A co-worker cannot locate a folder containing templates for form letters. He has searched for the files, checked other locations and recycle bin. He thinks someone may have moved or deleted it. How can we find/recover the files

In trying to removed the Deleted Items folder the sub-folder went with it. There were a large number of messages I had received via e-mail that I intended to keep.

While kept in a folder (A) within 'My Documents' folder it greatly slowed any operations whenever I opened folder A to view its contents This .avi file will not delete and can't be moved, comes up with a message -
"Cannot delete '.avi file': It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." This message
comes up even when no programs are opened, its a stand alone home pc so no
other users.
I've searched the internet for a simple way to do this, but it seems it all revolves around paying for the privilege, hence I hope you can help. It was over 8 gigs so when i deleted it, i unfortunately commited the same mistake of pressing the "yes" button again when it asked the files to bypass the recycling bin being permanently deleted from the computer. In fact it happened so fast it seemed like it vaporized. It was hard to believe that over 8 gigs of files were eliminated that fast, whereas usually any big file i would delete would normally take a while for the computer to process

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe files were deleted (and Norton Protected recycle bin emptied) from both the C: (boot drive/OS) and D: drives and when I tried to run System Restore, it gave me an error message, so I assume some of the system files may have been deleted as well. I am not the primary user of this computer and while the computer was functioning after I discovered this, I made the mistake of re-booting the computer and now get a ''NTLDR is missing - press Ctrl + Alt + Delete'' at boot. I have the Sony System recovery discs (no Windows XP disc that I can find) but I don't want to lose any more data and I would still like to try and recover the previously deleted files.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI get a phone call from someone who had the missing NTLDR message. THey said they were on the phone with microsoft for hours. The person outsourced told them to do another install of Windows to get in so they can back up their files. They tell him to install to Windows1 instead of Windows. I guess the smart outsourced agent thought this wouldn't delete any files since my friend told him he has some very important documents on this hard drive. So he installs another Windows and guess what, his documents and settings get overwritten. Looks like these guys really know what they're talking about since any Microsoft person should know this happens no matter where you install Windows

I seriously doubt the worst here, and i have tried about 4 data recovery programs that were only able to detect the very main folder that was deleted but not the more important 2 subfolders inside of it containing the big chunk of the data. I've even been able to detect files that were deleted months ago through these programs, but not the important 8 gigabyte chunk i just deleted an hour ago. By the way i tried scanning both the C rive(main) and the external hard drive and browsing through the :/recycle folders, but to no avail

Her computer was given to her by a friend, but he kept all the OS discs and has subsequently moved away.We do have her serial number.She's running XP Home. I have an XP Pro CD,but I have a feeling that it's not going to help.Does anyone know of a way to get a replacement installation CD? Or if it's possible to repair Home from a Pro CD?

Was doing a Windows install and I mistook a drive for a different drive.In short, I deleted the partition, recreated the partition, but I haven't reformatted yet. The partition was the same size before and after so that shouldn't be a problem. the files should still be there but I don't know how to get at them. I've already tried Recuva, UndeletePlus, Restoration, and a Knoppix boot disk but none of these were able to do anything because of the lack of a file system/boot sector.

My problem is that I have by mistake moved a folder containing thousands of private photos and irreplaceable files into that folder which I can't access anymore. When trying to move my pictures folder back it says that I don't have permission to do that.I have latest Windows xp updates. I think a proper solution would be to change the permission of that folder so I can access it and I don't know how to do that. I am an admin so I should be able to access it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've reinstalled Windows XP SP2 on my old machine. After first restart it told me that there are problems with my D disk's file structure (Windows installation as default - on C disk). I let Windows to check and repair problems on D disk. It took about 30 mins. After done "fixing", windows restarted once more. And what i saw after, was a blank D disk. Almost 250GB of photos, documents, home-made movies and other unrecoverable priceless data were lost... A few hours later, when I calmed down, I've started to download and try variuos file recovery software. But none of it helped me to recover at least one lost file. After week of trying i gave up. I've tried variuos Windows apps, live CDs with recovery tools, Linux apps. None of those helped... So maybe someone has a solution for me, couse I don't know what to try anymore?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI wanted to clean up little bit a HKCU - run, and i started to back up every single value separately but after 2nd I didn't notice that the whole run folder was highlighted so I confirmed a deletion and Oops - now the folder is gone. (the dumb touch pad did it not me).Luckily most of the stuff still works, windows starts normaly, but I lost a volume control throug the keyboard (Sorry I didn't mention it before, it's a laptop intel P4 2Ghz, 2G ram, Xp sp2 pro.) and I am scared what will happen next if I try to install something that requires to put the value in this folder. I tried to create a run folder under the selected HKCU but it keeps placin' a new folder under windows update tree. Any idea how can I save my system from re-install? Is there a way to restore this, I tried system restore but it says there is nothing to restore. I checked the recycle bin and it's not there. Any sugestion is welcome.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am having great difficulty with my current hard drive, a Maxtor 160GB 7200 drive. About a month ago, several folders began randomly turning into gibberish, and when I click on the folder, the amount of data listed is in the Gigabytes, instead of Megabytes. The corrupted folders could not be deleted, nor could the programs be removed. So, three weeks ago, I reinstalled Windows XP and re-formatted the partition on which these corrupted folders were located. For three weeks, things have been just fine. Today, however, when I tried to use Corel Quattro Pro, it would not work. Sure enough, the entire Corel folder has turned into unintelligible goo, and can not be deleted. At first, I thought a virus might be causing this random corruption. However, I now I suspect that this constitutes hard drive corruption, possibly early signs that hard drive failure is around the corner. One bit of information that I think I need to relay is that, in addition to Windows XP, I also run Windows 98 on this computer. None of the 7 partitions are over 20GB, however, so I wouldn't think that Windows 98 would have any trouble recognizing the data.
