NT4 workstation running on the C Drive. How would I go about loading W98 onto the D Drive to run, when occasionally needed, as a separate OS? Or can anyone point me to a webpage that would take me through the process? Would loading W98 wipe the D Drive?

View 8 Replies View Relatedi was having sum problems with ubuntu when i installed it onto my second hard drive(d).on my (c)drive i have xp pro installed and on the (d) drive i had nothing until i installed linux ubuntu so i decided to remove it and i messed up because before i uninstalled it i formatted that hard drive(d),and thought that should be ok coz it must have removed it,and i'm sure it did,but now every time i turn on my pc it gives me a choice of choosing a operating system either XP or UBUNTU,how do i get rid of the ubuntu on the startup i just want it to go into xp and not give me a choice,i have looked into it and every body says i should use the fixmbr in command in recover with the xp cd running and i did that but it still doesn't remove it
I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.
Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that,but the visual styles can't load I assume,becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.

Several new programs are installed, including Firefox, Winamp, desktop publishing, photo manager, and security software (not the antivirus, standalone scanners.) Everything appears to be fine.I log on to Windows Live OneCare to use their "Safety Scanner" to, as they say, check for PC health issues and optimize performance. Mind you, the site recommends users log on once a month for the full service scan. As you know, the scan includes the removal of what it refers to as invalid registry entries. "Oh boy," right? The registry. Except you'd like to believe the official Microsoft site won't screw up your programs.

Got a fatal error message and everything locked up. I ended up shutting down and when I turned the computer on again it said no operating system found. Where did I screw up?
This is a six year old Sony, XP, AMD 1.0Ghz. Everything was working at the time I tried the System Recovery EXCEPT I was constantly getting low space messages for drive C. I have no files on this drive and very little software. It is a 20G hard drive partioned into two 10G partitions.
Should I ever use one of the utility programs to wipe my hard drive completely, how do I reinstall Windows XP since the CD driver has been erased? How can you reinstall an operating system that is on CD when you have no driver for the CD player? The reason I am asking these questions is that I might want to give my computer to friend and I want my stuff off of the hard drive and my friend to be able to use the computer.

My computer was running smoothly that time with 2 hard disk's.I formatted my PC and installed windows xp.While installing windows xp i didn't connect my 80Gb hard disk.But after installation, when i tried to connect it , my computer started hanging.160Gb is my primary hdd and 80gb is secondary hard disk.I never had any OS on 80Gb. I have talked to HP tech twice and 1 told me I need to buy a special automated recovery cd from them. The other said not to do that and I need to use the two cds I have (1. operating system cd, 2. Applications and Drivers dvd). Operating system is Windows XP professional on a HP laptop.I have completed the following steps. Can any one tell me if I am doing the right thing?
1)I put in the operating system cd and shut down the computer.
2) I started it back up useing the cd (by hitting any button when it asks).
3) I press Enter on the next menu to "set up windows xp now"
4) I press F8 to agree to license agreement
5) I press ESC "to continue installing afresh copy of windows xp without repairing". Below it has the following highlighted "C:windows "microsoft windows xp professional"
Would this system be fast and good enough to run on Windows XP?

I was happy using it with my Windows xp until one day its hard disk found some serious problems and I bought a very cheap, but new hard disk(160 GB, IDE). I came home happy and installed my new HDD and windows again, but when I tried to use my laptop it turns out that file operation(copy, cut, move, deletion) is really really slow. And when for example, I try to open my My computer my mouse freezes for few seconds until the window pops up.

I took the hard drive out of the working one and put it in the non working one as the master. (BTW on the non working one its just the hard drive that is working properly) I put the hard drive from the non working one as the slave so i can try and get some files off of it and format it. So I boot up the system and the computer recognizes it but then i get an " Error Loading Operating System" error.

However, the second choice is also Window XP HomeEdition and if I take it it tells me there is a disk hardware error and it cannot boot.

So, ideally, I should have two windows system installed. Maybe in fact, there are 2 systems installed. However, the problem is after I installed XP, it directly loaded into XP without letting me choose which system I wanted to load into when I restarted the pc. In other words, I can not log in my vista system now.
