The files were deleted (and Norton Protected recycle bin emptied) from both the C: (boot drive/OS) and D: drives and when I tried to run System Restore, it gave me an error message, so I assume some of the system files may have been deleted as well. I am not the primary user of this computer and while the computer was functioning after I discovered this, I made the mistake of re-booting the computer and now get a ''NTLDR is missing - press Ctrl + Alt + Delete'' at boot. I have the Sony System recovery discs (no Windows XP disc that I can find) but I don't want to lose any more data and I would still like to try and recover the previously deleted files.

I deleted the partition on my External Hard Drive that held my backup files. I can see the files using Recover My Files. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing and are there any other options or software that I should research/explore?

When I used the xp home edition System Configuration Utility { SRU} it deleted all my system restore points. Not only did the SRU not solve the problem, but I could then not use the system restore facility which may have solved the problem . I have downloaded nothing but an Ad-Aware update since I lost all my system restore points. Can these deleted system restore points be recovered?

I accidentally deleted my entire "My Music" folder from the "My Documents" folder after moving a bunch of files from it to an external hard drive. It was permanently deleted - did not go to the recycle bin first. System Restore did not bring it back.

I meant to delete Windows messenger, but ended up deleting Outlook and my internet explorer. I tried system restore, but that did not work. I am able to get onto the internet with exlporer through other programs on my computer, but the main explorer icon is missing from my desktop and startup toolbar on the bottom left of my screen. I'm most concerned about outlook as there was a rather large mailing list there.I'm not very techie, so please answer in simple terms.

I'm at work, and I left my computer to go to eat lunch. For some reason, when I returned all of my files in My Documents on my local drive were automatically deleted. Does anyone know why this could have possibly occured? No one else had access to my computer while I was gone. I am using Windows XP.

I just recently deleted a folder that i wasn't supposed to delete inside my EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Inside that folder were 2 other very important sub folders. It was over 8 gigs so when i deleted it, i fortunately commited the same mistake of pressing the "yes" button again when it asked the files to bypass the recycling bin being permanently deleted from the computer. In fact it happened so fast it seemed like it vaporized. It was hard to believe that over 8 gigs of files were eliminated that fast, whereas usually any big file i would delete would normally take a while for the computer to process. I seriously doubt the worst here, and i have tried about 4 data recovery programs that were only able to detect the very main folder that was deleted but not the more important 2 subfolders inside of it containing the big chunk of the data. I've even been able to detect files that were deleted months ago through these programs, but not the important 8 gigabyte chunk i just deleted an hour ago. By the way i tried scanning both the C rive(main) and the external hard drive and browsing through the :/recycle folders, but to no avail

My norton anti-virus said that some files were mssing. It said that if I restored my computer to an earlier date that this should correct the problem. My computer has restore dates so I picked one from the previous day. When my computer re-boted it said that it was not able to restore to an earlier date because some files maybe corrupted. Said to restate the computer and trying restoring again. I did but had same results. Any restore date I pick, it says it is unable to restore.

Is it possible to get rid of the backed up files that System Restore uses to restore. Is this confusing? Would just turning off System Restore and turning it on again get rid of the files System Restore uses as the 'old' files? What would work if thats not the case. Should I make myself clearer or do you get it.

We have a Dell Inspiron 6000, and it won't boot Windows XP, giving me the message system32configsystem is missing or corrupt. I've gone through a number of steps to recover, including using Windows XP startup disk to go into Recovery console, following MS knowledge base articles, running chkdsk, etc. What I've found out is that the "system" file from both windowssystem32config and from windows epair is gone.

What are the recommendations for "Temporary Internet Files".In large environments should we default the size limit? The default settings is normally huge as disk drives are so big.Users end up with 10s of thousands of files in this folder than can take 20 minutes to clean out. Many IE issues are also resolved by deleting temp internet files. We default the setting "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" on all systems but this does not seem to always delete everything.

My pc is running Windows XP Home SP1, and in an attempt to clean out the tenga virus I used AVG Free Edition. I clicked 'heal' when it ran across instances of the virus in my exe files, but it seems to have deleted a few things. In the middle of the session Windows logged off and required me to enter my password for my user account (it doesn't have a pw) and would log off every time I tried to log on

I used Regseeker *sigh* and now my slave drive is not detected. It does not show up in the device manager list. What may I have removed to cause this? I think Regseeker backed up the registry files I deleted. I tried to restore the files and received an error...
If any more details are needed let me know.

Ok I have run into a major problem. First of all I entered 256 DIMM RAM into my motherboard recently and when I booted up, It said "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
/Windows/System32/Config/System
I tried taking the RAM out and the same happens. One source said it could be the PSU, power, but this is doubtful because I unplugged all the extra stuff I could but the same happens.
Taking advice from another source, I took my XP Disc and Booted from it in hope to repair missing/corrupt files. This did no good, It deleted the "corrupt" files, and couldn't find the same files (such as dplayx.dll, dosx.exe. dos869.fon, dmdskmgr.dll, etc.) So now I think these files are gone so when I tried to boot up after this it restarts or shuts down when it reaches the Windows XP loading screen. I tried booting from the CD once again but this time an error message appeared saying:

By default, Windows XP keeps a backup of system files in the System Volume Information folder. This can eat up valuable space on your hard drive. If you don't want Windows to back up your system files:1. Open the Control Panel2. Double-click on system3. Click the System Restore tab4. Check "Turn off System Restore on all drives"5. Hit Apply6. You may now delete the System Volume Information folder.Warning! If you turn this off you will not be able to use Windows System Restore to restore your system in case of failure.

Recently I opened up my computer to take the dust out of it as I have before. I hadent done so in a long time so there was some caked on dust on some components. I took the RAM out an cleaned it, re-installed it. I also took my vidoe card out because the heat sink had been cloged with dust aswell. After putting everything back and restarting my computer I recived this msg before windows start up. Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEMand it followed with instruction to use the xp setup disk to repair the problem. so I threw the windows CD in, and tried to repair however the program tells me I have no hard drive installed. Which I do since my computer is 3 years old now and has been working fine. I hadent changed any bios settings, I never disconnected the hard dirve either.

First I booted from the Windows XP cd because I wanted to format the C drive. I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I didn't FORMAT it, but then when I started up my computer, all the files were gone. So does that mean my files are premanently deleted or can I save the files somehow?.

I have window XP SP2 installed on my laptop. I also use InterVideo WinDVD Creator for video editing. Recently when I try to import video file into my application, my laptop, processing percentage goes up to 98%, and the application just freezes up. I also tried the Microsoft movie maker software and I get the same result. I was wondering if I need to reinstall the application or there is something that my laptop is missing. The application was functioning fine until 2 days ago, and since then I haven't installed any other application.

I have XP Home version and have had some unusual issue wth System Restore. When I bring up utilities for system restore, it shows drive I as the system drive instead of drive C.I can sort of understand why this might happen because I installed a new 200 gig drive 5 months ago and made my old C drive I. My system tells me that C is my boot drive and I am not having any real problems except with restore. Looks like something is wrong in restor's database.
