But, I'm the administrator of the computer! It is not apart of any network so no one else was using it.The keyboard is also locked so I can't type anything.

Unfortunately, I've made a LOT of changes in the past few days (new programs, a system restore, windows registry cleanup, startup configuration changes, etc.) so I have no idea what caused this.
View 11 Replies View RelatedOn my Toshiba laptop running W-XP SP2 it keeps getting 'locked up'. It locks up on shut down, booting, and launching programs. I had to wipe out my hard disk because I had to use the recover disk that came with this Toshiba junk Right now it is locked up with the Spysweeper screen up an the error message is "THIS PROGRAM CANNOT BE CLOSED BECAUSE IT IS LOCKED BY THE SYSTEM"!!! Got that when I did Ctrl/Alt/Del. When it locks on shut down I get same message, and same when locks on boot. Only way out seems to be UNPLUG!!! I've already lost everything anyways so it don't matter. Is this a TOSHIBA issue or a W-XP Home Edition SP2 issue?

I cannot load Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/Networking, or Safe Mode w/Command Prompt. When I do try to load a Safe Mode, except "Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)" it loads, says it is starting windows and then restarts. I did a system restore on my laptop after recklessly cleaning files off of my hard drive. Since then I can't access my d:/, so I can't reinstall anything, including my internet and Microsoft Office software. If I look in the control panel I can see everything (I didn't lose any personal files), but D: always comes up as D:/RECOVERY, then fiendishly warns me not to look inside (which I haven't).

View 7 Replies View RelatedI’m having problems with my laptop, which started today. Whilst browsing the internet the system locked up, leaving me with no alternative than to hold down the power button until the system turned off. When I turned the computer back on it froze shortly after logging on, before going to a blue screen saying,
‘A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc00000005, 0xEE1A8B3A, 0xF70E97E8, 0x00000000)
Beginning dump of physical memory
Dumping physical memory to disk: xx’
I’ve booted Windows several times and the hex addresses all stay the same. I’m thinking it might be useful to upload the memory dumps, but don’t know how to do this. I have made several small attempts to repair the system. Firstly I started the computer in safe mode and scanned the hard drive using AVG Free, which (surprisingly) found several Trojans and other viruses. This made no difference when starting the computer, so I pressed F8 again when Windows was starting and chose ‘Last Known Good Configuration’ which again made no difference. Finally I started the computer in ‘Safe mode with Command Prompt’ and ran ‘chkdsk’ which found no errors...........
Whenever I press F9 multiple times, my computer freezes, locks up for a bit and it stops locking up after a few seconds.

When i would try to play a game for example; i would press and hold w to walk and my computer would freeze until i let go, stopping all the video and sound. So i went into the computer and took out the CMOS battery for a minute or two put it back in and restarted my computer. NO TYPING PROBLEMS! But then on my next boot up they come back again?

When I did that, I saw "entering setup". I looked around, didn't change anything and exited. I have re-installed WinXP and still can't enter safe mode.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have started facing a strange problem recently. I re-installed windows 2000 and tried SP2 and ie6 updates but problem still persists. On pressing key "L" anywhere, it launches outlook express as a side-effect. This is true even when some other application is open and in focus. The opened window shows inbox folder in place of default home screen of outlook express. I have noticed that in folders pane in outlook express, pressing L selects Local Folder and pressing it again selects Inbox. However, in this case the window with inbox is opened out of nowhere. I tried by deleting files from profile that may cause this (Like shortcuts) and also checked with a new user but in vain. One thing I have observed is that when I use on-screen keyboard, L key is working fine. This makes me think that it is not a shortcut recognized by explorer. I checked keyboard with other operating system in my dual-boot configuration and it is working fine there.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been battling with my computer and not sure what to do anymore. I am having intermittent problems where my computer will go into standby mode while I am working. I have been losing work, of course, and feeling fusterated. I have run every anti-virus and anti-spy program and I believe my computer is free of those sorts of things. but you can never be too sure. However, I continue to have problems and get an error from windows regarding my monitor drivers for the NVIDA software. I tried to ninstall, and then install new drivers and that was a big mess. So I tore them out, and now just let XP figure out which drivers to use. However, I continue to get the NVIDA error from the OS when I start up. I am not sure, though, that this is the root. I don't want to reinstall for fear of getting locked out of the profile again.
I start up, and when its feeling like it-- about every other time. it lets me into my profile. I will think that its going to be a good day, but then my machine is moving as fast as a snail I do the HJT log and find this particular line that improves performance once I delete it. The problem is, however, it always comes back after a few restarts. I don't know how to make it completely away, and I am not really sure of what it is too that is, if that is what is causing my random shut downs..... I looked up these and it seems like a normal system process when something else has caused a glitch is that correct?
In hooking a new Windows 2000 PC up to my wireless home network, I found I could not operate the printer with the new computer. The "new" PC had been used in a family member's office previously and so had been on a different network. So, I entered the home workgroup name on the PC so maybe it would find the printer (yes, I installed the printer on the new PC first). In so doing, I apparently eliminated the former domain name, and now I cannot get past the log in screen.

Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type in your password again".
View 14 Replies View RelatedI ran "cacls C: /P guest:n" in a command prompt. After that, I was unable to access anything. I shutdown and booted from the OEM CD. I ran a repair install. I rebooted and put the CD in to try to finish the repair installation. It was going fine for about 5 minutes. Then I got a fatal error. I looked the error code up and it said that this meant that there were not sufficient permissions to perform the necessary tasks. Now, I can't even boot into Windows so what is the best way to fix this? Maybe resetting the permissions (if so, how)? (By the way, I have already tried cacls in recovery console and copying it onto a flash drive and running it in the recovery console. Neither work. I am dual-booting with Ubuntu on another partition, so if I need to use linux for the repair, feel free to recommend that.)
