View 1 Replies View RelatedI just replaced my old Windows 2000 HD with a newly purchased HD and installed Windows XP Pro/SP2 with all the latest updates from MS.When opened this web page by placing cursor on the line and click, the Google page appears briefly on the myWin.doc window but immediately closes and opens a new, different size window for the Google web page. In the old Windows 2000, the Google page remains opened on the same window overlapping the myWin.doc window and no new window is opened.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was trying to change the appearance of my icons via "Tools > Folder Options > File Types > Advanced > Change Icon". Next thing I know, every time I try to open a folder, it does a "Search" instead -- so I try to change this by adding a new "Action" (open). Now, what happens, (and which is my problem), is that a new window opens whenever I open a folder. The option for "Open each folder in the same window" is set.

First problem: With a complete disaccordance with my screen settings, my system tray icons are all coloured in 16 colors instead of 32 bit. Rest of applications and all other windows environment are fine. I fail to make any sense out of it.Second problem: Out of the blue, whenever I am double clicking on a folder, it opens in a new window instead of the old one.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy computer keeps freezing for no reason at all. It starts up normally, and everything loads just fine. I go to open MSN for example, it opens, but I try to do anything inside of that program like open up a new window and it freezes. I press end now and it doesn't close no matter what, even after hours. I minimize it, go to desktop, try to open a folder and explorer freezes. At this point nothing opens up nothing works and I restart.
I have restarted plenty and its the same story every time. I hadn't done anything different than I usually do with my computer. Just one morning I go to my computer and its been doing this non-stop ever since. When I start the computer in safe mode, this problem doesn't occur so its obviously software, but what could be causing this?
Is there a way to get each newly opened window, regardless of the program, to always open centered & 1244 x 700 in size? From what I can tell, there's no global setting for this in XP.

I managed to change them to an explorer window instead, but in file type, I can figure out how to get "open" back as the default when I click on these folders. The right click menu either has expand greyed out, or doesn't have it at all. Open is the third item, and find first (now) with command window second. How do I reset these? And, any idea what would have messed them up? I did start sharing with my son's computer and I downloaded firefox 1.0.3.

View 27 Replies View RelatedI know this is a weenie problem, but I don't have the time or patience to research it on my own, help please. After my last fresh install of XP, occasionally when I open a folder it opens as a tiny rectangle in the upper right corner. I have tried to resize the window, then exit, it's fine for a while, then the little bugger makes a reappearance. I've been through Folder Options, TweakUI, and if the info's there then I hust have missed it.I have several installs of XP, this is the first appearance of this issue. I could also just chalk it up to the 'PCnality' of the machine.Hardware is Pentium M 2.0,1 gB RAM, 7200 RPM 80 Gb HDD, Radeon 9600, Asus M6N homemade laptop.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.
When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.
I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions "explore" and "open" (bolded).
The only folder that seems unaffected by this problem is the "Documents" folder on the desktop, and any shortcuts that point to folders.
I was having this problem on my old install of XP, which desperately needed a new install. In any case, I'm now using a freshly installed version of XP, and everything has been running perfectly for about 2 weeks. Suddenly, this one problem reappears: The File Open / Save As dialog box (aka Windows Common Control / comctl32.dll) takes forever to open (20 seconds to 60 seconds). I just did a chkdsk and defrag, and that did not solve the problem. Also, there are no network drives connected which could be slowing things down. This happens in both MS programs (such as Notepad) and 3rd party programs (such as Firefox).
