Trying to help a friend whose XP system is running very slowly, it does not recognize any usb ports and will not connect to the internet. She is anxious to retain her photos. As she can't put any software on the system to check for viruses etc, the only thing I can suggest she does is to re-install XP. If she does not reformat the disk will her user data still be accessible?
View 7 RepliesI recently ought an E-machines computer running XP MCE w/SP2. It has an AMD 3400 processor and 200GB HD and 1MB RAM. I had transitioned all of my files and applications from a Windows 98 machine using Aloha Bob's PC Relocater. Everything seemed to work fine, however, my USB ports will not recognize anything except my printer (no external flash drives or my digital camera - software is loaded onto the computer). I had contacted E-machines tech services and they asked me the usual stuff, like disabling the ports and restarting the machine, check the BIOS to ensure they are enabled, etc. Now they are suggesting I run a ''Non-Destructive'' System Retore. Naturally I will back up my files and apps on DVD, but my concern is will I be able to reload the apps to which I do not have disks for? Is there something elese I should do prior to running the System Restore (in SAFE mode??). Also do you think this will work and restore my USB ports?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI was having a lot of troubles with XP PRO after a CPU failure, when I tried to do an XP installation Repair. It failed miserably and after a month of posting and searching for answers, I threw in the towel. I reformatted the HD and did a clean install. On the advice of a MS Tech, I downloaded SP3 and installed it first thing. After I got everything up and running with all the updates, I discovered that XP no longer recognizes my USB ports as USB2. I found some original drivers on the Motherboard installation disk, but it will not allow me to install them because my XP SP2 install disk is already supposed to have them. I tried removing all the USB drivers and forcing XP to figure it out, but no luck. It is an ASUS P5GD2 Deluxe with a P4 processer and an XP PRO SP3 Operating System.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a USB MICR Reader (It is used for reading checks and credit cards) and i use the accessibilitiy option in control panel to enable serial key devices since the program has to go thru a virtual keyboard in order for the MICR Reader to communicate with the program and in the accessibility options you can only use com 1-4 since MS doesn't reconize anything above 4 for use as a serial device. Nedless to say i need to know how to change com ports in XP the device will take up to com port 18 but the serial devices above 4

the KRC Anti-Spyware tutorial, I have ewido, spybot (tea timer running), Ad-Aware, etc. and cleaned everythign up, and my system is finally stable again. I even got Norton System works and that helped a lot too. I've been to Windows update and am completely up to date with installs.2 problems still: I still have no audio, and 5 of my USB ports are not working
the front two USB ports on my desktop are not working right. When I plug something into them, the system freezes and I have to turn the power off. This not happen to the two USB ports on the rear of the desktop.

I did a system restore to my computer and all of my usb ports are not responding to anything, at first I thought it was the stuff I already used i.e. mouse and keyboard, but nothing works within the usbs. Tht meant that i couldn't log back on after my system restore because I couldn't type my password in. Then, for some stupid reason I went to change the voltage setting which is random and stupid, and now the computer won't even turn on. Please help as I don't want to have to fork out for a new computer.

How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? I found an article at this site but did not write the file it told me to look for in msconfig. I looked for it there originally, after reading the article but could not find it in msconfig? What files have to be "turned on" in msconfig to have "System Restore" work? All settings that I have looked at (hard drive etc.) say that system restore is "on" and working but it will not let me create a restore point, and does not recognize any past "restore points" because they have not been created? Is there a "fix"? Let me know. If there is supposed to be a file in msconfig on the start tab, what is it and how do I get it there.

Nowhere else can you tell that the device is found. This all worked a few months ago. Not sure what happened. I've tried multiple devices, cables and different USB ports, all the same. Does not show drive or camera on My Computer. Device manager says all is working fine. Drivers seem ok.

I'm connecting a 30GB Travelstar Hard Drive via an external USB 2.0 case to my Thinkpad T40 with Windows XP (pro). Windows immediately recognized it. However, the hard drive does not show up under Windows Explorer. I can go into Device Manager, click on Disk Drives, and it does show the new drive there (along with my main hard drive, which is a 80 GB hard drive).
I cannot figure out how to make it show up in Windows Explorer with an Drive Letter assigned to it and thus, how to actually use it.
I have a IBM T40 laptop running WinXP SP2. I have been using this machine for many years, including it's 2 USB ports. Some time ago, I experienced that I had to reconnect my external USB Lacie drive many times before my computer would recognize it. I would get the message that "Windows doesn't recognize the device", but reconnecting it again and again would eventually get it to work.But now things got worse. I can no longer use the USB port on my cable modem (Motorola) because it is never recognized, and the external drive is also never recognized.

System said found new device and identified it by name. But still the trouble indicator.Tried a couple of things to no avail.I have the toshiba - product recovery disk but I cannot access it due to the DVD error. so I attached my external DVD (usb) device Thinking I could load the disk in it and recover the drivers or what ever. My Freecom DVD now has a Trouble indicator on it as well. so it appears that the devices won't recognize.(tried to instal again - system recognizes it initially then show the trouble indicator again.

View 3 Replies View Relatedmy hard drive was going bad so i bought a new one. With my old hard drive still connected to my computer, i installed my new hard drive, and formatted windows xp on it. Everything was running well, until i removed my old hard drive from my computer and whenever i boot up my computer with my new hard drive, i get an error saying "No device found, please insert a boot disk and press any key". the only way i could boot into windows xp of my new hard drive is by a boot disk i created from another computer. Is there any way that i can boot into XP without always having to use a boot disk?

Both of them have same OS version including updates.I had to do a PC restore on computer A and since then Computer B doesn't recognize computer A. I went through Network Wizard, made sure the computer names are unique and the workgroup name is identical on both machines. Computer B doesn't even show local shared directories anymore.Computer A finds computer B without any problems.BTW, Computer B works fine otherwise; I can access Internet, a network drive without any problems. I did hardware ping test and board test and they all pass.

So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.

I'd be playing and my mouse would just completely stop working, anywhere from 1-10 or so seconds. I tried using a different mouse, a mx500 and I still get the same problem. I've tried different usb ports, different mouses, and anything I could think of. These malfuntioning occurences happen quite often, maybe 2-3 times every five minutes, and my mouse completely turns off for whatever amount of time. My computer is about 3 years old, but I keep it running like the day I bought it. I plan on formatting really soon, within the next few days and that might solve the problem. Please let me know of any reason this problem is occuring, and what I can do to fix it

Power is getting through because i can charge my mp3 player and the P.C. speakers are powered vias USB. Device manager tells me the USB ports are working correctly.
