My wife's emachines (T3065) pc seems to have officially died. I have the restore CDs in which I have been trying to restore the XP Operating System. Mscdex.exe says it is already running CDR101 says Not ready reading drive R.

I have tried copying .ini and other files from CD but the boot config is stil off.I have put the HD into my other PC and the data is fine but just unable to get the #2 back up and running. without having to execute it. View 14 Replies View RelatedA little over a year ago I purchased a used IBM Thinkpad laptop from ebay for my wife. It came with Windows 2000 Professional installed and everything worked fine. No CDs or floppies came with the computer. A couple of months later, it was stolen by one of her business associates. It eventually was recovered, but the thief had installed Windows XP along with the OS that was already installed. In trying to remove XP and return the machine to its original state, I somehow managed to eventually not be able to use either OS. As it stands now I have no OS and cannot even access my hard drive.When I boot from a floppy then try to change to C: drive, I get the error message: Invalid media type reading drive c: Abort, Retry, Fail?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a very strange problem...I have a DVD -/+ RW drive that reads CDs fine but when you try to put in a DVD of any kind it does not recognize it...does not matter whether or not the DVD is a retail movie, DVD -/+ R or RW disc, etc. This problem is not with the drive as this is the 3rd unit I've put in and it has behaved the same way...there is some setting or function within Windows XP that is causing this problem...all 3 of the drives work just fine in other machines. Does anyone know where this type of problem could reside within XP?
View 4 Replies View RelatedLately I have been experiencing a temporary slowdown/freeze and I notice that the hd light is blinking. I can be moving the mouse across the page, for example, when it will start responding erratically or stop. As this is happening the hd light blinks even though nothing is being saved or opened. I have disabled indexing, run virus checks and adware and spyware removal tools. I do have a wireless router attached but i haven't checked to see if it happens with my laptop also.

When I bring up utilities for system restore, it shows drive I as the system drive instead of drive C.I can sort of understand why this might happen because I installed a new 200 gig drive 5 months ago and made my old C drive I. My system tells me that C is my boot drive and I am not having any real problems except with restore. Looks like something is wrong in restor's database.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an HP pavillion xf328 laptop and of late it refuses to boot.I could not sart it in safe mode or any of the other choices offered at stert-up. I finally got tire of it just repeatedly cycling through the first part of the boot cycle so I got out my power max floppy and reformatted the HD. Then I reinstalled XP pro. It worked fine for several start-ups and now just goes to a blue screen. Is hp somehow proprietary on how I have to 'restore' the system?

I cant do a sytem restore, dl/run any software tools, and its so slow that the system is pretty much useless. Dell says that they think it is spyware and they can fix me right up for just $49.95. I think I have everything I need backed up, so I was thinking about wiping my hard drive and starting over for free. Could someone walk me through it? Then, could someone point me in the right direction to keep this from happening again.

I did a system restore on my laptop after recklessly cleaning files off of my hard drive. Since then I can't access my d:/, so I can't reinstall anything, including my internet and Microsoft Office software. If I look in the control panel I can see everything (I didn't lose any personal files), but D: always comes up as D:/RECOVERY, then fiendishly warns me not to look inside (which I haven't).

Tried to use F8 safe mode start without success. Have system recovery dvd. Placed in drive. Turned off machine. Turned on. No screen, just black. Hear fan and drive spinning.Checked monitor and see the Analog/Digital message on the screen, (seems to be working.) This is the limit of my knowledge. Any ideas on how to get the recovery disk to be seen by the computer? Help Juscause (I despartely need it). ps, not worried about the data on the computer, but I would like to recovery if possible.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I start SR I can only see one restore point, the one I made the day after I replaced my hard drive.But now when I try to create a new restore point it allows me to enter the name, then after I click OK I get the message ''System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer , and then run System restore again.''After I restart I run System Restore again and get the same message.
Also, the restore points I made before I replaced my hard drive no longer show up.When I replaced the drive (with a Maxtore 80 gb), I used their MaxBurn program to duplicate everything form the old one to the new one. It boots from the new C drive and runs OK and all my programs are there, but some act strangely. I'm wondering if these programs are looking for some kind of system volume information tho make sure they are still on the original system.
I understand the need for system restore to be enabled on the C: drive. But should it be enabled on the d: drive/recovery partition?

When my files in "My Documents" outgrew my hard drive's capacity a while back I bought a new hard drive and decided to move my "My Documents" onto the new F: drive, leaving everything else on the original hard drive. It seemed like the simplest solution to my problem at the time. The situation does create a few syntax problems revolving around the question "When is the 'My Documents' folder not really the 'My Documents' system folder?" Most of the time I don't have any problems with the arrangement, but there are a couple of anomalies. At present my command line environment variables do not have any easy way to point to "My Documents" because (for example) %userprofile%My Documents points to the folder on c: that used to be the 'My Documents' system folder rather than to the current location of the system folder.
That is not usually a big deal but it may be related to the more frequent problem. A few ill-behaved programs expect to find and store files in %userprofile%My Documents (which is on C: drive) rather than in the actual system folder "My Documents" on F: which makes it harder to find these files when I search for them. Just to 'simplify' the situation I thought about setting a reparse point in the old "My Documents" folder ( %userprofile%My Documents ) that points to the actual system folder (which is F:My Documents ) Tinkering with settings like this has potential to break things in unexpected ways so I thought I'd ask whether there are any obvious problems with the 'solution'. Or are there better ways to keep the user documents on a second hard drive?
i accidentaly deleted my video files and cleaned up drive c and i cant get the files back i tried system restore a few times with no luck i do have the files names under shared video but there 1kb files and a different file type and i cant open them can anyone help me please!

I can not get the restore to complete and I can not get the undo to fully complete. Is this not working fully because I am not hooked up to my external hard drive? I don't know where to start with this but my PC is running so slow. It takes a long time for the PC to load when it first turns on. I have alot of useless programs running in the backround and I have no clue what they are for or how to turn them off. Alot of times my computer has a hard time running 2 programs together like AOL and MS Word.I want to delete a bunch of useless programs ( other people use my computer in my household too) and I do not know where to start for that either, I do not want to accidentally get rid of what my computer needs to operate and I am about to toss this thing into the trash. (well, I am just really frustrated). Anyway my sister told me about this site and said how helpful everyone is, and that her computer is running so much better because of comming to this forum.
View 7 Replies View RelatedYesterday I got a notice from microsoft that a critical update was ready to install. I downloaded the update after closing all other open windows. After the installation was complete it restarted the computer after which my compter would not completly boot up. I had to boot in safe-mode and do a system restore to get it working right. Today I have the same notice so I went to the windows update page, and saw the update was there. I didn't download it because of what happened before. So I went to my installed update history and it said it was successfully updated. I looked at the update again and it said the update was 0 kbs. Can you tell me what happened and why now the up date says 0 kps to be installed?

It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I noticed that my XP and Norton goback programs are monitering my old F: NOT MY new C: How do I get ''XP restore'' to moniter my new Cdrive not my oldF drive? Same question for Norton Goback. I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. View 7 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.
