I'm at work, and I left my computer to go to eat lunch. For some reason, when I returned all of my files in My Documents on my local drive were automatically deleted. Does anyone know why this could have possibly occured? No one else had access to my computer while I was gone. I am using Windows XP.
View 5 RepliesI just recently deleted a folder that i wasn't supposed to delete inside my EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. Inside that folder were 2 other very important sub folders. It was over 8 gigs so when i deleted it, i fortunately commited the same mistake of pressing the "yes" button again when it asked the files to bypass the recycling bin being permanently deleted from the computer. In fact it happened so fast it seemed like it vaporized. It was hard to believe that over 8 gigs of files were eliminated that fast, whereas usually any big file i would delete would normally take a while for the computer to process. I seriously doubt the worst here, and i have tried about 4 data recovery programs that were only able to detect the very main folder that was deleted but not the more important 2 subfolders inside of it containing the big chunk of the data. I've even been able to detect files that were deleted months ago through these programs, but not the important 8 gigabyte chunk i just deleted an hour ago. By the way i tried scanning both the C rive(main) and the external hard drive and browsing through the :/recycle folders, but to no avail

View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed 'Virtual CD 5.0.6' on my desktop I installed 10 virtual drives (labelled drive G to P inclusive) I have an external hard drive (labelled 'Local Disk: L) which was turned off when i installed Virtual CD.When i turned on the external HD it did not show in My Computer (presumably because i had allocated drive L as a virtual drive I have uninstalled Virtual CD (and all 10 virtual drives) but still do not get my External HD icon showing in 'My Computer'When i go into device manager the Maxtor External HD is showing. And when i go to the 'Unplug Eject Hardware' icon on my tool bar the HD shows as a USB Mass Storage Device (but without a letter)

When I execute the ipconfig /all command it doesnt list anything and Local Area Connection is missing from my network connections. What happened and more importantly how do I fix this. I tried restoring my computer to several different dates within the last half week and I still get the same problem when restoring to all those dates.
First I booted from the Windows XP cd because I wanted to format the C drive. I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I didn't FORMAT it, but then when I started up my computer, all the files were gone. So does that mean my files are premanently deleted or can I save the files somehow?.

and 74.5gm on local disk ( D ).
Whenever I open up My Computer and browse Local C drive, it takes at least 10 seconds to open up a single folder. I did chkdsk /f /r thing and found no errors on my C drive. I am also possitive that my PC is malware free.

I was running AVG anti virus. Now I removed AVG and installed Microsoft supplied security essential software. The first time I launch any instance of Windows explorer and click the + next to "my computer" it takes about 3 minutes to respond - any subsequent browsing in that explorer window is fine. If I were to launch another windows explorer window - exact same behavior. If I go to save a file fom any app and I want to browse to a specific location - same process 3 minute wait. If I type the locations in lieu of browsing for them, no delay at all - only if browsing.

The dvdrw is set as master on secondary and its slave is the cdrw. when i go to rearrage the drive letters, the cdrw doesnt show up though it shows up when i click on "my computer"

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Computer which operates on XP Service Pack 2 and has a Maxtor 1TB external Hard Drive hooked up. We do a lot of Video Editing (programs such as DV Storm, Vegas etc.) and up until yesterday the external came up as Local Disk E, but it became unplugged whilst the Editing programs were running.It now it comes up as Local Disk (I) but the problem is the Edit programs doesn't recognise any of the files (avi., mpg etc.) that are on the drive (comes up as 'invalid path'), and nor does it show them in their previous format.
