May 25, 2005I've seen this message before but the answer escapes me. My desktop icons won't open any programs unless I right click and then open.

Upgraded - Desktop Icons And Icons For Programs Are Gone
Jan 17, 2006I just upgraded from 2k to XP. On 2K i could have all my desktop icons and icons for programs i use down on the task bar above open applications. Im sure theres a way to do this on XP so i dont have to go to my desktop or the start menu every time to open a new program.

Desktop Shortcuts On My Desktop Will Not Open Any Programs
Oct 9, 2007When my computer was turned on this morning the desktop shortcuts on my desktop will not open any programs. Non shortcuts such as my computer or outlook express open normally. I have recreated all shortcuts and the new shortcuts still won't open. I have tried the obvious of restarting the computer and I have run my antivirus programs (symantec,spy bot and adaware) w/o anything being found. Can any one give me any ideas of what may fix this issue?

Aug 24, 2005So I have no taskbar nor icons on the desktop. Except that all works very well... I have access to the programs and all my documents via the taskmanager. I've been told, by the technicians at the shop where I had bought this pc, that they have heard of such cases often recently, but they didn't try to understand why, they just formatted the hd and reinstalled windows. I am wondering if there's a way to repair this.
I've read on some forums that osme adware called "sysu.exe" , "ddm", causes such a problem, bu I haven't those apparently. Otherwise norton , and spybot s&d don't detect anything that might cause this either...
Desktop Icons All Open Same Program
Jan 16, 2006My caps lock on my keyboard works in complete reverse. with the "caps lock" on all of the letters are in small caps and when it is off all of the letters are in large caps. also my shift keys do not work. With the caps lock on the periods and commas give me "larger than" and "smaller than". the only way to get a period is to go to the "numeric keyboard. also I can"t reset the cursor when I try to go back to an earlier place it highlights the words in my folders I am unable to choose only one file When I click on a file it highlights every file from the beginning of the list to the one I have chosen.

Sep 28, 2007Every shortcut that I have placed on my desktop will not open the website that it is linked to. When I click the icon, it starts to open the website, but then locks & will not open. All icons will open except the ones that I have added that link to things like fantasy football sites or game sites etc. I am running windows XP on a Dell laptop.

When I left click some icons, the "search" window opens instead of the program I wish to open.When I right click these same icons, the menu box opens that gives me choices ( open, explore, send to, copy etc) as it should However, the top selection in the drop down box (highlighted) is "search" instead of "open".As a routine now, I must right click and icon, choose "open" from the drop down box, and go about my business. How did "search" get into the box to begin with, why are only some of the icons infected, how do I get rid of it.I just installed my new "anti everything" renewal for 2005 (Norton) and it saw nothing, (The Norton icon also has this problem) I've tried freeby spyware remover etc.. nothing. I deleted the infected icons, went back into explorer and created new shortcuts.

Jun 5, 2008I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

Jun 22, 2009When I start my PC the only thing that appears is the wallpaper and the mouse arrow which does move but no right click. I've tried SafeMode and get only the words Safe Mode in four corners so I can't do a system restore. I've tried restoring to last known good configuration but I get the wallpaper again.The only thing I can think of doing is a full restoration but I have 300 itunes on my hardrive which are paid for.
If anyone has an idea how to get my programs & icons back, I'll try anything.
Not Responding - Programs Or Icons
Jul 12, 2005I have 4 sign in's including the administrator, when I log in under the administrator, no programs or icons respond, including My Computer. Under the other log in's, they do respond but I do not have access to make changes or to see my data to back it up. I managed to install Norton Antivirus from DOS and cleaned up a few viruses but programs will still not respond. Should I reinstall XP, would I loose my data ? Also I can not find my XP disk but do have the package with the key, can you download another version and input the key?

Aug 23, 2007I find that certain programs show up blank boxes,instead of the icons which are supposed to be there. For example when I click on Mcafee antivirus software, it opens up a blank box. I can't remove it through 'add remove programs' because when i click 'remove' on it another blank box pops up,which is actually supposed to have the 'uninstall' icon. The same is the case with System restore. I cant do a system restore because nothing comes up when i click on it except a blank box. I do not know what other programs would have this kind of problem. Please help me resolve this issue.

Jul 18, 2008This is one of those problems that is difficult to search for, though I tried pretty hard.Facts:When multiple programs are running, if I click an icon on the taskbar to switch to that program, the icon just blinks. Sometimes when I have the problem, if I quickly click it 4 or 5 times it will switch. Other times, that doesn't help. I have to use ALT+TAB to switch programs. Restarting the computer or logging off/on corrects the problem. Shutting down all running programs and opening them again doesn't help. Has been happening for a long time, but I'm fed up with it today Happens only sometimes, but I can't find a common variable between the occurrences and I can't reproduce it on demand WinXP Home (multiple accounts, but only one person needs logged in when problem occurs.
