I desperately need my laptop to work and I've run into this grave problem. When I came home today, my laptop wouldn't start properly and it would say "No Operating System Found" on a black screen after seemingly trying to load for a while. The laptop had a weird whirring sound that wasn't present before. I have a Sony VAIO PCG-K23.
View 13 RepliesShould I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've got this old mobo Abit VT7. I want to install XP on it. However, the XP disc doesn't recognize SATA hard drives. So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi am having a problem with windows xp not reading my full system memory it is in the bios but windows just one day decided to stop reading a full one gig instead it decided to read 256 megs of ram i've replaced the memory sticks five times now and i know i havent baught that many bad sticks of memory is there any way i can get windows to read the memory since i know the memory has to be good since the bios is reading the full memory i've even the a f-disc and reformat thinking that would fix it
View 6 Replies View RelatedI shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that,but the visual styles can't load I assume,becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.

Several new programs are installed, including Firefox, Winamp, desktop publishing, photo manager, and security software (not the antivirus, standalone scanners.) Everything appears to be fine.I log on to Windows Live OneCare to use their "Safety Scanner" to, as they say, check for PC health issues and optimize performance. Mind you, the site recommends users log on once a month for the full service scan. As you know, the scan includes the removal of what it refers to as invalid registry entries. "Oh boy," right? The registry. Except you'd like to believe the official Microsoft site won't screw up your programs.

Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.

My computer was running smoothly that time with 2 hard disk's.I formatted my PC and installed windows xp.While installing windows xp i didn't connect my 80Gb hard disk.But after installation, when i tried to connect it , my computer started hanging.160Gb is my primary hdd and 80gb is secondary hard disk.I never had any OS on 80Gb. My computer hangs at windows xp boot screen.I tried at my friend's place also... tried all jumper settings also but no use. What could be the problem?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi just reformatted my hdd with my system restore dvd (symantic ghost)i have used this disk multipule times (major hardware problems) this time after ghost repartitions and reformats the Hdd it installs windoze xp home OEM (eww..machine) windows installs fine and then it asks me to remove my disk and press any key to reboot After it reboots windows goes through its setup (not install) it is the pretty blue screens first it asks for language then time zone then the EULA the it asks for me to name the computer
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have read through the forums and didnt find anything related to my problem, i have bought a new PC and used my old harddisk with the same operating system, luckly i was able to access the harddisk and everything was working fine, i prefered to format and install a fresh XP, after installing all the drivers, everything was working fine, however sometimes the PC hangs and you can not click or move the nouse or do anything, no error message is poping and i have to restart the PC manually.

I found an article at this site but did not write the file it told me to look for in msconfig. I looked for it there originally, after reading the article but could not find it in msconfig? What files have to be "turned on" in msconfig to have "System Restore" work? All settings that I have looked at (hard drive etc.) say that system restore is "on" and working but it will not let me create a restore point, and does not recognize any past "restore points" because they have not been created? Is there a "fix"? Let me know. If there is supposed to be a file in msconfig on the start tab, what is it and how do I get it there.

She is anxious to retain her photos. As she can't put any software on the system to check for viruses etc, the only thing I can suggest she does is to re-install XP. If she does not reformat the disk will her user data still be accessible?

Nowhere else can you tell that the device is found. This all worked a few months ago. Not sure what happened. I've tried multiple devices, cables and different USB ports, all the same. Does not show drive or camera on My Computer. Device manager says all is working fine. Drivers seem ok.

I'm connecting a 30GB Travelstar Hard Drive via an external USB 2.0 case to my Thinkpad T40 with Windows XP (pro). Windows immediately recognized it. However, the hard drive does not show up under Windows Explorer. I can go into Device Manager, click on Disk Drives, and it does show the new drive there (along with my main hard drive, which is a 80 GB hard drive).
I cannot figure out how to make it show up in Windows Explorer with an Drive Letter assigned to it and thus, how to actually use it.
I have a IBM T40 laptop running WinXP SP2. I have been using this machine for many years, including it's 2 USB ports. Some time ago, I experienced that I had to reconnect my external USB Lacie drive many times before my computer would recognize it. I would get the message that "Windows doesn't recognize the device", but reconnecting it again and again would eventually get it to work.But now things got worse. I can no longer use the USB port on my cable modem (Motorola) because it is never recognized, and the external drive is also never recognized.

Toshiba Laptop M70 WinXP home SP2.Initial issue Unabel to read files off the DVD/CD Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-8415 When checking "System" Hardware there is a yellow caution ! beside it indicating an issue.Action: Uninstalled device and rebooted to let windows find appropriate driver.
System said found new device and identified it by name. But still the trouble indicator.Tried a couple of things to no avail.I have the toshiba - product recovery disk but I cannot access it due to the DVD error. so I attached my external DVD (usb) device Thinking I could load the disk in it and recover the drivers or what ever. My Freecom DVD now has a Trouble indicator on it as well. so it appears that the devices won't recognize.(tried to instal again - system recognizes it initially then show the trouble indicator again.

I have talked to HP tech twice and 1 told me I need to buy a special automated recovery cd from them. The other said not to do that and I need to use the two cds I have (1. operating system cd, 2. Applications and Drivers dvd). Operating system is Windows XP professional on a HP laptop.I have completed the following steps. Can any one tell me if I am doing the right thing?
1)I put in the operating system cd and shut down the computer.
2) I started it back up useing the cd (by hitting any button when it asks).
3) I press Enter on the next menu to "set up windows xp now"
4) I press F8 to agree to license agreement
5) I press ESC "to continue installing afresh copy of windows xp without repairing". Below it has the following highlighted "C:windows "microsoft windows xp professional"
NT4 workstation running on the C Drive. How would I go about loading W98 onto the D Drive to run, when occasionally needed, as a separate OS? Or can anyone point me to a webpage that would take me through the process? Would loading W98 wipe the D Drive?
