My computer keeps freezing for no reason at all. It starts up normally, and everything loads just fine. I go to open MSN for example, it opens, but I try to do anything inside of that program like open up a new window and it freezes. I press end now and it doesn't close no matter what, even after hours. I minimize it, go to desktop, try to open a folder and explorer freezes. At this point nothing opens up nothing works and I restart.
I have restarted plenty and its the same story every time. I hadn't done anything different than I usually do with my computer. Just one morning I go to my computer and its been doing this non-stop ever since. When I start the computer in safe mode, this problem doesn't occur so its obviously software, but what could be causing this?
Around a week ago my computer started to act very funny. When I incerted a cd my properties window would open, when I started a program my microsoft office started to install, then I need to re install drivers.
This is a nuisance which is really bothering me, about half the time i open a normal folder, the comp freezes, and i have to control alt delete and end task a couple times to make it go away. Does anyone have advice?
When i open any link with "open in new window" the new window is not full size screen window.Of course i dragged it by mouse many times and that should fix it later. It means it should be opened as it had been dragged, but that's never happened though i dragged it about a hundred time as a full screen size. What is the wrong here?
I just replaced my old Windows 2000 HD with a newly purchased HD and installed Windows XP Pro/SP2 with all the latest updates from MS.When opened this web page by placing cursor on the line and click, the Google page appears briefly on the myWin.doc window but immediately closes and opens a new, different size window for the Google web page. In the old Windows 2000, the Google page remains opened on the same window overlapping the myWin.doc window and no new window is opened.
I currently have four hard drives, and I have noticed a problem on one of them that in windows related. The drive is not my OS drive, and only stores data. I have noticed that when I try to access or add files to folders on the drive, windows will lag for 5-10 seconds. I click on a folder and the system lags, then after 5-10 sec the folder I clicked is highlighted, and I can open it and its subfolders with out further problem. During this 5-10 sec, the explorer window is frozen. If I back out to a root folder, and try again, the same thing happens. When I try to save files to this folder from the internet I get the same thing. I right click an object, click “save as…†type in or retain the default name, navigate to this folder, and click Save. My IE window freezes.
The main problem: I try to open "My Computer" "Control Panel" "Search" that type of stuff from the start menu and it seems like my OS just completely freezes up, the start menu window just freezes and locks onto the background, desktop becomes inactive where I can not click any icons or anything, usualy this happens for a period of time then it just self terminates, screen goes blank to background desktop image for a couple secs then comes back (as if I had not tried to open whatever I had tried to)
I have searched to see if this was asked before without any success. Maybe someone has run into this problem before. When I open "my computer" or "control panel" after I close it...it automatically goes into Internet Explorer as a blank page. Most of the time, when I close the IE blank page.it stops responding and I have the control-alt-delete to "end the program"
While trying to add a DOS prompt to the Folder context menu. I seem to have inadvertently broken/deleted something in the registry.Whenever I now open a folder, it always opens in a new window, irrespective of the folder settings (in tools).
I was trying to change the appearance of my icons via "Tools > Folder Options > File Types > Advanced > Change Icon". Next thing I know, every time I try to open a folder, it does a "Search" instead -- so I try to change this by adding a new "Action" (open). Now, what happens, (and which is my problem), is that a new window opens whenever I open a folder. The option for "Open each folder in the same window" is set.
I actually have 2 problems, which both, one of, or neither are the result of me using the DOS emulator for Windows DosBox.So here goes. First problem: With a complete disaccordance with my screen settings, my system tray icons are all coloured in 16 colors instead of 32 bit. Rest of applications and all other windows environment are fine. I fail to make any sense out of it.Second problem: Out of the blue, whenever I am double clicking on a folder, it opens in a new window instead of the old one.
When i try to open windows media player, the tab will come up on the bottom but the window wont open. I try to maximize and the tab shoots up to the left off the screen.
Is there a way to get each newly opened window, regardless of the program, to always open centered & 1244 x 700 in size? From what I can tell, there's no global setting for this in XP.
When ever I am clicking on something the window that I want opens behind the main one. Lets say your in control panel, you click on add and remove or user accounts. It doesn't pop up in front of the control panel.I see it on the task bar and I just click it to make it display. What could the cause or settings for this?

When I open System Restore all I get is a blank window. Nothing. Just white. How can I get my system to restore System Restore without completely re-installing Windows XP?
Since installing IE7 the open windows on the taskbar show the url instead of the website name. For example instead of showing 'Yahoo' it says http://yahoo.com. Is there a way to change this?
I must have screwed something up.some but not all of my folders open a command prompt window. I managed to change them to an explorer window instead, but in file type, I can figure out how to get "open" back as the default when I click on these folders. The right click menu either has expand greyed out, or doesn't have it at all. Open is the third item, and find first (now) with command window second. How do I reset these? And, any idea what would have messed them up? I did start sharing with my son's computer and I downloaded firefox 1.0.3.
When i open internet explorer i can see home page and explore it. But there is some problem when i open new window or enter to a some link. Its very slow. and after that there is iexplorer.exe error on display.
I know this is a weenie problem, but I don't have the time or patience to research it on my own, help please. After my last fresh install of XP, occasionally when I open a folder it opens as a tiny rectangle in the upper right corner. I have tried to resize the window, then exit, it's fine for a while, then the little bugger makes a reappearance. I've been through Folder Options, TweakUI, and if the info's there then I hust have missed it.I have several installs of XP, this is the first appearance of this issue. I could also just chalk it up to the 'PCnality' of the machine.Hardware is Pentium M 2.0,1 gB RAM, 7200 RPM 80 Gb HDD, Radeon 9600, Asus M6N homemade laptop.
I had some spyware/viruses/malware recently, and they've now all been cleaned up with internet security software, but I still have a lingering problem: when I double-click on a folder, instead of the folder opening, a new window opens and it's a search window, with the destination folder (ie the one I just clicked on) as a value in the parameter "look in:". The only way I can just open a folder is to right-click, and select open.
When I right-click on a folder, the menu reads: "Search (bolded) / Open / Explore" etc. which doesn't seem right.
I tried to fix it by changing some options in Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types. There are two kinds of folder, "File Folder" and "Folder". In the advanced options for "File Folder", the only action it lists is "find"... I'm not sure if this is where the problem is or if this is normal? I tried to add a new action, but it wanted me to select an application to perform the action and I have no idea... In the advanced options for "Folder", it looks to be normal, it lists the actions "explore" and "open" (bolded).
The only folder that seems unaffected by this problem is the "Documents" folder on the desktop, and any shortcuts that point to folders.
