I was dual booting XP and Vista but didn't want Vista anymore. So I got rid of Vista, and that's all said and done now. Problem is, the boot loader is still coming up telling me to choose between "Earlier Version of Windows" and "Windows Vista". How to I get rid of it without using Vista's boot manager?

I decided to upgrade to Vista today from Windows Xp. Rather than doing the upgrade process, I decided to start off with a fresh format/install.
after the first reboot in the Vista setup process (where Vista attempts to load data from the HDD) the system would just sit there after post as if the Vista loader couldn't properly detect the partition. I currently don't have time to troubleshoot the Vista problem with my system, so in desperation I have tried to go back to XP. I am able to boot into Windows XP setup, format the drive, and copy over the beginning essential files. However, after the system reboots after the initial copy of the data... XP is not capable of booting from the hard drive. this was not a problem before I tried to install Vista.
To check if a problem had occurred with the drive, I installed Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is able to boot from the drive without any problems. However....... when Ubuntu loads grub, it detects the following on the MBR: The Vista loader appears to be preventing Windows XP from properly booting from the hard drive. The drive is a Western Digital 320gb. I have 30 gbs set aside for Windows to boot from. The rest of the drive is another partition with files I cannot afford to lose.
I have a new laptop that came with Windows Vista. I have been trying to load it with Windows XP because Windows Vista didnt work. I am pretty sure a format and clean install will wreck my warranty, hence the dual boot. So far, I have been able to partition and install XP SP-2 to a partition. I've booted into XP fine but my Vista partition is not available. I think that the partition table or MBR has been corrupted.
So to repair this, what I did was boot up from the Vista recovery DVD and run the 'startup repair' option to reload the bootloader for Vista and thus, enable dual booting. When I rebooted I got a black screen saying 'Invalid Partition Table' or something to this effect. I tried repairing the MBR and so on and so forth from the console on the recovery DVD but this proved to be pretty much totally fruitless. So I went through and did an install of Windows XP once again, to my other drive partition I had created. So I am basically where I started.
I installed Windows Vista on My XP macin, but on another hard drive, I checked it out and then after a while I reformated the HD, and removed Windows Vista from the boot.ini, making my XP set as the default. With Vista removed from my hard drive, well for some reason every time I boot my XP system I have to choose the XP system. If I do not make it before the 30 secons I get a message that the operating system is missing.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have started to rebuild my desktop as it has become slow. I purchased the PC with windows XP professional and have the sticker in on the box with the license key. However, I used a Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP professional disk to rebuild. When it asked me for the Product Key I entered the code on the chassis but it says this is not valid. I received an email with the Product Key for WGA disk but I do not have the email anymore with the yellow product key although the WGA box does have the Certificate of Authentication on it.c, how do I get another copy of the email with the Product key or get to a point where the product key.

I did have XP and Vista on my PC, But I removed Vista ( I dont want it back just yet) I had the problem with Missing NTLDR and i fixed that, Now it says Bootmgr is missing press ctrl + alt + del to restart.I have used the good results at Gooooooogle and from what i have found its a vista thing with bootmgr.

Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?

I originally had Vista Business edition on my laptop and decided to dual boot with XP. So far I created a partition on the same drive (C: ) as Vista and installed XP on it. how do I choose between Vista and XP when my computer boots up? When I turn on my computer it boots straight into XP and doesn't show that menu where it gives me a choice of which OS I want to boot

After it finishes the initial installation and restarts it says to press any key to boot from the CD. I wait without pressing anything and than it says that there was an error reading the disk. I have 2 HDs, both over the 137 GB limit (or whatever it is) so I assume it may be related to that. Also the main HD has a separate partition for Vista.
I don't really use the one HD so I was going to just install XP on that and be done with it. Well when I went to do that, it said that it couldn't recognize the formatting on the C drive or it may be damaged and would need to reformat it to continue. I had partitioned my HD to run XP (pro sp3) and Vista. Not liking vista, I deleted it and merged the two partitions into one, XP. Now when I boot I still get the option to boot to vista or an earlier OS. There is only one OS so I thought that would just be gone. Its not. A third Seagate 500G is for games, etc. Vista was installed first and the internet connection works. XP works well except I cannot make an internet connection. I have a Linksys WRB54G router which takes its internet connection from my cable company's modem. I have 4 ethernet connection points: 1 goes to a desktop, another goes to a notebook, the third goes to the computer in question and the fourth is unused. This router also has wireless capability. My build chassis is a Thermaltake "Kandalf" LCS, 1000W CoolerMaster, XFX 790i Ultra MB, Core2 Duo E8500 at 3.16 GHz, 4gig Corsair DDR3 in two 2gig sticks, two XFX 9800GX2 in quad SLI, a cd/dvd drive, and a floppy, kb, and mouse. Motherboard has two ethernet ports, one in use (Vista).I am not familiar enough with networking to know how to proceed. So now I'm stuck with this:I've tried running eveysingle usable option in the repair window but none worked. I've even tried replacing the BOOTMGR via CMD in the repair window with the Windows Vista Disc but still nothing.And whenever I try to do the install, once it gets to the last step. The hardware is very dated (about 6yrs, AMD 1800+, AGP 2, PC2100 ram) and I want to upgrade to new stuff. So being a good citizen I called Microsoft and ask the question, "How do I legally install the legal copy on my new equipment while uninstalling it from the old?" The old hardware is not going to be reused, just to old and slow. Two reps from M$ told me that I could not use my legal copy with the new hardware while one said that I could but had to uninstall it somehow while online so they could verify and activate it for the new stuff. They never got around to telling me how to do that. I take that as a no that they won't allow the 2nd use. So what OS would you choose at the moment? I think I am going to try to reuse the current copy. If that doesn't work I'll repurchase, but which? XP Pro, XP Home, XP 64, Vista, Vista home, Vista 64? I understand that SP1 for Vista has gone into beta so it shouldn't be long to get that. If anyone has some input or experience I would greatly apperciate it. Does anyone think that this is wrong? I'm not trying to cheat M$, as I said it is a legal copy. Any Microsoft employees out there? If I want to reuse a piece of hardware no prob right? Seems to me to be the same thing. PS: By the way I use the machine for general purpose computing and gaming which is why I need to upgrade. I have been getting Fragged alot in UT2K4.
I will be formatting my drive now and I want to install XP and Vista so that I can choose which one to load at the start of booting up. How would I do this? Do I need to create two partitions, install both operating systems on the separate drives and then done? Or is there more to it? Which operating system should I install first, if there is any difference

I have read around and can't find a solutions that seems like it should or would work for me. I have 3 hard drives 2 sata and 1 ide, the ide just has music mp3's. I used to dual boot my 2 XP operating systems just fine by changing the boot.ini but I can't find the correct way to choose the numbers with my new Vista installation
