My pc is running Windows XP Home SP1, and in an attempt to clean out the tenga virus I used AVG Free Edition. I clicked 'heal' when it ran across instances of the virus in my exe files, but it seems to have deleted a few things. In the middle of the session Windows logged off and required me to enter my password for my user account (it doesn't have a pw) and would log off every time I tried to log on
View 2 RepliesWhen I look with the Explore facility the size of all my directories in C: I found roughly 8.3 GB, When I look at the used space with Property on C: I found 26.2 GB or 3 times more ! The remaining free space si 1.5 GB.I cannot understand why.I have deleted all the temp files, try to delete the maximum unnecessary
files but I now cannot go much further so I cannot defragment for instance and I suppose I am going into a wall soon if I do not act quickly.
Did something really stupid the other day. Was doing a Windows install and I mistook a drive for a different drive.In short, I deleted the partition, recreated the partition, but I haven't reformatted yet. The partition was the same size before and after so that shouldn't be a problem. the files should still be there but I don't know how to get at them. I've already tried Recuva, UndeletePlus, Restoration, and a Knoppix boot disk but none of these were able to do anything because of the lack of a file system/boot sector.

I've gone through a number of steps to recover, including using Windows XP startup disk to go into Recovery console, following MS knowledge base articles, running chkdsk, etc. What I've found out is that the "system" file from both windowssystem32config and from windows epair is gone.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe files were deleted (and Norton Protected recycle bin emptied) from both the C: (boot drive/OS) and D: drives and when I tried to run System Restore, it gave me an error message, so I assume some of the system files may have been deleted as well. I am not the primary user of this computer and while the computer was functioning after I discovered this, I made the mistake of re-booting the computer and now get a ''NTLDR is missing - press Ctrl + Alt + Delete'' at boot. I have the Sony System recovery discs (no Windows XP disc that I can find) but I don't want to lose any more data and I would still like to try and recover the previously deleted files.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOk I have run into a major problem. First of all I entered 256 DIMM RAM into my motherboard recently and when I booted up, It said "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
/Windows/System32/Config/System
I tried taking the RAM out and the same happens. One source said it could be the PSU, power, but this is doubtful because I unplugged all the extra stuff I could but the same happens.
Taking advice from another source, I took my XP Disc and Booted from it in hope to repair missing/corrupt files. This did no good, It deleted the "corrupt" files, and couldn't find the same files (such as dplayx.dll, dosx.exe. dos869.fon, dmdskmgr.dll, etc.) So now I think these files are gone so when I tried to boot up after this it restarts or shuts down when it reaches the Windows XP loading screen. I tried booting from the CD once again but this time an error message appeared saying:
i accidentaly deleted my video files and cleaned up drive c and i cant get the files back i tried system restore a few times with no luck i do have the files names under shared video but there 1kb files and a different file type and i cant open them can anyone help me please!

I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I didn't FORMAT it, but then when I started up my computer, all the files were gone. So does that mean my files are premanently deleted or can I save the files somehow?.

Since then Printers have dissappeared , all audio has gone , icons in add remove programs have changed also half of the prgramms arent on the list , yet theyre still on the taskbar , tried command prompt fom accessories and couldnt open it (shortcut tab in command prompt properties gives target type as : This is not a valid shortcut) and its the only icon in accessories that has changed (modified Wed 11 July 2007 , 5:45:59PM) , print spooler services wont start , cant uninstall canon printer because of this message and , unfortunately the list goes on . did virus and spyware scans with trend micro with no result , also sent hiackthis logs for analysis with no result .

I was running AVG anti virus. Now I removed AVG and installed Microsoft supplied security essential software. View 20 Replies View RelatedBesides the usual TEMP files and Temporary Internet Files (which, by the way, I have on a RAM disk, so they are automatically deleted), I wonder if the log files created by installations can be deleted. I have dozens like KB890923.log created during windows update, as well as the windowsupdate.log itself - fast approaching 3Mb. Would deleting these affect future updates? I also have several 3Mb+ CDF files - two of which current and with names like {000-001-A0F12...}.cdf and .bak, but others which apparently haven't been modified for 3 years, with names like Ctdv10k1.cdf, Ctdv10k2.cdf and Ctdvaudy.cdf - I imagine these files contain info about the multimedia devices and drivers installed - if I delete the old ones and keep the recent ones, am I safe?

When i turned the PC back on again i had lost all the files, pictures, internet history and word documents off my user side of the PC, i checked the other user area and the the files and folders are still intact. The thing that is puzzling me is the fact whenever i save a file/picture/document to my desktop and subsequently turn off the pc after use. It seems to automatically delete the file/picture/document off my desktop and is no were to be found on countless searches i've done on all my harddrives.

Files which are being deleted are flashed so quickly that I can't determine what they are. Afterwards there is some corruption, the extent of which I haven't determined, except that my Connection Settings for MSN9 Dial-up are clobbered, and I can't get online. I've been successfully recovering from this situation by doing a System Restore, which has been working well for the past two months, but I need to determine what can be done to resolve the problem.

And when I go to recycle bin properties c: drive is just not there. I can see my d: and g: drive but the c: drive is just not there. Does anybody know what the problem might be, and how to fix it?

I have fixed the problem temporarily by renaming the c: Recycle folder and then letting Windows create a new bin, then deleting the renamed folder. This lasts for a day or two then the problem returns. I'm looking for a more permanent fix short of reformatting.

I think one of my kids may have delete some criticle files.i found a bunch of family jpegs and 2 cab files in the recycle bin. I restored all the files but have been having slow performance. I am unable to send large emails without getting memory errors if i try to access Device Manager i get the following error:MMC cannot open the file c:windowssystem32devmgmnt.msc. This may because the file does not exist, is not an MMC console, or was created by a later version of MMC. This may also be because you do not have sufficient access rights to the file. I have adminstrator rights and have tried logging in as another admiinistrator. I've reinstalled SP2 but that didn't help. Short of reinstalling XP (which would be a PITA)

tells me that I have the same amount of capacity on first partition before I deleted and moved files. I have gotten rid of over 30g of files. Where is my free space
I have an WD 80G HD which showed used and free space accurately. I just deleted 2 files about 15 gigs each, but it still reports the same free space as before I deleted the files. This happend also on a partition and I had to reformat that to restore proper free space.

When I try and empty Deleted file I get an error message saying they can not be deleted and there may be some damaged section on the main drive. It then says I should run Scan Disk or similar.
There is no ScanDisk but I went control Panel, c drive, properties and ran Ckdisk.
It takes a while to run and I have done it several times, as well as Disk Cleanup
