Re-installation / Removed Windows Vista From The Boot
Jun 13, 2010
I have started to rebuild my desktop as it has become slow. I purchased the PC with windows XP professional and have the sticker in on the box with the license key. However, I used a Windows Genuine Advantage Kit for Windows XP professional disk to rebuild. When it asked me for the Product Key I entered the code on the chassis but it says this is not valid. I received an email with the Product Key for WGA disk but I do not have the email anymore with the yellow product key although the WGA box does have the Certificate of Authentication on it.c, how do I get another copy of the email with the Product key or get to a point where the product key.
Thanks

I installed Windows Vista on My XP macin, but on another hard drive, I checked it out and then after a while I reformated the HD, and removed Windows Vista from the boot.ini, making my XP set as the default. With Vista removed from my hard drive, well for some reason every time I boot my XP system I have to choose the XP system. If I do not make it before the 30 secons I get a message that the operating system is missing.

I was dual booting XP and Vista but didn't want Vista anymore. So I got rid of Vista, and that's all said and done now. Problem is, the boot loader is still coming up telling me to choose between "Earlier Version of Windows" and "Windows Vista". How to I get rid of it without using Vista's boot manager?

The moment I loged in and reboot. I bumped into the unbootable stage again. However, this time the repair feature did not work and I ended up having to do a re-install. So now I'm stuck with this:I've tried running eveysingle usable option in the repair window but none worked. I've even tried replacing the BOOTMGR via CMD in the repair window with the Windows Vista Disc but still nothing. And whenever I try to do the install, once it gets to the last step. It tells me something like this:"Cannot move onto next steop, issue doing the install blah blah blah. Windows will not restart something something."

I recently partitioned my hard drive using Symantec Partition Magic. I installed Vista Ultimate on a separate partition. After installing, I would reboot and the normal dual boot menu would come up every time i booted my computer. But after realizing that I didn't like vista, I deleted the partition. I did not uninstall Vista, I just deleted the partition. Than I applied the newly unallocated space to the rest of my harddrive. But now when I boot, I still get the dual boot option. It tells me to pick Vista or an "Earlier Version of Windows".

I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?
Thank you,
Al

I originally had Vista Business edition on my laptop and decided to dual boot with XP. So far I created a partition on the same drive (C: ) as Vista and installed XP on it. how do I choose between Vista and XP when my computer boots up? When I turn on my computer it boots straight into XP and doesn't show that menu where it gives me a choice of which OS I want to boot

I initially started with XP and created a separate partition for Vista, installing Vista on the other partition, Vista sees the (XP) Earlier version of windows. When I choose XP, I get the following error: NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt. If I repair the XP with fixmbr - I end up screwing up Vista. Then when I repair Vista, it end's screwing up XP

I'm currently running Vista on a raid 0 array, and want to dual with XP. I have two partitions, one with vista and the other that I tried installing XP on. After it finishes the initial installation and restarts it says to press any key to boot from the CD. I wait without pressing anything and than it says that there was an error reading the disk. If I remember correctly, after it restarts it goes strait into windows setup. This happens every time I try restarting, but I can get back into vista by putting the hard drive to boot first. In vista I can see the other partition where XP was installed, and inside is just a folder titled WINDOWS and it seems like all the windows files are in there

I've formatted my hdd using hirens boot cd, partition magic. xp install starts, goes through "setup is loading files", gets to "setup is starting windows" and stops, all activity stops (hdd, cd), full silence. if i'm not mistaking, eula comes next and F8 to continue. i left it for 8 hours and waited, no result. same thing happens with vista - goes through loading files, i get a screen with that green line going from left to right and goes on and on and on forever.I've tried with 2 different xp cds, one xp64 cd and vista dvd. nothing.linux ubuntu installs without any problems.i've tried erasing MBR with acronis disk director suite (hirens boot cd) and with DOS line "fdisk.exe /mbr", but every time my installation freezes.

In 2005, I bought a desktop PC, which included an installation CD for Windows XP. That computer broke down a few months ago, so I bought a laptop with Vista pre-installed. I have grown really tired of Vista and I would like to use XP for my laptop. So I used my old XP installation CD, but after I clicked "Install", a message appeared. It told me that the installation could not be done because the Windows system on the laptop (Vista) was newer than the XP on the CD. Can this be fixed in any way?

My home computer gets used by four different people, all of which, apart from me, have almost no idea what they're doing. So, to protect my music collection from accidental deletion etc. I used the user access feature of vista so that only my user account could access the folder that contains all the music... I now cannot access this folder from XP... the data is still there, I've done my maths with free space on drive, but XP reckons the folder is empty, and says. Quote: d: music is not accessible Access is denied when I double click it..

I just installed XP pro Sp2 over Vista Home Premium on my laptop. Please note that I originally had XP and upgraded to VISTA (big mistake) a year ago. The installation process went well, however I can't connect to Internet. My network connection shows that I have a connection. I tried to do ipconfig from command menu and did nor get any IP address.

I got this dell inspiron 1721 from a friend, and it had Vista Home Premium. I wanted to get XP back, so I installed it and then the system was dual booting and it took up 85% of my hard drive. SO...I tried to reformat it and just install XP, but the only disk i had was for my (gateway xp media center) desk top so none of my dirvers installed and then the whole thing became a big mess. Now, I have XP installled with most of the drivers installed, but now I miss Vista, and when I try to install with my Vista recovery disk, I get an error: can not install install missing or corrupt file e:sourcesinstall.wim error 0x80070570... or something similar to that. I have been at this for days on end.

I purchased the following system from Costco and was glad I was able to purchase the system complete without having to add components after the sale. I have tried and tried to get used to Vista (6 months) but as I am disabled and my brain doesn't always compute efficiently, I've had difficulties. Mostly with getting things recognized on the small network in my home. My other computers run XP and I wonder if there is not some conflict with the different operating systems trying to access the same files and printers? Finally I just decided to go back to XP..

Dell that has been fried by lightning and wants me to get the pictures off the Hard Drive. No problem, sort of. The problem is that now I see no info when I boot the computer. The monitor only comes to life when windows starts up. So, I can't enter into the BIOS, change my boot drive, mess with my arrays, or anything. I'm using Windows XP SP2. My HDD are SATA while the Dell's was IDE (just thought I'd throw that out there).
Problem occurs after the Dell HDD has been removed.

Isn't the problem going from vista back to xp an sata driver problem? If you would disable sata native mode then boot from the xp cd it should show the hard drive and any partitions. The biggest chore may be getting the drivers needed for XP and if is a laptop they rarely come with a floppy drive, so during the xp install I don't know if after you press F6 if you can remove the xp cd and put in a cd that you burned the needed drivers to if a floppy is not available. People should have the freedom to choose whatever operating system they want without all of the headaches

I have a new laptop that came with Windows Vista. I have been trying to load it with Windows XP because Windows Vista didnt work. I am pretty sure a format and clean install will wreck my warranty, hence the dual boot. So far, I have been able to partition and install XP SP-2 to a partition. I've booted into XP fine but my Vista partition is not available. I think that the partition table or MBR has been corrupted.
So to repair this, what I did was boot up from the Vista recovery DVD and run the 'startup repair' option to reload the bootloader for Vista and thus, enable dual booting. When I rebooted I got a black screen saying 'Invalid Partition Table' or something to this effect. I tried repairing the MBR and so on and so forth from the console on the recovery DVD but this proved to be pretty much totally fruitless. So I went through and did an install of Windows XP once again, to my other drive partition I had created. So I am basically where I started.
