Running Windows XP, SP2. If I plug in my camera or mini-USB drive, the speaker makes that ding-dong sound, but that is it. Nowhere else can you tell that the device is found. This all worked a few months ago. Not sure what happened. I've tried multiple devices, cables and different USB ports, all the same. Does not show drive or camera on My Computer. Device manager says all is working fine. Drivers seem ok.
I have an old Compaq Presario 5360 with Sis 7001 PCI to USB controller. This machine was working GOOD, I could work with my USB web cam, USB drive, USB digicam and others MP3 players.I have reinstalled my WinXP with Service Pack 2.0 and now I CAN'T use any USB device, when I connect my USB drive this device is not powered, XP doesn't notify me for anything. simply this PC looks not to have any USB controller.I have an DELL Notebook, I can use my USB devices on it.I just reinstalled the OS in the same way how I did it before. I think is something about drivers, the control panel (System devices) tells me everything is good and my USB controllers are working correctly.
I have lost my sound. The sounds icon in control panel say " no audio devices" AND the sound tab shows all listed devices as working porperly. I have deleted an sound object that allows it in device manager and allowed XP to load wht it will. I still have no sound. I checked for sound services in services and they are started as well.If I load Knoppix and test, my sounds work so I am assumming it is not a hardware problem.
The message I got when trying to boot up today. I had been away for a week and suspect that the teens were "messing" on my pc. I pressed Ctrl, Alt, Del and am at Compaq Computer Corporation Setup Utility - Main, Storage, Security, Advanced etc but don't know where to go from here.
Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.
I need help to get into the System Administrator in winXP home edition. What I really need to do is reset my security settings on the User Account. Please if you ould...give me step-by-step directions on how I can view & reset my System Administrator to use devices my computer restricts me to use.

I desperately need my laptop to work and I've run into this grave problem. When I came home today, my laptop wouldn't start properly and it would say "No Operating System Found" on a black screen after seemingly trying to load for a while. The laptop had a weird whirring sound that wasn't present before. I have a Sony VAIO PCG-K23.
The XP Home System Restore has not and will not work since I installed the XP Home OEM ~2 years ago. I found an article at this site but did not write the file it told me to look for in msconfig. I looked for it there originally, after reading the article but could not find it in msconfig? What files have to be "turned on" in msconfig to have "System Restore" work? All settings that I have looked at (hard drive etc.) say that system restore is "on" and working but it will not let me create a restore point, and does not recognize any past "restore points" because they have not been created? Is there a "fix"? Let me know. If there is supposed to be a file in msconfig on the start tab, what is it and how do I get it there.
Trying to help a friend whose XP system is running very slowly, it does not recognize any usb ports and will not connect to the internet. She is anxious to retain her photos. As she can't put any software on the system to check for viruses etc, the only thing I can suggest she does is to re-install XP. If she does not reformat the disk will her user data still be accessible?
computer failed to reboot. I used a boot disk to get started. I then noticed that the system does not recognize the drives C (where my Windows XP OS is installed) or D drive which is a seperate physical drive for my data.
I'm connecting a 30GB Travelstar Hard Drive via an external USB 2.0 case to my Thinkpad T40 with Windows XP (pro). Windows immediately recognized it. However, the hard drive does not show up under Windows Explorer. I can go into Device Manager, click on Disk Drives, and it does show the new drive there (along with my main hard drive, which is a 80 GB hard drive).
I cannot figure out how to make it show up in Windows Explorer with an Drive Letter assigned to it and thus, how to actually use it.
I have a IBM T40 laptop running WinXP SP2. I have been using this machine for many years, including it's 2 USB ports. Some time ago, I experienced that I had to reconnect my external USB Lacie drive many times before my computer would recognize it. I would get the message that "Windows doesn't recognize the device", but reconnecting it again and again would eventually get it to work. But now things got worse. I can no longer use the USB port on my cable modem (Motorola) because it is never recognized, and the external drive is also never recognized.
Not sure what has happened here. Toshiba Laptop M70 WinXP home SP2.Initial issue Unabel to read files off the DVD/CD Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-8415 When checking "System" Hardware there is a yellow caution ! beside it indicating an issue.Action: Uninstalled device and rebooted to let windows find appropriate driver. System said found new device and identified it by name. But still the trouble indicator.Tried a couple of things to no avail.I have the toshiba - product recovery disk but I cannot access it due to the DVD error. so I attached my external DVD (usb) device Thinking I could load the disk in it and recover the drivers or what ever. My Freecom DVD now has a Trouble indicator on it as well. so it appears that the devices won't recognize.(tried to instal again - system recognizes it initially then show the trouble indicator again.
I just installed Gangsters, a game I bought today, and when I tryied to play it right after installing it,it gave me this message:"Sorry Unable to initialize CD Player. Please make sure that no other application is accessing the CD."What does this mean?
I installed windows service pack 1 for windows xp and now my cd and dvd drives aren't recognized and I lost sound in my speakers. I got a code 39 error. The fix in windows support is useless
At first I thought it was BIOS not autodetecting my HDrive capacity. But in the setup screen it indicates the correct size. However, in WindowsXP-My Computer, it still says my harddrive is 20GB rather than 40GB.
my hard drive was going bad so i bought a new one. With my old hard drive still connected to my computer, i installed my new hard drive, and formatted windows xp on it. Everything was running well, until i removed my old hard drive from my computer and whenever i boot up my computer with my new hard drive, i get an error saying "No device found, please insert a boot disk and press any key". the only way i could boot into windows xp of my new hard drive is by a boot disk i created from another computer. Is there any way that i can boot into XP without always having to use a boot disk?
I have two almost identical (one of them has only 40Gb drive) Dell 8400 computers that worked very well together networked till yesterday. Both of them have same OS version including updates.I had to do a PC restore on computer A and since then Computer B doesn't recognize computer A. I went through Network Wizard, made sure the computer names are unique and the workgroup name is identical on both machines. Computer B doesn't even show local shared directories anymore.Computer A finds computer B without any problems.BTW, Computer B works fine otherwise; I can access Internet, a network drive without any problems. I did hardware ping test and board test and they all pass.
I just purchased a 2.5 hard drive enclosure for my Fujitsu drive that I removed from my broken laptop.I assembled the enclosure, connected it to the USB port on my pc, lights come on on the enclosure, I hear it spinning BUT my PC won't recognize it.Why? FYI, the Fujitsu drive from my laptop has Vista OS on it and my PC is an XP OS.
I've got this old mobo Abit VT7. I want to install XP on it. However, the XP disc doesn't recognize SATA hard drives. So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.
i am getting a Boot Failure message on my computer when I start it up. It seems like it is trying to boot from the various devices, Then I receive the Boot Failure message.

Working on a Dell Latitude D530 with Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pak 3; Experienced Serious Error and system had to shutdown. On restart; No Bottable Devices, Strike F1. On restart; Laptop very noisey. Probably coming from hard drive.Don't use this computer that often but contains critical information.Has not been physically abused, dropped or liquid spilled on or in it.It just crashed.
My WMP (v11) has strated toc crash whenever I plug a memory stick or my MP3 player.I have loaded a Hotfix that's supposed to address this problem but it's still there.
In the past few weeks my firewire port at the front of my PC is not recognising devices; external drives & camcorder.I've an Audigy 2 ZS with firewire port also, and it's not recognising devices also. Although I've never tried the Audigy before. Is there a possibility it's a software issue? (since both firewire's are inoperative) My USB 2 slots are all working fine.I might buy a PCI firewire card tomorrow and try that, But I appreciate if anyone has any ideas...
All USB ports wont recognise any devices although tried my MP3 player and power is getting to it. Checked Bios everything that matters seems to be enbled. Did clean re-install from restore disk XP1, upgraded to XP SP2 still same problem. (This needed doing anyway and USB problem existed before re-install) Device manager showing no problems.

I have Windows XP Media Center installed on my computer. How do I shut off all the sound devices on my computer so that when I get an error screen or start up my computer or whatever, I don't get any sound at all?
On a users laptop (IBM Thinkpad) the playback button under Sounds and Audio Devices - sounds - program events is greyed out. They are able to hear sounds. I can play a sound file in Media Player, but no sound otherwise. Also, in Shockwave (I know, not a Microsoft product, but I am just listing this as a troubleshooting issue), they don't hear any sound when playing a.swf file.
