I have winxp sp3, legal version, automatic updates.From yesterday, whenever I press CTRL, my default browser launches.I had Chrome, I uninstalled it, but the story goes on with IE. If the browser is turned on, pressing ctrl opens blank page.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm usually pretty proficient in handling typical squirreliness with my computer but this one's a tough one for me to wrap my mind around. Here's my computer specs:Just recently I'd been gone to work and my girlfriend was at home on the computer.She usually goes on myspace, xanga, facebook a lot and generally doesn't stray far from those activities. I got home and she pointed out the computer was acting weird. When I hit ctrl+alt+del, the screen just gets a light blue sheen over it until I click and then it's gone with no sign of the task manager. Also in firefox I cannot use the ctrl keys. The left ctrl key when pressed immediately makes the font size in the window larger and larger and after 2 or 3 presses opens a new tab in firefox. The right ctrl key yesterday was opening a new tab going to gmail and today is doing a variety of things including going back a page and copying text to pages. I can't use any ctrl key combinations in any software without it doing something strange. In Azureus it opens a file's statistics.

Like the title says, everytime i turn my machine on the windows page appears on start and the load bar just keeps going. I left this running for an hour and nothing happened.
I have read tons of stuff and tried loads of stuff and yes you guessed it nothing has sorted it out.
My computer knowledge isnt great so if this requires Bios work or Command prompts i will need some detailed help.

Is there any way to have a default Browser? I want every program that has links to open up in say. Firefox, I have tried setting it as my default browser in the settings option, and in "Set programs access and defaults". It works quite well... But can I get MSN Messenger to open up in that browser? When I click on my e-mails or MSN Space Etc. It opens up in Internet Explorer. Is there ANY way to open it in my default browser?

When I open Internet Explorer, my home page (www.google.com) opens.When it is finished loading, it automatically redirets to yahoo mail login page. The catch is, all my browsers windows that are open will be changed too. If I hit "stop" before the page is loaded, then hit "refresh", this action does not occur. I have Microsoft updates automatically downloade do my computer. I have the latest MacAfee anti-virus on my computer and have run the latest scan. I have run Microsoft beta spy-ware, ad aware and yahoo's version. I am not seeing anything.

View 6 Replies View RelatedOk, so recently i experienced this typing problem where typing took up a bunch of CPU in the task manager and lagged out everything. When i would try to play a game for example; i would press and hold w to walk and my computer would freeze until i let go, stopping all the video and sound. So i went into the computer and took out the CMOS battery for a minute or two put it back in and restarted my computer. NO TYPING PROBLEMS! But then on my next boot up they come back again?

It is connected to a touch screen that reacts as if the image on the screen was correct. When you reboot the start up screens are the correct way up but then it reverts back.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot enter safe mode in Windows XP Home Edition by rebooting and pressing F8. The last thing I did to my computer was add a second hard drive, reboot, and, press F1. When I did that, I saw "entering setup". I looked around, didn't change anything and exited. I have re-installed WinXP and still can't enter safe mode.

I re-installed windows 2000 and tried SP2 and ie6 updates but problem still persists.On pressing key "L" anywhere, it launches outlook express as a side-effect. This is true even when some other application is open and in focus. The opened window shows inbox folder in place of default home screen of outlook express. I have noticed that in folders pane in outlook express, pressing L selects Local Folder and pressing it again selects Inbox. However, in this case the window with inbox is opened out of nowhere. I tried by deleting files from profile that may cause this (Like shortcuts) and also checked with a new user but in vain. One thing I have observed is that when I use on-screen keyboard, L key is working fine. This makes me think that it is not a shortcut recognized by explorer. I checked keyboard with other operating system in my dual-boot configuration and it is working fine there.

When i start pressing keys really fast my hard drive beeps and the computer restarts, but before it restarts and closes teh game, a message comes up about sticky keys, but then it closes out really fast and i have no time to read it and then the computer restarts. View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently formatted my HD and run Partition Magic to create 5 partitions but now every time I reboot, CHKDSK runs to check each drive, but doesn't find any problems. My drives and labels are as follows; O.S.(C), DVD Drive(D), DVD/CD-RW(E), Data(F), Games(G), Video(H), Music(I). I'm running twin WD 250 GB HD in a RAID 1 configuration. 30 GB dedicated to (C) and the rest are split to contain between 50 to 60 GB. I've also adjusted the cluster size to 16K. File system is NTFS and os is Win XP Pro. I haven't installed any antivirus or firewall because I'm not connected to the internet yet. Also no progs running on startup. This is a fresh HD with nothing installed except os and drivers. Partitioning was fairly easy and straight-forward so I'm really scratching my head to figure out what is wrong.
View 4 Replies View RelatedEvery time I open Windows XP, I get a message saying "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" Then it runs a chkdsk.It reports no errors and opens as usual.Then if I try to defrag the disk that is checked, I get a message saying Diskeeper has detected that CHKDSK is scheduled to run. This is due to a user request or because the Operating System has found errors in the file system.I have run Chkdsk on this drive, but no errors have been found.I have not scheduled Chkdsk to run on this drive.If I then try to reboot, the same procedure occurs again and check disk does not report any errors.
View 8 Replies View RelatedChkdsk runs at startup due to me resizing and shifting my NTFS partition to the left. Running "fsutil dirty query C:" returns the message: Volume - C: is Dirty. I know this problem can be solved by running chkdsk but I also know from prior experience that it will cause a lot of problems. I'm not having any problems. Windows XP is running very fast and works just fine. I just know from experience that if I allow chdsk to run that it will mess with my OS.At boot it gives me the option of not allowing chkdsk to run, which I don't. Is there anyway that I can disable chkdsk from running at boot?

Virtually all software programs take time to come up, even little ones like Notepad. Have lots of slowdowns and freeze ups when using the internet, including trying to type in url's. Anytime the computer isn't in use for a little while, starting up again is always very slow with frequent little freeze ups. Lately, even when we first turn the computer on, we get a low on virtual memory warning in the lower right corner. Somebody told me this could be the problem. If so, why would it need more memory now than in the past when it worked ok?We actually deleted lots of files and some software programs not be used, including video games.We used Spybot, Malwarebytes and our anti virus program a few days back and all 3 came up with no problems.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy laptop (windows XP pro) prompts me on start up to press ctlr+alt+del before it allows me to put my username and password to access windows. Now when i press ctrl-alt-del nothing happens so i cant get to the box to enter my log on details and get into windows... This is what I have tried
1. different ctrl-alt-del methods (only one del button so i am assuming that del is broken)
2. plugged in USB keyboard but it wont work (there are no PS2 ports on laptop to use either). I am guessing since windows isnt initiated then USB ports wont respond
4. booting in Safe mode doesnt bypass the ctrl-alt-del screen
5. tried installing a new laptop keyboard but too difficult to get out
6. tried XP recovery but i cant press numbers to select 1:Windows XP so im guessin the number keys dont work either
