I have a Compaq Presario Media Center SR2034NX Desktop PC with XP installed from the factory. I needed to do a system recovery that should have put things back to the place they were when I purchased it.10-21-07. It restored things but not back to the original install.Can I do system restore without useing the programs system restore feature? If so, I could restore to an earlier date when things were ok.

My Pc has been come crippled with large amounts of spyware that make using the PC more and more diffcult each day. I was planning to complete a full system reformat, or system recovery as my manufacturer describes it. The PC was shipped with two drive C and D, both being a partition of one hard drive. I also added 3 further partitions to D, which means there are actually 5 drives. The computer manual says that when performing a system recovery, you can select to just recover the C partition, but it says that a recovery will provide an image of the PC's software when shipped, so does this mean it will restore the original partitions and lose my current partitions?

Since then I can't access my d:/, so I can't reinstall anything, including my internet and Microsoft Office software. If I look in the control panel I can see everything (I didn't lose any personal files), but D: always comes up as D:/RECOVERY, then fiendishly warns me not to look inside (which I haven't).

Everything works fine except when I boot up and following the Sony logo and Intel logo the following message appears "Press F11 for Acronis Startup Recovery Manager. Acronis fatal error Boot drive (partition) not found. Press Enter to try to boot your PC." Pressing enter boots up the PC fine but how can I eliminate the process? I had Acronis on both drives before the crash but it no longer exists.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a rar file (15 mb) and once I unpacked it on my desktop (it would show 0 mb when I tried the properties tab) it would not allow the contents of the folder to be seen nor to be delete it. The message I got was unable to delete the file and it is used by another program. I tried the following to delete the file to no avail however: 1. DOS commands 2. The Unlocker software 3. Tried to see what new files were created on that day (could not find anything suspicious) so I can delete them 4. Looked at the startup programs (could not find it there) 5. The restore at any earlier date feature of windows XP 7. Looked in the registry (could not find anything) 8. Tried to see what processes were running so I can terminated it but could not locate anything 9. Tried the Ultimate Troubleshooter software to locate any suspicious running processes 10. PC tools Spyware doctor with Antivirus and Threadfire, Eset antivirus (it could not scan the folder because it appears to be locked), Avir antivirus, Panta microscan and XoftspySE and I got no malware detection what-so-ever.

Is their anyway I can save the driver to disk and apply when restore is complete? Also I DO NOT have my original restore disk, but I have the option to just use the in-system restore option, or create disk. Should I create or does it not matter? Also how can I restore the system completely, the last time i did "Complete Restore" there were still unwanted files in the PC.

View 3 Replies View RelatedFirst off, my Default Margins are: Top 1" Bottom 1" Left 1:25" Right 1.25" from the "Page Setup" Menu But when I try to paste into a new doc [right click>New>Microsoft Word Document]the margins, and other settings, I'm sure, can be way off. I finally realized that when I open a new doc, these settings reflect the last saved document's settings, even tho the default settings are as above. This makes for a mess sometimes when trying to paste forms, etc that rely on default settings/spacings. Office XP is too complex for me, but I'm hoping someone knows where/if there is a setting to over-ride and ALWAYS open a new doc with ALL default settings, as if in a new install.

I was reading through this networking textbook about operating systems and I just found out that a computer can have more than one operating system. I have Windows XP installed through the Data Drivers Recovery CD and that's all I got related to my computer OS WINXP. If I wanted to install Windows XP to another computer that had Windows Vista, with that CD, is it possible, even though it says Data Drivers Recovery CD? Or do I need the actual Installation of WINDOWS XP (and other OS'S?).

There is supposed to be a recovery partition on this machine but it is screwed and I do not have the recovery CDs. Getting them from Lenovo seems to be out of the question as they said they would only send them to me if the computer was still under warranty.I am trying to reinstall XP Pro. I have a valid OEM product key on the side of the machine. I figured it was OEM because the key would not work with any ordinary XP Pro CD.Does anyone know of a way to reinstall XP Pro on this machine using the CD key on the side without the recovery CD?

Dell sent me a replacement but when it is inserted the "cannot continue since the version of XP on your system is newer than the one on the cd" message. I know a new cd can be made that will include the SP3 update with it. But to do this isn't the original cd with the product key required I still have the product key but am having trouble continuing.

Also I tried using System Restore and the restore process starts and gets about 1/3 of the way on the progress bar and restarts my PC and says “your system can not be restored”. I have went to Microsoft knowledge base of known problems w/SR and have tried all the different scenarios and get the same result each time. I have a feeling that I have been hijacked. I am including scans from MalewareBytes and Hijack This.

I bring the windows installation CD in Italy this summer to install also WinXP English version onto my PC I have there. Basicaly I do allways and often backup of everything. I have a backup of the install CD files since I bought my new PC(2006). But No way to find a notepad backup or any backup of the windows regkey who came with my windows Installation CD.

download from msn and in 2 days 8 viruis and many registery problems have got rid of all by running spydoctor . registy meachine ,avg .ntl netguard. the main viruis was backdoor jcb but now my windows firewall turns off after every restart and so dose system restore i have tryed to install a new firewall spygate but this will not start up after i download it i did put in a new cd-rw drive a couple of weeks ago but thats been fine

The router would start up fine, but after about 5 or 10 minutes, it would stop working and I would have no internet connection. I went and got a Dlink router, and thought I would do a system restore to before I attempted to put on the LinkSys router. The system restore has been running for more than an hour. The progress bar has gone about 80% and it seems nothing else is happening. I am fearful of turning off the machine in the middle of a restore.

So, if I backup (copy) all the files on my C drive, except the Windows folder (assuming that's where all the OS files are), to an external drive, then run the restore CD which will revert the computer back to the way it was when I bought it. Then download and install SP2 and copy the original files back to C.

I used the NOS feature of the software and applied the 110% setting. After that my computer locked up so I restarted it but now nothing boots up. I can enter the bios setup but thats all I can do.
View 10 Replies View RelatedFollowing advice from others, I have tried to remove or disable Microsoft's indexing feature from XP as it slows my system.I have marked my hard drives so that the indexing service is not allowed to access it within the properties for the drive.I have run "services.msc" and disabled the startup of the indexing service.Despite all of this, the service stills starts when I power up the computer, as indicated by the magnifying glass icon in the system tray. The start up status of the indexing service is still shown as disabled.

When I hit F10 upon startup in order to access the system recovery, nothing happens- it boots as it would regularly. I was able to boot up using the CD, and am now in the System Recovery console.
