May 2, 2005
When I select Help & Support from the Start menu I get a dialog that says:"Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system service is not running. To fix this problem, start the service named "Help and Support"When I run MSCONFIG and look for help and support it's not there.a bunch of Microsoft services are turned off in MSCONFIG. Would be good to know what should be on.

I have two problems that I think are connected. Every time I turn on my computer and log into my account on Windows I get between one and three error messages that say, "Norton does not support the repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall." I thought at first this was stopping some needed application, but the more it happened and from reading Norton's alert logs, I think it is malware trying to repair itself and Norton is stopping it. The alert logs say something about a Trojan Horse everytime I turn my computer on. In addition, if I go online as soon as I log onto Windows then it says that a "recent attempt to attack my computer was blocked." - I think this is related to the error message and Trojan horse
I used to use the windows + D combination to show my desktop but it has stopped working. When I right-click on the taskbar, the option has disappeared as well. Everything that I have looked up on the web, deals with putting the 'Show the desktop' back on Quick Launch toolbar.I can do that - but the Show the Desktop shortcut & Windows + D no longer work.
I have XP Professional OS and I have not been able to use the system restore feature to return to a specific restore point. Everytime I try to use it the message "restore incomplete system cannot be restored." shows up after it restarts. No matter what restore date I try it willl not work. What would be causing this and can it be fixed so it will work?
I was playing around with a software called AiBooster. It came with my motherboard (Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe). I used the NOS feature of the software and applied the 110% setting. After that my computer locked up so I restarted it but now nothing boots up. I can enter the bios setup but thats all I can do.
My Latitude C610 with XP service Pack 2 is connected with external monitor and only shows wall paper on external monitor and not shows icons or any open application.
I have a Compaq Presario Media Center SR2034NX Desktop PC with XP installed from the factory. I needed to do a system recovery that should have put things back to the place they were when I purchased it.10-21-07. It restored things but not back to the original install. Can I do system restore without useing the programs system restore feature? If so, I could restore to an earlier date when things were ok.
Following advice from others, I have tried to remove or disable Microsoft's indexing feature from XP as it slows my system.I have marked my hard drives so that the indexing service is not allowed to access it within the properties for the drive.I have run "services.msc" and disabled the startup of the indexing service.Despite all of this, the service stills starts when I power up the computer, as indicated by the magnifying glass icon in the system tray. The start up status of the indexing service is still shown as disabled.
I run WinXP Pro SP2, and when I initiate the following sequence: Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information the Help and Support Center Window comes up. This also happens with Start -> Run -> msinfo32
I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that, but the visual styles can't load I assume, becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.
The situation: A reasonably new PC, clean and working properly. Several new programs are installed, including Firefox, Winamp, desktop publishing, photo manager, and security software (not the antivirus, standalone scanners.) Everything appears to be fine.I log on to Windows Live OneCare to use their "Safety Scanner" to, as they say, check for PC health issues and optimize performance. Mind you, the site recommends users log on once a month for the full service scan. As you know, the scan includes the removal of what it refers to as invalid registry entries. "Oh boy," right? The registry. Except you'd like to believe the official Microsoft site won't screw up your programs.
I tried to do a System Recovery today on my Sony laptop. Got 41% completed and had a fatal error. Options given were Ignore, Retry or Abort. Attempted a Retry. Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.
Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.

When I try to go to the system information page it goes to the Help and Support page instead. I've tried the Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools way and also tried Start/Run/msinfo32.exe and again through the HelpandSupport page and the same thing happens. Have searched the net and found other people who have the same problem and tried some suggestions but nothing has worked so far. I know I can do a re-install but don't want that route if there's no other way.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 which I bought in 2003. I recently purchased some memory for it. I bought 1gb as which is the most my PC can use. It wouldn't work. I put my two smaller modules back in and they worked fine. The seller, quoted me the following proposition:It is a common problem that your DELL cannot support High Density memory and you need Low Density memory. I have mentioned it in my listing page. I can exchange for you Low density for additional $18.00 per stick .
I am missing "System Information". I cannot get it from System Tools/System Information nor can I get it by going to Runmsinfo32. It just takes me to Help & Support.
I read somewhere?{and forgot to note where} that system restore "does not restore everything"! Correct? What doesn't it restore? Isn't it primarily personal stuff that you should backup anyway? Can anyone provide a list of what it doesn't restore or provide a link to? that gives this info?Is it in the help/tutorial/tour of xp and other OSs that have it?Remember! =There's no such thing as a stupid question but they're the easiest to answer!" TSG says so! So there!

I desperately need my laptop to work and I've run into this grave problem. When I came home today, my laptop wouldn't start properly and it would say "No Operating System Found" on a black screen after seemingly trying to load for a while. The laptop had a weird whirring sound that wasn't present before. I have a Sony VAIO PCG-K23.
My home PC uses Windows 2000 as it's OS. At work I'm on XP, which I really like. I'm wondering if I should change my home PC to Vista. Does that make any sense? If I do, how much trouble will it be to make the change?
How difficult is the process of uninstalling XP on my old PC and reinstalling that same copy on my new one? I want to wait until the first service pack of Vista is out before upgrading. I've heard reinstalling XP on a new PC can cause problems but I don't see how it would if it's no longer on my old PC.
