I did a system restore on my laptop after recklessly cleaning files off of my hard drive. Since then I can't access my d:/, so I can't reinstall anything, including my internet and Microsoft Office software. If I look in the control panel I can see everything (I didn't lose any personal files), but D: always comes up as D:/RECOVERY, then fiendishly warns me not to look inside (which I haven't).

Everything works fine except when I boot up and following the Sony logo and Intel logo the following message appears "Press F11 for Acronis Startup Recovery Manager. Acronis fatal error Boot drive (partition) not found. Press Enter to try to boot your PC." Pressing enter boots up the PC fine but how can I eliminate the process? I had Acronis on both drives before the crash but it no longer exists.

I was planning to complete a full system reformat, or system recovery as my manufacturer describes it. The PC was shipped with two drive C and D, both being a partition of one hard drive. I also added 3 further partitions to D, which means there are actually 5 drives. The computer manual says that when performing a system recovery, you can select to just recover the C partition, but it says that a recovery will provide an image of the PC's software when shipped, so does this mean it will restore the original partitions and lose my current partitions?

View 14 Replies View RelatedIts been happening for maybe a month now, whenever i put a game CD in the computer, sometimes it runs fine, and sometimes it dosen't, its like a 90/10 chance that it will screw up.Whenever i place a cd and it DOES screw up, here is what happens, first it will make the loading noises, fans get noisy, etc. as Usual, then suddenly, i hear a 'click' noise, a familier noise that i hear when i hit the 'Reset' button on the case.So when i hear the click when i loaded the game up, after a few seconds, the mouse stops moving, and then the sound goes off, and it sounds as if the harddrive is making the same sounds as it does when it restarts but the screen is frozen on what it was last viewing.So, basically, the computer makes restarting-like noises nearly everytime i put a cd in the cdrom drive and freezes, and i have to shut it down w/ the button on the case.

When I bring up utilities for system restore, it shows drive I as the system drive instead of drive C.I can sort of understand why this might happen because I installed a new 200 gig drive 5 months ago and made my old C drive I. My system tells me that C is my boot drive and I am not having any real problems except with restore. Looks like something is wrong in restor's database.

I finally got tire of it just repeatedly cycling through the first part of the boot cycle so I got out my power max floppy and reformatted the HD. Then I reinstalled XP pro. It worked fine for several start-ups and now just goes to a blue screen. Is hp somehow proprietary on how I have to 'restore' the system?

I cant do a sytem restore, dl/run any software tools, and its so slow that the system is pretty much useless. Dell says that they think it is spyware and they can fix me right up for just $49.95. I think I have everything I need backed up, so I was thinking about wiping my hard drive and starting over for free. Could someone walk me through it? Then, could someone point me in the right direction to keep this from happening again.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I start SR I can only see one restore point, the one I made the day after I replaced my hard drive.But now when I try to create a new restore point it allows me to enter the name, then after I click OK I get the message ''System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer , and then run System restore again.''After I restart I run System Restore again and get the same message.
Also, the restore points I made before I replaced my hard drive no longer show up.When I replaced the drive (with a Maxtore 80 gb), I used their MaxBurn program to duplicate everything form the old one to the new one. It boots from the new C drive and runs OK and all my programs are there, but some act strangely. I'm wondering if these programs are looking for some kind of system volume information tho make sure they are still on the original system.
I'm using Win XP Pro SP3. When my files in "My Documents" outgrew my hard drive's capacity a while back I bought a new hard drive and decided to move my "My Documents" onto the new F: drive, leaving everything else on the original hard drive. It seemed like the simplest solution to my problem at the time. The situation does create a few syntax problems revolving around the question "When is the 'My Documents' folder not really the 'My Documents' system folder?" Most of the time I don't have any problems with the arrangement, but there are a couple of anomalies. At present my command line environment variables do not have any easy way to point to "My Documents" because (for example) %userprofile%My Documents points to the folder on c: that used to be the 'My Documents' system folder rather than to the current location of the system folder.
That is not usually a big deal but it may be related to the more frequent problem. A few ill-behaved programs expect to find and store files in %userprofile%My Documents (which is on C: drive) rather than in the actual system folder "My Documents" on F: which makes it harder to find these files when I search for them. Just to 'simplify' the situation I thought about setting a reparse point in the old "My Documents" folder ( %userprofile%My Documents ) that points to the actual system folder (which is F:My Documents ) Tinkering with settings like this has potential to break things in unexpected ways so I thought I'd ask whether there are any obvious problems with the 'solution'. Or are there better ways to keep the user documents on a second hard drive?
i accidentaly deleted my video files and cleaned up drive c and i cant get the files back i tried system restore a few times with no luck i do have the files names under shared video but there 1kb files and a different file type and i cant open them can anyone help me please!

Rebooting the computer a message appears, the volume is locked and error checking cannot be run. The computer then proceeds to reboot my settings. How can the volume be unlocked? With it's various problems, Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not allowed on my computer.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter thinking my computer was running well I made a restore point to that effect, after defragging and using check disc. I continued using my computer and a couple of times rebooted without problems after installing windows updates. The next morning when booting up I was completely locked out at the welcome page, asking me to validate my copy of Windows. This I did over 4 years ago, and would have ticked the box to say yes, unfortunately the mouse locked.
I have put another copy of XP onto my D: drive to get here and write this, but with only 25 days for activation, which I do not want. Has anybody any idea please what has happened. I do have back-ups but they would only work if I reformatted my C: drive which is a lot of bother. I have tried starting in safe mode, last good known configuration, but it always locks at the welcome screen.
I have 2 drives, one with Windows and such, and the other with about 1,000 games that my girlfriend plays. She let her grandson on, unsupervised, and the next thing is a trashed system drive. Unfortunately, there was no way to save it, so I did a format and clean reinstall of XP Home. Goback was on the drive, and there was no way to uninstall it before the reinstall. The reinstall went fine, but the GAME drive is virtually inaccessible. It doesn't show in My Computer, but does show in Admin Tools, Disk Management. However, the drive name is shown as F(F. It should either be D: or F: ( there are 2 optical drives). I can't change the name or drive letter. I get the error "the drive is locked".
I tried Partition Magic, and it will change the info, temporarily. Also, PM shows the drive as *.F It doesn't give any error message, and says the change has been applied, but it obviously hasn't. I searched this forum for "hard drive locked" and followed suggestions that I had not tried previously. The smiley replaced a colon; the entry should read F(F. Sometimes I think I might know what I'm doing, and then I realize, maybe not.
i just took my old hard drive out of my old computer and put in my new comp, but the user profile i was using in old HD is now locked and windows says i have no access to this folder? How can i gain acess to all my files out of this folder now through my new xp?

When I hit F10 upon startup in order to access the system recovery, nothing happens- it boots as it would regularly. I was able to boot up using the CD, and am now in the System Recovery console. As I have one of the small external cases for a laptop drive I installed the HD from the dead beast with the hope I could save the info on it. IT WORKS!! but when I try to copy or view anything in /documents and settings it denies me access. I tried changing the boot order to start on USB deviced to try and boot from it but it doesn't seem to see it.

I have tried to do restore and also recovery with the disc's I burned when I first got my computer, to no avail, a Tech at Best Buy said I may have a spyware called smit fraud on my system and said he could get rid of it for $400.00, I wish I could afford it but I don't even have $4 bucks to my name and my wife refuses to shell it out. I was in a car accident 3 years ago and have lost 70% of the use of my right arm I am unemployed and it is hard for me to do the job I was trained to do which is cooking, I am a Certified Chef of 22 years now I can't even hold a knife. View 11 Replies View RelatedOn my Toshiba laptop running W-XP SP2 it keeps getting 'locked up'. It locks up on shut down, booting, and launching programs. I had to wipe out my hard disk because I had to use the recover disk that came with this Toshiba junk Right now it is locked up with the Spysweeper screen up an the error message is "THIS PROGRAM CANNOT BE CLOSED BECAUSE IT IS LOCKED BY THE SYSTEM"!!! Got that when I did Ctrl/Alt/Del. When it locks on shut down I get same message, and same when locks on boot. Only way out seems to be UNPLUG!!! I've already lost everything anyways so it don't matter. Is this a TOSHIBA issue or a W-XP Home Edition SP2 issue?
