Is there a way to easily restore the files that were in a user account that was deleted such as in "my document" and the destop of that user name? Must restore, might have months of baby photos that are lost.
View 6 RepliesI tried to make a Limited user account.I went to control panel -> user accounts and when I tried to create the account the Limited option was grayed out.I could not make it. So I created an administrator account anyways. I than switched to that new account (called it 2) and while inside that account (2) I went back to user accounts in control panel and than I was able to make a new account with limited access.So the problem now is here, when I try to log off from this account (2) I was unable to go back to my original account!! The account I was using before I made the limited account and before I even made 2. I want to go back to the other account because it has all my programs, desktop, favorites and other things. How do I go back to my original account while still having another account as limited? (I don't need the other account, the one I called 2)

I can retreive the files etc stored in the 'my documents' folder as that folder is still available in 'Documents & Settings' I realy want to log in to my old user account which ,incidentally,was not password protected.

Then after i restarted my original account was missing and I was like wtf! My files are all gone now.The original account name was Administrator. I noted under the Documents and Settings, there are 2 John Smith, they are: 1)John Smith and 2)John Smith.JS I think the first one is the original one because the date modified was a couple of months ago. I deleted the old one, and a window popped up that gave me the option to save all of that user's files to a desktop folder (named after the deleted user account) on the new user account' Desktop, so I chose that option. The file never appeared and now I can't find any of the files!! I've searched for specific file names and I haven't come up with anything.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just moved in to my buddy from work, and decided to put a pass on my PC, since a lot of people go thru the house on weekends. I set up an account, gave it admin privileges, but when setup asked: "would you like to give that account access to files?" (or some similar question) I selected NO. When account loaded I couldn't get access to any of my files! The problem now is that I can't delete that new account, because it's the only account! I tried setting up another one with administrator privileges, but it doesn't ask that question anymore (would you like to give that account access to files?), so I can't get access? Do you know a solution, or a step towards getting access to files back?
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe files were deleted (and Norton Protected recycle bin emptied) from both the C: (boot drive/OS) and D: drives and when I tried to run System Restore, it gave me an error message, so I assume some of the system files may have been deleted as well. I am not the primary user of this computer and while the computer was functioning after I discovered this, I made the mistake of re-booting the computer and now get a ''NTLDR is missing - press Ctrl + Alt + Delete'' at boot. I have the Sony System recovery discs (no Windows XP disc that I can find) but I don't want to lose any more data and I would still like to try and recover the previously deleted files.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI built a computer for my mother a few years ago, and used Windows Pro Black edition for her OS. It's been fine, have had no problems until she somehow deleted some detrimental user account files. The only user account that was enabled at the time was the admin account, which is the one she used. The computer boots to the Windows splash, but then an alert pops up telling me that the user files for admin cannot be located and logs me into a temporary user account. The first thing I tried was copying all the folders in the admin user account folder in docs and settings, and creating a new account and pasting those folders into it. I named the account "Janet" and deleted the admin account.
This worked somewhat. I boot into the splash screen, and still get the same error message, but then I get an option to log in under a new user account. I can then enter "Janet" and it tries to load. However, it restarts, and I can only load the user account in safe mode. I have tried to do a system restore, but it tells me that it was unsuccessful no matter which date I try to use. (Probably because I deleted the admin account, like an idiot, before I tried to restore.) Is there a way to find out how to get the computer to stop trying to load "Admin" as the default user account and to load "Janet" instead? I can't find a setting for that anywhere. If it was regular XP Pro, I know I could try using the recovery console on the disk, but this is Black Edition, and although I have the CD still, I don't want to wipe the OS off the HD if there is no recovery console for Black. Would a regular XP CD work to repair this?

I can look at the files on the HDD I have in the caddy but I do no have permission to open or copy/paste these photos or any other files under the user account I was using as I had a password on this account

Once I got it home, however, I discovered that when I tried to install the drivers for my wireless adapter, the InstallShield Wizard would come up and extract the files from the CD and then go away and nothing would happen. When I went to the Windows update site, it would not down load the activeX control to check my computer for needed updates. It did the same thing. It would show that it downloaded the file and then nothing would happen. I talked to a local computer shop and they said they have had a lot of trouble with "broken" Windows Installers lately. So I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded the updated Windows Installer (as they suggested) and this did not change anything.

A friend wanted to buy it so I purchased a copy of Windows XP so they'd have their own license, but instead of rebuilding the box, I wiped all the pertinent programs and info they didn't have licenses for and changed the license number to theirs. The problem is, I want to change the user account name under c:documents and settings to reflect the new name.I have created a new ADMIN account, logged in as this account and renamed the account "mitch" to "don". All this does is creates a new user "don" and moves the "my documents" (I have downloaded numerous pdf files that I've created instructing him on how to update antivirus, antispyware and general info on computer use, security, etc. and placed it in the My Documents folder) from "mitch" to don".

what i want to accomplish is to set an user account type automatically after creating one. as you may know, when you create an user account the system ask you what account type to apply for that new user. the default choice are: Administrator and Limited. i want to create an account that is not too limited but neighter with same privilege as an administrator. i went to the Local Users and Groups at the Microsoft Management Console (now on MMC) and assigned a different Group to each users i desired. task accomplished. but...
the problem is that i don't know how many user the computer will have. the owner of the computer are primitive human that don't know how to configure the system. i neighter want any of them to have administrative right because they have internet access and they still on the experiment process. meaning that they're propense to click 'YES' to any message even if those are viruses (most of them don't read english). the solution i thought was to assign only one user the administrative right so they can install and uninstall software and perform other administrative task as creating more user accounts. there is anyway that after creating an user account the system automatically assign the user a specific Groups? for example the built-in object Power User. or among the choice on user account tool add an new item or modify the existing items. or if there is anyway to modify the privilege and right for an built-in object Group. the Limited account pertain to the User Group, so instead of automatically assign other group, the new account inherit the privilage/right/limitation from the default group.
Does anyone know the extension that windows uses when it saves a backup of user data when a user account is deleted in XP?

For example, my user account name is JandJ, and my computer's name is LOVEMACHINE.

No "Administrator" account.I bought this as a "beater" PC to keep in the rec room, storage for pics, tunes and games etc It was a used PC from a Dell repair shop, in "original working order", and I'm starting to wonder if the guy that worked there didn't use it for target practice with his programming gun.Anyhow, our 15-year-old-going-on-40 thought she would start chatting with classmates after we went to bed, and a-HA! Busted. So I, in all my *finite* wisdom, thought I would get the best of the situation and delete all user accounts, and put in a fresh Admin password. I Was Wrong.I triumphantly deleted the account labeled "Owner", thinking the pc would default to "Administrator" login screen, if not bypassing the Welcome Screen altogether.So, I rebooted and, much to my chagrin, the Welcome Screen showed up alright, but with NO USERS to click on. Nothing. No "Guest", no "User", No "Owner", and no "Administrator"- the entire right side of the Welcome Screen is a BLANK "list".

I had forgotten I had my external hard drive still plugged in and I accidently deleted the partition for it and created a new one. I didn't FORMAT it, but then when I started up my computer, all the files were gone. So does that mean my files are premanently deleted or can I save the files somehow?.

What i mean is, it is like a new user acct - no settings, desktop picture gone, no recent docs, try and run a program and it thinks it is the first time it has run, eg winzip.i have checked the docs and settings folder - it's still my user name, and no new one appears.worse still, when i try and change some of these new default settings, eg IE home page back to google, it ignores my instruction - in fact no new settings at all will be recognised by IE. I also ran mu usual suite of spyware (spybot, adaware, spyware blaster) and although they found updates and dl'd them, they refuse to be recognised during the immunise process. Anyhow, nothing found.
