"Help and Support" no longer work on my computer when activated from the START menu. I have no idea when it stopped working. When it's activated, HELPCTR.EXE runs for a few seconds and then exits. No help window. No entries in any of the event logs. Nothing to give me a clue. I have an HP m1180n (Pent 4) running the latest version of Windows Media Center.

Ever since, even doing the smallest thing like rolling the mouse wheel will make the computer go up to 70, 80, even 90% computer usage. Also, I cannot seem to run games now because my Direct3D is apparently not activated.

It stays updated, with whatever I open, but I just can't click on anything. Or I should say, clicking has no effect. Right OR Left.This seems to come and go with restarts. But not every restart more randomly.I am running Windows XP with SP2.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI clicked on a movie which I have saved and watched before and is supposed to play in iTunes, after I clicked on the movie to watch it my task bar at the bottm of the screen went black... the start menu wouldn't come up, and the scroll bar thing on my touchpad stopped working. So I rebooted, by using ctrl alt del then selecting shut down, then turn off.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIn the last few weeks I have noticed that if I try to search for a file or folder by clicking "Search" on the start menu I am not able to open the search window. I used to be able to do it this way until quite recently. I can however, search by opening a new explorer window and hitting the "Search" button on the tool bar.I have looked on Microsoft KB for a solution and tried repairing it by following Article ID:913503, to no avail. I also tried doing a system restore but no help.The problem has occurred on both my Desktop PC as well as my Laptop.Has anybody else come across this problem, and more importantly found a solution.I'm running XP MCE on both machines, with Norton Internet security on my laptop, and Zonealarm Pro Security Suite on my desktop PC.

View 8 Replies View RelatedTo restore the Turn off Computer button in the start menu. I had a single user account and did not need to log in to the computer. One fine morning I find that the Turn off Computer icon has vanished from the start menu! Moreover, I cant press ctrl+alt+del to start the task manager, it says "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrater". My account was an administrator account with full privileges, but it got changed to a debugger account. I created another user account with administrator rights, logged into that account and changed the properties of my original account to full administrative account, but when I logged back on to my old account, I still find that the situation is still the same. The only way I can switch off my computer is by logging off, and then selecting the Turn Off option in the logoff screen, which is tedious and of course irritating.
View 14 Replies View Relatedhi guys,i'm hoping some kind person could help me with a problem i had last night.I've become very interested in photography so i downloaded Infranview,along with its plug-ins.I don't know what happened or if it was something i did in the install but when it had finished,i found that all the left side of my start menu was blacked out,also,when i hovered on my 'all programmes',nothing showed up In a panic,i uninstalled the Infranview but it still left my problems which in the end,with a lot of seaching,i found system restore and went back to the day before which put right my pc.

I installed Windows XP on my computer, but when I got to restart / cut it on its just a blank sceeen. I can't see nothing like (start menu, my computer,etc..) What have I done and how do I correct it ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just taken my brand new desktop system out of the box and there's no Start menu or icons appearing on the desktop. The monitor automatically initiated a startup wizard to select the correct resolution but once that was complete, the desktop was blank (except for the Windows default rolling green hills wallpaper). Not even the mouse pointer is visible. I restarted but after startup it went to the blank picture again. I tried pressing the Windows key on the keyboard,and also tried Ctrl+Alt+delete to get the Task manager but both times nothing happened. All components are plugged in correctly, and I haven't installed any software other than what came installed from the manufacturer (please see specs in my profile); I literally plugged it all in and switched it on.

View 12 Replies View Relatedi wanted to give my comp a thorough clean up so i did an online anti virus scan (Panda Anti virus). In the middle of the scan, the desktop and the start menu disappeared. My hunch was that explorer.exe terminated. I tried restarting explorer.exe through the task manager but it said "explorer.exe is not a valid win32 program". When i restarted the computer, windows opened but i cud only see my wallpaper, no desktop or start menu. All programs are working, the only thing is that i have to start whatever i want to use using the task manager.

I've tried a couple of things that were recommended through another site.
1) I turned "SAFE MODE" on and the cd-rom worked fine but when I got out of safe it wound not fire up.
2) I uninstalled the cd-rom and let the computer reinstall it but that did'nt work either. Please any help you could give me would be great.
I decided to clear the dust out of the inside of my
computer tower today. After cleaning out all the dust, I turned on the
computer for the first time and I noticed the fan on the side had stopped
operating.
But I have a Nokia Tower/case if that is of any help to anyone. It's the
colourful fan on the side which has stopped working.
My USB devices were working fine untill I went to Windows Updates and downloaded all the latest updates. This is when all my problems started. Now when I plug in a USB device I get a balloon on my task bar stating that my "USB device is not recognizied". I have done all the troubleshooting. I have XP PRo with all the latest updates.

What happened was this: I loaned my computer to a freind and told him, "Don't install anything without checking with me first!" He did, for about half the stuff I took off after I got it back.And my alt-tab has stopped working. The thing is, it works fine for the other profile on the computer. I'm assuming the problem is a registry setting somewhere. I looked and compared but I couldn't find anything out of line. So now I'm at a loss. I know I missed something somewhere. Oh, and I'm using WinXP SP1 on a Compaq Presario 2100, which I update on a regular basis.(This is a loptop I use as a "loaner," not my good one with all my personal stuff on it, by the way. Maybe I should get a copy of Norton Ghost before loaning it out again.?

Anyone know why this is happening? I can still work with the computer and do other stuff, but it just takes a while for the box to come up. It's really annoying.

View 3 Replies View Relatedmy keyboard got messed up and stopped working. When I was messing around with the back of the tower to try to fix it, I somehow killed my sound off too. Eventually, I got a new keyboard, but after adjusting with the stuff on the back of the computer tower the sound still didn't work.
Since my sister's computer specs and mine are the same, I checked out the device manager on both of the PCs to see what was missing from mine. I found out that it was a "Realtek AC'97 Audio" listing. So of course, I google it up and download what I find. However, after installing it, it still doesn't work. It doesn't even show in the device manager! And to make matters more confusing, when I start up my computer, it says that I can press Shift+F10 to configure it. When I do that, a DOS-like menu pops up where I can change a few options but nothing I change will get the sound working.
When I go to Accessories --> Entertainment --> Volume Control, it says that there are no active mixer devices available.
I don't think it's related to viruses or spyware. I've scanned multiple times with TuneUp, Spybot, Ad-aware, Norton, and a few other programs.HiJackThis information:

The sound on my PC stopped working about a week ago. Hadn't installed anything in at least the few weeks before it stopped.
I decided to re format the PC a few days later thinking that it would be fine, which initially it was, am running XP professional. Windows did all its updates as per normal and the sound stopped again.
Reinstalled the PC yet again to try and get to the bottom of things and this time went through things a bit more slowly. Did it's first lot of updates, was fine after those. That was yesterday that they updated. Tonight installed Service Pack 2 and thats when it has stopped.
In the Sound and Audio Devices section of the Control Panel it is saying there is no audio device installed, yet I had installed it via the CD that came with the motherboard. Soundmax sound on an ASUS k8v SE deluxe motherbord. why something like this may have happened?
I downloaded Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier for a free 30 day trial, decided I didn't want it, uninstalled it and now my XP Pro Defrag has ceased to work any longer.
I get some weird message that it can't initialize and that I must have downloaded a different version .
guess the two were fighting each other.
Point is, can I download MS Defrag as a stand alone (Googled but no luck) or do I have to reinstall XP all over again...
Also, is MS Defrag good enough are does Diskeeper do a better job for the averge home user?

I bought myself a LAN Cable.I plugged the LAN Cable into a single port router (one computer at a time) through an external Modem, and it worked great for about a month.
I tried to open a page, and a message said: Problem Loading Page. It had all the usual [U]ww.google.co.uk[U] and www.goggle.co.uk, but mine was correct. In the Taskbar (bottom right hand corner) it came up with an image two computers with yellow dots transferring between them, and then it changed to two computers with a caution sign. I hovered over it and it said: Limited or No Connectivity. So I did the obvious thing, checked cables were plugged in, unplugged cables, restarted modem, restarted computer e.t.c. but it still said Limited or No Connectivity. I went into Local Area Connection Status, and it said, Limited or No Connectivity...to renew IP Address, click "Repair". So I clicked repair, and it said could not renew IP Address, please contact Service Provider. I rang the service provider, and they said unplug everything plug it in and retry... This didn't work. Since then I’ve tried things I’ve seen on Forums, and on websites:
