Installing Vista Screwed Up My HD?
Oct 8, 2008
I am in over my head... My big hard drive just came up as a grossly smaller size and I got a message from the OS saying "this drive needs to be formatted."How I got here is kind of long, but bear with me. It started a few months ago with my screen randomly not working when I'd turn on or restart my computer, as if my cable wasn't connected or something. I spent hours and days on forums and help sites trying to figure it out, with the general response that either my crappy motherboard was dying or my video card.
D: all my stuff. programs, files, etc. Nothing os'ey so it'd be relatively protected. important.

About 4 months ago I tried to make a partition on my HD to install XP SP2 on it, while running Vista Business, which I installed on the laptop (it originally had XP), but something screwed up while making the partition and Vista was erased from my laptop and XP was installed on both partitions. When I turn on my laptop a boot screen comes on to choose which partition to boot up. I've always chosen the larger partition, I've never tried booting the other partition, I'm scared it will screw something up. All of my files are on the bigger partition, the one I always use. But I want to know how to delete the other partition so that there is only one partition and I can use the space on the partition I don't use at all. I want to do this without deleting my files if possible.

I've been casually looking for a new laptop for my Mom for her first computer. Now I am ready to get one, but just about the only choice is something pre-loaded with Vista. I have no experience with Vista and have heard more bad than good about it, therefore I think it would be easier to get her up and running if we're not both having to learn a new OS.
I upgraded my computer from ME to XP with few problems but wondered how difficult it would be to take a new laptop and go backwards. I know I'd most likely have to purchase a Full version of XP, but how much of a hassel is it to get all the drivers/XP versions of necessary pre-loaded software? Would a Vista compatible version of say Word work if I did this? Any other problems I haven't thought of?

I, as do most, hate Windows Vista. Even after turning off the UAC and removing components that i found unnecessary, I still found problems. I much prefer Windows XP. Instead of manually removing components, security settings, etc., I decided just to remove Vista itself. I have searched and searched for a forum all over the internet and all i can find are threads about partitioning of about replacing vista on a laptop (which apparently has SATA driver problems or something to that effect). So I was wondering a few things:
1) Is there a way to install XP over Vista directly?

I found this forum and it solved the BSOD problem by autodetecting the hard drive. Yay, I finally got the Windows Setup screen. However my keyboard isn't recognized so I can't begin the install. It's a USB and I've tried it in other ports. When I pop out the cd, and start the pc normally, the keyboard works. Windows Vista won't start...I'm guessing because I have to change the drive configuration back to where it was. I really want this Vista gone

I recently put XP on a Compaq Presario C700 CTO that came preinstalled with Vista. I had to change some things in th Bios for Xp to install and now I need some drivers. Nothing is supported. I received links for various drivers someone told me i needed but none of them worked partly because i wasn't sure how to install them as the instructions were useless. The drivers I'm missing are Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Ethernet Controller, Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus, Sm Bus Controller, Video Controller, Video Controller (VGA Compatible), and one Unknown device which I think is my wireless (Atheros 06X Wireless Network Adapter). Any help as to how I can get these drivers installed and get XP working would be greatly appreciated.

I decided to upgrade to Vista today from Windows Xp. Rather than doing the upgrade process, I decided to start off with a fresh format/install.
after the first reboot in the Vista setup process (where Vista attempts to load data from the HDD) the system would just sit there after post as if the Vista loader couldn't properly detect the partition. I currently don't have time to troubleshoot the Vista problem with my system, so in desperation I have tried to go back to XP. I am able to boot into Windows XP setup, format the drive, and copy over the beginning essential files. However, after the system reboots after the initial copy of the data... XP is not capable of booting from the hard drive. this was not a problem before I tried to install Vista.
To check if a problem had occurred with the drive, I installed Ubuntu Linux. Ubuntu is able to boot from the drive without any problems. However....... when Ubuntu loads grub, it detects the following on the MBR: The Vista loader appears to be preventing Windows XP from properly booting from the hard drive. The drive is a Western Digital 320gb. I have 30 gbs set aside for Windows to boot from. The rest of the drive is another partition with files I cannot afford to lose.

I managed to create a new partition on my Compaq Presario C700 laptop and install XP. (It came with Vista).First thing I noticed was that I can not detect any wireless networks or connect to the internet now. I am assuming that I need that driver and a whole bunch of other XP drivers as well. I have visited websites where they have a whole laundry list of drivers to download for my situation. Before I go through the painful process of downloading and installing all of them, I want to make sure this is really what I need to do.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN NR160 E which came with Vista Home Premium. Actually it's crashing repeatedly because of an outdate touch pad driver "apfiltr.sys". But I have not been able to find a newer updated version for the same! So I am thinking of reverting back to Win XP.

I recently screwed up my computer by running a crappy reg-edit program which deleted a bunch of important registry and I started to get messages asking me to insert XP SP3 CD to install the files but I didnt have one so I tried rebooting. Upon rebooting I got a black screen saying "ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupted please reinstall ntoskrn.exe" In my panic state I used my XP recovery disks but they just installed another version of windows on my HD. So I used my XP install CD to get into the recovery console and I copied over the files from the CD to my HD.

I accidentally dragged my Startup folder and dropped it into my Microsoft Office folder. I tried to move it back; but, Widows gave me an error box that said it was a System folder and could not be moved. I tried renaming it, deleting it, nothing worked. I made a new Startup folder (like a dummy) and then used an OS that boots from a CD to delete it.

I had a worm or something so I downloaded a adware and spyware program along with the virus protection that was already onboard. Now I get a RUNDLL error message that says C:winntcfgmgr52.DLL as well as a box that says Program Error and inside the box says whatever I'm opening has generated errors and will be closed by windows. I took the liberty of doing a Hijackthis log. Please give advise as I'm going to stay here tonight til I fix it.

Today I got a new computer, and set up a home network with my DSL connection. Well, I noticed that my older computer hadn't been updated in a while so I downloaded/installed all the new XP updates, including SP2. Well as soon as I did that, Windows would not boot. So I turned off auto-reboot when it encounters an error. Even worse. Now I can't even go into safe mode, unless it's the command line. So I decided, what the heck, I need to clean up anyways. And I try to reinstall windows, my CD won't load. So now I'm stuck with a nice blue paperweight that won't boot windows and I can't boot the XP CD. If anyone has encountered this problem, and fixed it, please reply. If not, I'm getting Redhat right now, and going to install that, format, uninstall and put XP back in. I was just hoping for an easier way out.

1) My desktop got screwed up. I opened a paint file, something happened, and now all of the icons on my desktop have a gray box around their text that is noticeable against the background. It's really weird, because it's only happening on this one user account, the other accounts on my computer are normal. How do I fix this?
2) Could someone please check my HijackThis log? I suspect there are a few things to be removed, but I'm not sure exactly which ones...and also, someone please explain to me why I have two instances of svchost.exe running....

I wanted to install Windows XP on an old computer. Its CD drive was broken, so I installed XP from its hard drive instead. When everything was finished, I ended up with two drives, D and E. Unfortunately, I was tempted to change the letters (OCD, much?) to C and D, and did so (via regedit). Now, my computer won't boot up; the welcome screen shows up, but it freezes there.

I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?
Thank you,
Al

I originally had Vista Business edition on my laptop and decided to dual boot with XP. So far I created a partition on the same drive (C: ) as Vista and installed XP on it. how do I choose between Vista and XP when my computer boots up? When I turn on my computer it boots straight into XP and doesn't show that menu where it gives me a choice of which OS I want to boot

When I choose XP, I get the following error: NTOSKRNL.EXE is missing or corrupt. If I repair the XP with fixmbr - I end up screwing up Vista. Then when I repair Vista, it end's screwing up XP
