Whenever I open up My Computer and browse Local C drive, it takes at least 10 seconds to open up a single folder. I did chkdsk /f /r thing and found no errors on my C drive. I am also possitive that my PC is malware free.
View 14 RepliesA laptop has 5 mapped drives which are only used on the office. Offline files is not an option. When a user on the road clicks on a mapped drive by mistake, the explorer window locks up while it tries to find it.
Instead of doing something sensible like taking the explorer window to C: drive or desktop, it goes to the next drive letter. Of course this is also unavailable. So the machine is essentially unusable for about 5 minutes if the user mis-clicks once.
I'm having windows XP. My problem is that when i double-click on local drives in my computer, they open in a new window. This irritates me a lot as it consumes a lot of time and also an unnecessary window is opened. This might be a setting change or something else 2.....not sure. Anyways, i'll like to know how to make it normal, i.e. to make it open in the same old window.

The first time I launch any instance of Windows explorer and click the + next to "my computer" it takes about 3 minutes to respond - any subsequent browsing in that explorer window is fine. If I were to launch another windows explorer window - exact same behavior. If I go to save a file fom any app and I want to browse to a specific location - same process 3 minute wait. If I type the locations in lieu of browsing for them, no delay at all - only if browsing.

An error would appear saying "Windows cannot find 'resycled/boot.com". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."I looked up my error online and followed the instruction of someone (probably shouldn't have), where I deleted the "boot.com" in my Registry Editor.However, now, whenever I attempt to open my Local Disk by double-clicking, instead of getting the "Window cannot find...." error, I now get: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. The dvdrw is set as master on secondary and its slave is the cdrw. when i go to rearrage the drive letters, the cdrw doesnt show up though it shows up when i click on "my computer"

I have Norton's ghost 9.0 and I have backed up an Image of my c Drive to my E drive and I need to know what else I need to do to make this a smooth swap and as far as I know it's not possible to do this drive installation or upgrade with out my restoration Cd's for my operating system.

Soon my computer started randomly shutting down on me and a blue screen comes up. It pretty much says i have some errors and i should check CHKDSK/ F to see if i had any corrupition on my files.. Well i didn't exactly get it so i googled the stuff. I came to the conclusion that my computer has A LOT of computer errors. (use Regcure free trial) even though it couldn't delete.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Computer which operates on XP Service Pack 2 and has a Maxtor 1TB external Hard Drive hooked up. We do a lot of Video Editing (programs such as DV Storm, Vegas etc.) and up until yesterday the external came up as Local Disk E, but it became unplugged whilst the Editing programs were running.It now it comes up as Local Disk (I) but the problem is the Edit programs doesn't recognise any of the files (avi., mpg etc.) that are on the drive (comes up as 'invalid path'), and nor does it show them in their previous format.

I have no idea whether it corrected anything or whether everything turned up fine.How can I have it wait for me to view the results? Or where can I find the results at?Is there a way to run chkdsk in XP without rebooting? What happens if I attempt this in safe mode?

My pc was working fine, I believe my mother may have downloaded a virus but avast didn't automatically stop it so I don't think that would have anything to do with the problem. She shut the computer down for the night and the next day went to get on and when it starts up after it shows a dell splash screen saying push F2 for setup and F12 for Boot loader. it goes to a black screen that looks like some thing you ssee when the computer doesn't have an operating system. So I rebooted and hit F2, it sad entering setup and went straight to the black screen. It would not let me into bios. I decided that it may be the hard drive so I took it downstarirs to my other pc and plugged it in an I was able to browse the files on ubuntu. I thought I would test something so I grabbed the Ubuntu Live cd and put it in the computer upstairs, this time when I pushed F2 it went into bios, I set it to boot from cd and restarted, Ubuntu loaded and I am currently using it to type this post. the computer is running off of the Live cd only there is no hard drive plugged into it. Before I typed this but after the first time i got the computer to boot with ubuntu I reinstalled the hard drive. and with the computer still set to boot from cd first it went to the black screen and i could no longer get into bios untill i removed the hard drive.

She walked away from her computer for awhile, and when she came back there was a black screen on it saying basically that it couldn't find any of the devices that are actually attached to the computer i.e. hard drive, CD-ROM. It also said boot record not found. So I decided to have her try the Windows Recovery Console to try and help fix the boot.ini file. Well, when she typed in the command, it didn't work and said invalid entry or system drive not found.

It takes about an hour and then it finishes up and says "CHKDSK finished, the drive is clean.", but then it freezes there and I can't click out of it. I have to hold the button in to reboot and everytime the computer goes on an infinite loop of CHKDSK and I can never get past the last page where it says it's done.I really need to use my computer, but I haven't been able to anything with it for about 4 days. I tried using safemode and it froze on that too.

OK,i need some help here,after changing desktop casing,I noticed that my 2nd IDE Hard drive/HD is not on "My Computer",check on the Device manager HD is present and when i tried to see the details of my HD on Disk Management HD is not present,so I've rebooted HD is present in BIOS.Things I did:1.Fix windows using recovery console2.Connect/reconnect cables3.Check if HD is still working(100% sure it's working)4.Updated driversAdditional info's"HD is Seagate Barracuda(Master-Slave set up), OS Windows XP sp3**Please note that i can't see the HD on my disk management like any other people would do to fix this problem***If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know. I'm going to attempt trying the drive on a different IDE hannel, and see if that works.

Without finding a way into it, I can't tell you much else. The only thing I downloaded today was HJT so I could post a log on the other thread I have up. fell asleep on the couch, and when I awoke, there was a lovely blue screen with some gibberish about "if this is the first time you have seen this screen, restart" and when I did...BLACK SCREEN and this horrendous clicking noise coming from the lower right-hand side of the unit. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS 400 and I'm running off of a 500 gb barracuda harddrive. Here's my problem. When I try to boot up my computer I got the following error a second or two after the windows logo shows up "A Problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer." The error code is STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203,0x85D97A98, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000) When I insert my windows disc, I get the following error "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer". I searched online and attempted to integrate my harddrive drivers onto my windows disc. This is the source from which I got my drivers http://support.dell.com/support/down...&fileid=173456. I then proceed to use a program called Nlite to create a new windows disc, and burnt that disc using a program called imgburner. When I use that disc and press F6 during set up I get the following message "Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system, or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter.
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen starting my computer, I have started getting a "Hard Drive Not Found" error on the black screen just as the pc starts booting up. I've not written down all the details, but I see the MAC address displayed and a cursor blinks just after the letters DHCP, there is something about "boot filename not received", then "Hard Drive not found" and then it defaults to the Windows boot screen and will boot up fine. The pc seems to run normal once up...but, I'm somewhat concerned about a "Hard Drive Not Found" error. It just doesn't sound good. I'm going to try to get more specifics as to what I'm seeing on the boot screens, but wondered if anyone here might have some suggestions as to what my issue is?
My pc specs should show in my signature. Also, I recently upgraded my graphics card, but that's the only hardware I've been playing with lately. Don't know if that would make any difference because I wasn't getting any trouble until now and that graphics card has been in about a week already.
I recently got myself another hard drive, that I wanted to install in my computer. From before, the computer contained a hard drive and a CD-burner. I do not have instructions on how to set the jumpers on the new hard drive to make it master or slave, so I had to try my way. I figured how to make it master, so the present configuration is that this new hard drive is secondary master, and the CD-burner is secondary slave. BIOS recognizes this, but unfortunately Windows does not seem to find any of the devices on the secondary controller with this configuration.

I insert the XP CD to repair XP - No Go. I insert the XP CD to do a fresh install - it tells me to format my hard drive. But I need the data on there. Never happened before - and I am lost.
