I understand that it is possible to interrogate a hard disk to see files that have been deleted - and cleared form the deleted box - in other words they remain 'hidden' after deletion. Although I understand you cant do it at home where can I find a specialist company to do this? Location N London UK.

If so, is there any way of removing the deleted "Recycle Bin" items without affecting anything else on the Hard Disk? My original and now #2 computer has a very small Hard Disk (15 GB). I have cleaned out everything but the OS and installed programs. I would like to remove the one GB of My Documents files I put into the Recycle Bin and then further deleted from there, if indeed they are still resident on the Hard Disk. My intent is to hopefully increase performance of that machine, which also has a very slow processor and only 190 MB RAM. Right now the OS and programs occupy one-half of the Hard Disk. I am running "XP Home" on that computer. I will only use C #2 for reaching the Internet should my #1 computer "go down. (I would be lost without that daily exercise!) C #1 is fully backed up weekly to an external Hard Disk.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've switched from Windows XP to Windows 2000, because of the fact that I had problems with the GIS program I was working with. Everything went well for a month now, until today. I've uninstalled several programs (not major ones - just mapviewers) to gain more space on the c-drive. I wanted to defrag the c-drive and it gave me an error message "drfgntfs.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You have to restart the program. An error log is being created." I then close defrag and another error message appears "mmc.exe has generated error " the same as above. What am I suppose to do in order to "correct" this?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I do a "disk cleanup" on my hard drive, it shows a whole bunch of categories which can be cleaned up.When I do, there's one category ("Web Client/Publisher Temporary Files" )which always shows 32KB before AND after the clean-up.Could that be associated woth FrontPage 2003, and if so, where are these 32 KB hiding? (Which files[s] I mean?) How come "Disk Cleanup" does not delete these files, even though it tells me that "these files can be deleted safely"?Can I delete them manually?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI get this cyclic redundancy check error when I try to copy files from a DVD-RW onto my hard drive. I burnt said DVD about two years ago using Cyberlink DVD Solution Power2Go. I get this error with mulitiple DVDs, but not all of them (I've got five and I get this error with only three). Also, I get the error with some files, but not others (on the same DVD). I really can't lose these files! My guess is they were burnt wrong, but I'm really not sure. Is there any way I can recover these files?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI have Win XP Pro SP2 I also have an external Lacie 250GB hard disk I want to store my Virtual PC files on. But, it is formatted at FAT32 and I can't put a file on there that is over 4GB. So, I tried to convert the drive to NTFS, but Windows won't let me do this. It keeps telling me the disk is dirty and to run chkdsk / f. Which I have done and completes fine finding no problems on the drive. Yet convert e: /fs:NTFS still does not convert the drive reporting it is dirty. What is causing this and how do I fix it? I have tons of data on the drive so I can't re-partition it as I don't want to loose that data. I need to convert it to NTFS.

I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I got to the point on the install where it highlighted the good partition and I hit "L" to erase it. At that point I stopped and tried a repair from the XP Home disk but no luck. View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed 'Virtual CD 5.0.6' on my desktop I installed 10 virtual drives (labelled drive G to P inclusive) I have an external hard drive (labelled 'Local Disk: L) which was turned off when i installed Virtual CD.When i turned on the external HD it did not show in My Computer (presumably because i had allocated drive L as a virtual drive I have uninstalled Virtual CD (and all 10 virtual drives) but still do not get my External HD icon showing in 'My Computer'When i go into device manager the Maxtor External HD is showing. And when i go to the 'Unplug Eject Hardware' icon on my tool bar the HD shows as a USB Mass Storage Device (but without a letter)

I have dozens like KB890923.log created during windows update, as well as the windowsupdate.log itself - fast approaching 3Mb. Would deleting these affect future updates? I also have several 3Mb+ CDF files - two of which current and with names like {000-001-A0F12...}.cdf and .bak, but others which apparently haven't been modified for 3 years, with names like Ctdv10k1.cdf, Ctdv10k2.cdf and Ctdvaudy.cdf - I imagine these files contain info about the multimedia devices and drivers installed - if I delete the old ones and keep the recent ones, am I safe?

I have already tried right clicking on drive c and selecting format but the message says windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
So I closed all open programs that I could but still no luck. Then I tried the format from running the run command and typing format c:but I get this message format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format can run if this volume is dismounted first. All open handles to this volume would then be invalid. would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (y/n) so I type y for yes and hit enter then nothing
I upgraded my server, basically all I kept was the two hard drives from the old machine. The one hard drive is for the system files (~13GB) and the other is for storage, user files, etc (~160GB). I figured that then I reinstalled Windows 2000 Server on the System disk, I would just have to assign the other disk a drive letter and be on my way. Instead, in the disk management console, I get "Disk 1 [the 160GB) Dynamic Unreadable" I can revert to a basic disk, but it says I will lose all my information. It is imperative that the data on this disk be recovered.
