Remove Or Disable Microsoft's Indexing Feature Slows System?
Jan 12, 2009
Following advice from others, I have tried to remove or disable Microsoft's indexing feature from XP as it slows my system.I have marked my hard drives so that the indexing service is not allowed to access it within the properties for the drive.I have run "services.msc" and disabled the startup of the indexing service.Despite all of this, the service stills starts when I power up the computer, as indicated by the magnifying glass icon in the system tray. The start up status of the indexing service is still shown as disabled.
If I disable indexing services will that not allow me to search for files on my comp? Say wma's or mp3's or other file types. What will be the result of disabling it?
i just got me a toshiba laptop and i was wondering how i can disable the double tap feature on the touchpad cuz i always seem to double tap it by accident.
I have installed XP as an upgrade from W2K to my wife's computer, and I recall that in the W2K installation the auto-logon feature was enabled. Now I am trying to disable this feature, so far without success. I have even used TweakUI and still the auto-login feature runs every time I reboot. I looked under the Group Policy editor, following my Administrator's Pocket Consultant for clues, and there is no effect.
I'm not sure why but there has been an annoying increase in the number of those Windows Security Information messages that pop up requiring me to select Yes before I can proceed with what I'm doing. To be specific, the message is named in the upper left hand corner "Security Information" and the messages states: "This page contains both secure and nonsecure items. Do you want to display the nonsecure items?" It then requires me to select "yes" in order to continue. I had to click it three times in one instance just to logoff the web site I was using. Is there anyway to disable this "feature" as I can never recall a time when I haven't selected "yes".
having a problem with the add remove programme feature on xp.For the past 18 months its been fine but clicked on the tab this morning and nothing won't display any list of installed programmes. Did a rollback to a week ago when it was ok, but still nothing
When I try to open Microsoft Office Word 2003 a window pops up that says window installer then it says installing microsoft office word feature. It stops half way and another window pops up that says Installation error file not found. A required installation file SKU112.CAB could not be found. Original installation source required. If you installed Microsoft Office Standard edition 2003 from cd please insert your cd.
If you installed Microsoft office standard edition 2003 over your computer network please browse to the installation source on your computer. Also a window popped up that says Microsoft word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install application. I don't have the cd its lost. This just started doing this about a month ago. I can't open any files through microsoft office word or power point.

A little over a week ago, my XP (HE) began to visibly slow down. For example, on startup the desktop icons would have the generic look and then slowly refresh one by one. And another example, when opening a program, it firsts displays partially and then the whole window comes up. First, I loaded Task Manager in an effort to see if any processes or applications were taking an unusual amount of resources. Nothing that gave me a hint there. Next I disabled indexing for searches, 'cause I thought maybe that was slowing things down (though I had indexing on prior to this and it never slowed things down like I'm seeing in my examples above). No joy there. Then I thought that maybe my prefetch files were gone and that was causing this, but that wasn't the case. I've scanned for spyware and viruses, but no joy there either (for once I was hoping some malware would show up). My swap file is fixed and defragmented, so that doesn't seem to be it either. MS came out with a bunch of updates on the 14th, so I thought maybe it was one of them, and have been removing one by one, but still no joy there. I've disabled all polling that some programs do for updates (like Adobe Reader and Java), thinking that perhaps that was interrupting the display . . . but no joy there either. I did update to Java Version 6 Update 10, which is listed as a Release Candidate but is still really a beta, right around the time those MS Updates came out and when my slow problem first started, so my next step will be to either go back to Update 7, or just uninstall Java completely (I really don't use it, and only have need of it when I do the Secunia online scan for security update info). Since beta's are essentially unfinished software, I'm thinking that maybe Update 10 could be doing it. I'm reluctant to bash MS Updates, but they have been known to screw things up. However, on all the searches I've done I don't see anything about those updates slowing things down, so I'm thinking that the MS Updates are probably not the cause.
Everytime I try to switch between a user in XP pro without logging off my computer slows to a crawl. I would have to hit the reset button and restart. It runs pretty quick otherwise. It has a 120 gb harddrive, 256 mb of ram and a atlon processor 3100+. Has anybody experience this before. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Recently when I try to open or save a file from any application then it takes about 5 minutes before the pop up window appears where I can select which file/directory etc. This has just started and is very annoying. It's a laptop and there are quite a few hortcuts in My Network Neighbourhood pointing to network drives when I'm in work.ever this hasn't given me a problem before and none of them are mapped.I did use a web based storage site and it downloaded an application to synchronise a folder with the web older.......there was a mapped drive I think but I uninstalled the application and that also deleted the mapped drive. Is the computer still trying to find the mapped drive (although it doesn't show up in Explorer?).
Is there a Group Policy in Windows that will disable the Windows games in Windows XP & 2kpro. I don't want to uninstall them. The company that I work for is putting their foot down internet use and game play.
When I go play a video file the media player will open and try to play the video file then my whole system slows down to a snails pace. The whole system will start stalling. It’s quite hard to describe the problem but here are the symptoms;
- Just as the video starts to play the system will appear to freeze.
Windows XP keeps a record of all files on the hard disk so when you do a search on the hard drive it is faster. There is a downside to this and because the computer has to index all files, it will slow down normal file commands like open, close, etc. If you do not do a whole lot of searches on your hard drive then I suggest turnning this feature off:1. Control Panel 2. Administrative Tools 3. Services 4. Disable Indexing Services
The "Add/Remove Windows Components" feature in "Add/Remove Programs" does not work on my machine. Once I click it, I get error message: "Setup was unable to open informatioin file msslight.inf" "The application cannot be initialized". googled the problem, found varous advices online but nothing works.
I have XP Professional OS and I have not been able to use the system restore feature to return to a specific restore point. Everytime I try to use it the message "restore incomplete system cannot be restored." shows up after it restarts. No matter what restore date I try it willl not work. What would be causing this and can it be fixed so it will work?
I was playing around with a software called AiBooster. It came with my motherboard (Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe). I used the NOS feature of the software and applied the 110% setting. After that my computer locked up so I restarted it but now nothing boots up. I can enter the bios setup but thats all I can do.
I have a Compaq Presario Media Center SR2034NX Desktop PC with XP installed from the factory. I needed to do a system recovery that should have put things back to the place they were when I purchased it.10-21-07. It restored things but not back to the original install. Can I do system restore without useing the programs system restore feature? If so, I could restore to an earlier date when things were ok.
When I select Help & Support from the Start menu I get a dialog that says:"Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named "Help and Support"When I run MSCONFIG and look for help and support it's not there.a bunch of Microsoft services are turned off in MSCONFIG. Would be good to know what should be on.

Anyone know how to permanently disable/remove the explorer bar pane in windows XP explorer. I have been searching for 2 hours and can not find a answer. If i press the x it goes but next time i open a window it is back.
A program wouldn't uninstall properly for some reason. So, after several tries, I finally decided to just delete the directory. How do I remove that program's information from system registry and Control Panel add/remove list?
I have become quite irritated by the various strange noises which happen at a "system event". I have found the dialogue box where additional events can be added to the sounds but I cannot see how to turn off the ones already there. I do not want to use "mute all" on the volume control as I frequently listen to music. Any suggestions welcome. While in that area of the screen, I want to remove some of the icons. The dialogue box is set to "always hide" the offending Icons but they are still showing.

I wrote this Guide on disabling System File Checker in Windows XP Professional. Sorry it's not in text form. You guys want it simple so anyone could do it, what could be simpler than looking at pictures (besides a program that will do it for you, which I've thought about...).http://www.overclockersclub.com/disablesystemfilechecker.shtmlContact: ProfessorXP@Yahoo.Com
