My mothers computer crashed. she gave it to some kid to get the itunes files off of it. the kid deleted all the files on the disk except the user profiles and their documents because Windows Xp write protects them. I need to get those files off of the drive. How do I go about doing this?
View 9 RepliesI've switched from Windows XP to Windows 2000, because of the fact that I had problems with the GIS program I was working with. Everything went well for a month now, until today. I've uninstalled several programs (not major ones - just mapviewers) to gain more space on the c-drive. I wanted to defrag the c-drive and it gave me an error message "drfgntfs.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You have to restart the program. An error log is being created." I then close defrag and another error message appears "mmc.exe has generated error " the same as above. What am I suppose to do in order to "correct" this?

It keeps loses space and now it is down to 149 MB and I am getting error messages. I have deleted several music and video files, but there is no way I have 142 GB of files on my system
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I do a "disk cleanup" on my hard drive, it shows a whole bunch of categories which can be cleaned up.When I do, there's one category ("Web Client/Publisher Temporary Files" )which always shows 32KB before AND after the clean-up.Could that be associated woth FrontPage 2003, and if so, where are these 32 KB hiding? (Which files[s] I mean?) How come "Disk Cleanup" does not delete these files, even though it tells me that "these files can be deleted safely"?Can I delete them manually?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to start it up, I get an error (before the XP logo and the progress bar) that says that Windows cannot find certain files. I have tried safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. Nothing works.I tried booting from a KNOPPIX Linux Live CD, but for some reason it refuses to boot.I have Win XP Home (preinstalled) on this computer, but it also has a recovery partition (which will erase all my files if I use it - this is a last resort only) and a Win XP Pro upgrade CD.
First of all, how can I get KNOPPIX to run correctly? If I can get it to work, I can get the files I need and do a wipe and reinstall of Windows (which would fix a LOT of things).
Second, if that doesn't work, can I use the XP Pro upgrade CD to get the system back up enough to get the files?Third, if that fails, how can I partition my hard drive and install Linux, then access the Windows partition and save the files I want?
one of my computers crashed, but the main harddrive could be saved.I installed the harddrive into a different computer where it is now a slave drive.before the computer crashed i had a file on the desktop where i placed alot of large files. now, when i try to access documents and settings from the new computer the folder that is the username that would contain the desktop files, i get the error message access denied, not accessable.i can access the desktop files for "all users", and another user folder i created for a friend of mine. but i cannot access the desktop files that i created for my user account.
i am certain that the file that contains the files i want is on the desktop.
I installed 'Virtual CD 5.0.6' on my desktop I installed 10 virtual drives (labelled drive G to P inclusive) I have an external hard drive (labelled 'Local Disk: L) which was turned off when i installed Virtual CD.When i turned on the external HD it did not show in My Computer (presumably because i had allocated drive L as a virtual drive I have uninstalled Virtual CD (and all 10 virtual drives) but still do not get my External HD icon showing in 'My Computer'When i go into device manager the Maxtor External HD is showing. And when i go to the 'Unplug Eject Hardware' icon on my tool bar the HD shows as a USB Mass Storage Device (but without a letter)

View 13 Replies View RelatedBy mistake I unzipped some Microsoft Flight Simulator texture files to my desktop [from a safe site I have been using for years] instead of the intended FS04 folder. I deleted the files and cleared the recycle bin, the next time I turned on the system all the files were on the desktop again. I restored the system back a few days before the files were unzipped, no luck, the files reappear every time my computer is turned on.

I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. View 6 Replies View RelatedSystem crashed last night with a Kernel Stack Inpage Error, but restarted fine ... while diagnosing, I tried to get in to Disk Management through Admin Tools/Computer Management, and received the error, "Unable to connect to Logical Disk Manager service". I checked, and the service was disabled (why?), so I set it for manual and restarted it, still received the error.Oddly, I was able to start it from a command prompt, which then allowed it to start from Admin Tools. What just happened here? Is that service normally disabled? If not, what would cause it to become disabled? Could a virus, worm, or rootkit have snuck in?

The problem is that i have a folder in there with the name "software" every time i want to access this file the external disk crashes and i need to turn off the power and turn it on again.The other folders works ok.i have erase and create again the file but nothing happens.i have the same folder with the same files in built-in hard disk and works perfecty.

as the slave disk.I guess the old disk is not crashed seriously and I am trying to recover some of the data.I have tried to connect the old crashed disk to the slave position and have the jumper setting correct.However, the BIOS does not detect both of them and complains cannot find any OS.
Have VAIO VCG RC310G. Windows XP current SP. Tried to load audo disc to Itunes. System crashed. No picture on screen (black). Tried to use F8 safe mode start without success. Have system recovery dvd. Placed in drive. Turned off machine. Turned on. No screen, just black. Hear fan and drive spinning.Checked monitor and see the Analog/Digital message on the screen, (seems to be working.) This is the limit of my knowledge. Any ideas on how to get the recovery disk to be seen by the computer? Help Juscause (I despartely need it). ps, not worried about the data on the computer, but I would like to recovery if possible.

I turned it off for about 3 hours to keep my room cool. I turned it back on an heard "beep...beep...beep...beep" (the same beep you hear if the ram isn't snapped in the socket all the way) and at the boot up it said "Primary slave hard disk fail" XP would not start. So i hit the reset button, same thing, hit it again, same thing. Powered off and powered back on and it started up fine.

I was running AVG anti virus. Now I removed AVG and installed Microsoft supplied security essential software. (My friend tried to reinstall somehow, and has a few 1/2 installed versions accross his different hard drives.I want to restore from a ghost image we have, but the problem is, there is 7 months of data files (not backed up!) that I want to get saved first.I can boot up via a win98 boot disk and see the files, but I can't work out a way of getting them accross to another hard drive easily. In the old days, I'd use xcopy with the "/s" switch to take all the sub directories etc, but I can't find xcopy in XP or get any copy functions to work

View 6 Replies View RelatedI was running System Mechanic as a routine - (i.e. not a virus, or spyware problem), and Windows XP decided it wanted to do an install of some service pack automatically - which it did an auto reboot in the middle of SM running! Grrr...system froze when it came back up. I came back to just see the frozen screen and SM screen closed - and it ookedrebooted. Now when the computer is turned on in safe mode or regular, it just does a DOS listing of missing drivers - very extensive list. Got a CD hard copy of System Mechanic - but now am told if I use it to rescue the computer, it will delete my files! Yikes!My computer, Xplio, came with Windows installed. The rescue disk, if I can find it, (may be in storage) I believe also says it deletes files if used...one reason I didn't keep it out and easily found. 1. How do I save / rescue my files???? I have many years of nonprofit work on the computer I don't want to lose. 2. Can the computer be "saved"? 3. Is there a way to use someone else's Windows XP disks with their passwords (legitimate copy) on my computer to reinstall the missing drivers? OR - can all the drivers be downloaded from somewhere - ideally for free? I can prove I have/ had legitimate right to Windows XP - I noticed Microsoft charges for tech support - guess I am naive - was surprised it would charge for first call ever!

I got to the point on the install where it highlighted the good partition and I hit "L" to erase it. At that point I stopped and tried a repair from the XP Home disk but no luck. Since it didn't overwrite it (probably just erased some pointers) is there any way to get back the good partition/OS that was on this disk?

Something like that. Then my desktop icons are huge and the color of everything is all messed up and I then have to reboot.Any advice, my computer runs XP is only a year old and ran perfectly until this happen. I forgot to create a restore point before installing the game. I am scared about what could happen to my computer.
