View 9 Replies View RelatedI will be creating a partition on the second Hdd for the pagefile.I have 2 Gig of Ram installed. My question is what size should the partition be? Less than than 8 Gigs I am aware of.But more importantly, what Min and Max should the settings be for the PagFile. Perhaps let the system decide? If I do set a PagFile on the OS partition I am considering 2MB - 200Mb to generate a kernel dump report. Note: Although I will have an Image of OS If the issue at hand is small enough I amy gain some experience in trying to fix it using the reports.
View 9 Replies View RelatedTwo days ago my hard-drive went kaput for one reason and other. As I tried starting it, I did so by safe mode and it froze at mup.sys; Then, scouring the internet, I came across the idea to repair windows and when doing so encountered Quote: "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 is needed. Type the path...(drop down menu) H:/I386" I did some more googling and encountered a post by our quite helpful moderator Elvandil at this link Quote from http://forums.techguy.org/link http://forums.techguy.org/2119449-post2.html

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got Windows XP home and two external hard drives (connected via USB) and I'm trying to give one or both of those drives paging files. My hard-drives are an I-Omega 500GB and a Maxtor 300GB, both with plenty of room. I want to set my paging file to 650MB.I know how to change the size of a paging file. I go to System advanced performance...etc to get to the virtual memory box, I set the paging-file sizes for the external drives (remembering to press SET) then reboot. When the computer has restarted I run a disc analysis, but the external drives have no paging file.I notice that many people move their paging file to an external drive, so why isn't it working for me?
View 14 Replies View RelatedRunning Windows XP home, well-protected from viruses and spyware with all the usual recommended programs. I have a 160G external firewire hard drive, NTFS system. Cannot access data all of a sudden, I am getting an error message, "file system corrupt and unreadable." In disk management, the drive is listed as healthy, 160G, but no NTFS listed. What could have caused this, and is there a way to retrieve the data? Are there any low-cost or freeware programs to do this, or is it inevitable to spend a "fortune?"

Whenever I try to boot in safe mode, or any mode, I get a blue screen that reads:i did some searching on this forum and found a thread that mentioned taking the drive out of the problem computer and slaving it into a different machine to repair the registry. I do have another computer, so this would be an option for me although may be a bit too advanced for my expertise or lack thereof. But I have a BlacX hard drive docking station (basically an external hard drive reader)
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have multiple partitions on my HD so that I can have things like the OS and the page file on separate partitions for ease of defrag etc. (OK, haven't done this before and am not sure how smart it was after all)Anyway, I decided to move "My Documents" folder from the C drive to a much larger partition to save fragmentation on C. No big deal, it's easy to do.But here's the kicker... once I'd created a My Documents folder in the larger partition, I decided to click on it and move it to the top of the list of folders, using the My Computer screen.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop has a 6GB hard drive which is down to about 400mb remaining. I have virtually no user files (documents) and have even removed most of my programs to get up to 400mb. I have had to reinstall XP a couple of times. Could this be why my hard drive space is being eaten up? I can't see XP taking up 5.6GB! After installing sp2 and other updates there now seem to be many files in the windows directory with rediculously long names (like $NtUninstalKB835732$) each using several MBs. While I'm asking... add/remove programs won't allow me to remove an old Norton Antivirus and a couple of other things taking up about 500mb. Tells
me it can not access the network (I'm not now but was once networked in the
office but all the programs were resident on my hard drive).
Trouble watching video from one of my hard drives (XP). At first I thought it was a codec problem so I uninstalled and reinstalled the codecs but that never worked.
Then I tried watching video on the other hard drive and no problem there.
I confirmed that its a hard drive problem when I tried to copy one of the files from the problematic hard drive, it showed 30mins left where it normally takes 1-2mins.
I checked to see if the channel was in PIO mode but all are in DMA.
My prob is a bit of a saga I defragged my Win XP Media PC a few days ago and then I noticed a clicking noise coming from the hard drive, I called PC servicecall managed to find a freephone number and the chap suggested I do a scandisk, he said to call back with the diagnosis later.
After the PC did two scandisks I managed to stop it when it was about to do a 3rd, I rebooted the PC and it loaded with no 'start' button or clock on the taskbar, so I rebooted. Then I got a message saying 'it can't load as a file was missing or corrupt windows/system32/configuration/system' it said to put in the original CD and type 'r' to repair.
Well the PC didn't come with any CD's and I only have one that I made after I'd had the PC for a month - a recovery disk.
So I called PC Servicecall back and told the guy what happened and I've got another harddrive arriving tomorrow - trouble is I need to get the info from my hard drive before I send it back to them.
I've looked at MS support site and there's options to do a manual repair (I'll copy and paste info here)
Method 1: Replace the SYSTEM Hive
Method 2: Restore the SYSTEM File from the SYSTEM.ALT Backup File
Method 3: Reduce the Size of the SYSTEM File
Method 4: Restore the SYSTEM Hive from Backup
Which all sound hunky dorey but I don't have any original bootable CD (the PC doesn't have a floppy drive), so I can't type 'r' to repair!!!!
In my possesion I do have an XP Pro CD, a Win2000 CD and a Win98 CD - my question is can I use these other CD's to try a 'repair' and get into the 'manual' area to try the methods above (the OS is Win Media Edition on the PC)?
When I boot my computer, it tells me it can't load windows because the following file is missing or corrupt:<windows root>system32hal.dllCan i use the "repair console" to copy this file onto the hard drive from a floppy disk? If not, how do I rectify this problem?

I had downloaded one version of linux and was able to see the files on the internal hard drive, but was unable to copy them to a memory stick or external hard drive. Now I've downloaded ubuntu and booted off a memory stick... this time, it's telling me that the internal hard drive has all kinds of bad sectors and won't let me access any of the files on there.
