I have a problem with an .avi file, I think it may have a virus. It was downloaded from an unknow site. While kept in a folder (A) within 'My Documents' folder it greatly slowed any operations whenever I opened folder A to view its contents This .avi file will not delete and can't be moved, comes up with a message -
"Cannot delete '.avi file': It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." This message
comes up even when no programs are opened, its a stand alone home pc so no
other users.
A co-worker cannot locate a folder containing templates for form letters. He has searched for the files, checked other locations and recycle bin. He thinks someone may have moved or deleted it. How can we find/recover the files
I have a PC that had numerous defunct users, some from old defunct workgroups. I thought I'd consolidate. I moved a bunch of files and folders to a current users folder and deleted the defunct files and folders. I did this in Explore, loged in as Administrator, because these defunct users were from a previous defunct workgroups and did not show up in User Accounts/ControlPanel. As administrator I can read and wrtie to these files, but the user can't. I have marked these folders as shared and given permission to do everything to them, but the user that need them still can't write to them. As Administrator, I have assigned him to the powerUsers Group in the Users account/ControlPanel.

I accidentally deleted the sa.exe file in Windows, but i still have the dll, which is sa.exe.exe.dll I just found out this is a stay-alive utility that prevents the crashes of programs, but i also seen something else saying it's spellex a spell-check utility that provides spell checking on several applications, and right clicking spell-check too.
why do people say that they have deleted a file from their computer but if someone has enough knowledge or certain forensic software they can still retrieve this file that was supposably deleted. If they can retrieve it then it is not deleted. and when the file is supposably deleted but still in your computer is there a difference in the space that it takes in hidden areas of your computer. I would imagine that they would be compressed or something else.
Just updated my new hard drive with the back up file from the old one. Backup went fine but when I deleted it, the 5 gig it occupied did not get freed up on the hard drive. Did I need to do something else besides delete it? Is it potentially lurking in another file?
I am still getting used to XP. In WIndows ME, there was a windows empory internet files folder and a windows emp folder that I deleted regularly because IE saved a bunch of unwanted files in there all the time. Where are these folders in XP? I have done a search for them and have found a few different ones but just arent sure which are what. Where should I look, or where can I find them?
Am attempting to delete three old zip/unzip driver folders so I can install updated versions of the drivers, but every time I go to delete, a warning pops-up stating ...."nothing to do"......, then it slowly (crawls, actually) begins, stating..... "deleting from archive". The files are full, so there's obvious data that needs to be removed despite the warning that there's nothing to do. At the speed this thing is deleting, if at all, it will take days. My question is, why can't I do a conventional uninstall/deletion the way most files are deleted, and why is it requiring so much time? (FYI, once this process starts, the only way to stop it is to do a CTRL-ALT-DELETE- just canceling doesn't do a thing), I have to remove thes drivers before installing the new versions. Is there another method of removing these files
Can I recover messages I accidentally deleted in Outlook Express of Windows 2000XP? These messages were in their own file but somehow got moved to a subfile of the Deleted Items folder. In trying to removed the Deleted Items folder the sub-folder went with it. There were a large number of messages I had received via e-mail that I intended to keep.
First I booted from the Windows XP cd because I wanted to format the C drive. I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I didn't FORMAT it, but then when I started up my computer, all the files were gone. So does that mean my files are premanently deleted or can I save the files somehow?.
A way to recover deleted files that were deleted from the recycle bin.Maybe someone has a favorite utility that they've used with success.I am using Windows XP.
I just finally went from core temp 0.94 to 0.95 and I seem to have found a nasty little bug in 0.95. I keep getting BSOD when I start 0.95. Thats kinda messed up to me as 0.94 worked like a charm. I have played with it a little and I know it isn't my system.I keep getting error code c000021a.
My daughter's eMachines PC has XP. She was moving some photos from one folder to another. Now they won't preview or open. The thumbnail images do not show up either. In Properties they do not say "Read Only" or "Hidden" and it will not let me alter anything. It will say "Error Applying Attributes"-"Access is denied".I asked her what happened and she said she was prompted if she wanted to move these "Read Only" files and she clicked "Yes" because she said it has asked her before on some.It lists the titles and the size of the files. The other photos in the folder show their previews and thumbnails, but these just show the generic JEPG icon.
every time I move files they become access denied, I am the sole user & adminstrator, each time I have had to start in safe mode & regain ownership. I have resorted to doing copy file & then deleting original.
Using XP, I have moved the My Documents folder to a new drive "E". Seemed OK, but I was thrown by the fact I still have a "My Documents" folder listed under "Documents and Settings/myusername" In his folder, I also have folders for Cookies, Desktop, Favourites and Start Menu.
Q1. Should I delete this duplicate My Documents folder and or is it correct to leave it there as a copy (according to propertiesit is located on the C drive)
Q2. Should I move the other folders too?
I have also posted seperately a similarly related question about the program Folder
