it out, is when i go to start the computer. The computer boots normally, and so does windows, however when it displays "windows XP" just before showing the users list, it freezes. The mouse still is able to move, but it is as if there is no more users at all on the computer. I have been tinkering with it for over a year and still cannot find a way of getting into it, or getting it to work. Reformatting the computer is not an option because i have important information on the hard disk. Got any advice?
View 10 Replies View RelatedIm having a bit of an anoying problem with it, it will randomly hang completely requiring reboot when i open programs, there is no pattern to what programs it hangs on, they are all different types, and it only hangs on them sometimes (there are a few it hangs on every time) ... The computer is overclocked somewhat, however i tryed taking the processor back to its 'out of box' speed and it still happens (it happened a couple of times before i even overclocked i noticed) so it can't be anything to do with that, i don't think..

Boot the laptop, a few services start (see first listed Info event), then nothing for 15 minutes, at which time the error is logged, then the Server service starts, and all is well.During that 15 minutes, the taskbar, Start menu, etc are all unavialable--the hourglass is in effect.I've tried the netsh ip int reset command, also the winsock reset command,without effect.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI start computer and during windows xp logo booting screens the monitor will go blank (orange light by monitor power button) and keyboards lights will turn off numlock caps and scroll lock will not turn them back on and the little light on my wireless usb mouse reciever goes out. however the pc front lights disc tray and network lights remain on and fan is still going. but sometimes i do manage to get passed the startup (10% of the time) and into windows for about 10-30 minutes before the same blank screen freeze up happens. i know its not totally a videocard monitor issue because not just the monitor goes blank everything stops responding......

View 1 Replies View Relatedit wasnt problematic when i 1st set it up about a month ago. the startup was defo alot quicker.the system sometimes hangs during a game, it used to hang on startup but i fixed that with system restore in startup because of the slow startup (where it doesnt seem to be actually doing anything! no cpu of mem usage just ages to load startup programs) i used some startup removal programs to delete all unnecessary startup program, it hasnt speeded anything up it takes the same amount of time but just loads less programs.i have also run ccleaner, reg cleaners, tried running ad-aware but never completed a scan as it freezes. i have always had zonealarm pro runing and bitdefender
when powering up it seems to show the blackscreen very often, asking to turn on in safe mode? even when the pc had been shutdown properly. othertimes on powering on the pc hangs on the windows loading page or when enering the password.the pc can also restart randomly during general use or gaming.this is very fustarting and was hoping you guys could give me some of your advice? i was thinking maybe do a system restore to the day when the pc was first built? would this be a really dumb move? what would be the consequences?
I have successfully cloned my primary c partition of a dual boot system with XP Pro on the 1st primary partition c: and XP Pro on the 2nd primary partition as d: I can boot into my XP on the c: drive with no problem, but when I attempt to boot into my XP on the D drive it hangs on the blue screen right before booting into the user profiles. And believe it or not it continuously loops making the windows startup sound and the shutdown sound. It does the same in safe mode.

There are numerous applications such as McAfee, etc. and other McAfee components in the startup, my question is, can you change their order in startup and therefore control which ones activate first to last? And by doing this can or would you be able to improve any amount of the startup performance?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows XP Home installation and the main account is set as an administrator account.when we log into this account the command prompt window is displayed, but not with a c prompt and there is nothing we can do to exit it (i.e unable to type exit)
On looking at the startup options in msconfig, which is what's causing the command prompt window to open:
Startup Item: svchost
Command: C:windowssystem32driverssvchost.exe
Location: HKCUSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrenVersionRun
So using the account that is in the administrators group I tried to deselect it but when clicking Ok or Apply I get this message:
Error: An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change the service. You man need to log on using and Administrator account the make the specified changes.
But I am using an Admin account...!?!?
So I tried rebooting into safe mode, then as the 'Official' Admin account to change it but when I login as the Administrator the svchost isn't in the start up options?
There are a couple of other accounts that are just standard accounts and they don't have the svchost on their startup.
I changed from a domain to a workgroup on a work computer that stays at home, but remotely access the network via the internet. I had to reboot, however it turns out the account I was using is on the remote domain, so I cannot log in. I don't have the administrator password, and would like to somehow set the domain back to what it was earlier so I can log in again. How would I go about doing this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI started out having a trojan or a virus that kept me from being able to do much on my computer, and I was running VERY slow. So I tried doing a Restore point and that did not do, because my computer could not find a restore point it could work from. I had several, but I would get an error message saying I could not use that restore point. Anyway, I then decided to reformat it. After I did that, my monitor started acting up. It has NEVER done this before... It would be on, and I would be computing right along, and all of a sudden my monitor would just go black! Then it would completely log off. I would get a message saying there was no connection. It never did completely turn the computer off (like some errors usuallly do) it was JUST the monitor, but I could not get the monitor to come back on unless I turned the computer off myself and rebooted it. I did a reboot and it worked for about 30 minutes and then started doing the same thing all over again, but this time it would only work about 10 mintues then shut down the monitor. I would reboot and the same thing would happen over and over again.
I went to microsoft online and looked for the Windows XP downloads and decided to try and update anything I needed. It did all the updates and said I had something that was damaged and needed repaired so it fixed that problem and I tried it again after the reboot. Still nothing helped the problem.My DH first thought it may be the video card. He opened it up to check and found it was very dirty and dusty around the fans etc.so he cleaned it, hoping that may have been the problem and put it back together. I tried it again and got the same thing! NOW, it will work about 2 minutes before it turns itself off! So tonight he is going to try a different video card in it and see if that helps...if not he said it may be the motherboard. Do you have any other suggestions as to what may be causing this problem? I am at a loss myself.I have also ran my ZoneAlarm Suite, nothing picked up, McAffee, found nothing, AVG found nothing, I did a disk defrag and that did not help either. I uninstalled all the antivirus and antispyware and still did not help. I now have only the McAffee running on it. (By the way I did not have all the antivirus programs running at the same time, ever.)

It acts "the monitor that is" like it gets unplugged from the computer. The pc is still running.

There were no widescreen options. It should choose the monitor's native resolution on its own if the monitor is an LCD.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst time user, and at my whit's end with my computer. Bear with me as my computer knowledge is very limited. I have a Gateway 2.8 GHZ celeron with 1GB of ram. I also have a Radeon Video Card (forgot the exact model). I went to activate my computer from standby mode and it would not come up. I did a hard reboot and when windows came back up it was real slow and the computer monitor did not "turn on" until it entered windows. It seemed to be in safe mode. No icons were available on the desktop and the background I had was reduced in size and surrounded by the basic green background color. The other colors are also screwed up, the seemed very basic. I was able to get McAfees to come up and am currently running a virus scan. The start button with it's options is available but with very limited use. I tried a system restore, but the window would not appear. Whatever I open seems to open the window on the far left side of the screen beyond the reach of the mouse. Bottom line is the computer is, for the most part, inoperable.

I could move my mouse. And then My computer started Beeping like hell. it wasnt one long one, it was alot of fast beeping. I clicked my mouse a few times, and the beeping stop. View 2 Replies View RelatedI dont know if this is in the right Forum as its a strange one.Just before i was playing on Counter Strike and the computer crashed.The power was still on, on the CPU, and also on the Speakers and Monitor.But the Monitor isnt picking up the Computer, ive tried a different monitor but to no avail.Ive basically just swapped all the wires over from the computer onto one of my old computers which im on now, and there was no problems what so ever.So clearly its something wrong with the other computer, but it still powers up and is running, but just nothing appears on my screen
